Subject: Poser 13 very slow when accessing external runtimes

randym77 ( ) posted Fri, 28 April 2023 at 1:57 AM · edited Mon, 30 December 2024 at 8:52 PM

I have multiple runtimes, all on a dedicated external drive. I only have a few attached to Poser 13, but it's really struggling with them. It takes a really long time to load anything. I get frequent error messages about access being denied. I don't have this problem with other programs.

I do occasionally get that error message with Poser 11, but trying again fixes it, very quickly. Poser 13 takes so long to load anything I'm finding it unusable. I've gone back to Poser 11 for now.

I have the Poser 13 runtimes on one external drive and a massive runtime on an external SSD and they both seem to work as they did in Poser 12 so I can't say I am seeing the problem.

I use Poser 13 on Windows 11 - For Scene set up I use a Geekcom A5 -  Ryzen 9 5900HX, with 64 gig ram and 3 TB  storage, mini PC with final rendering done on normal sized desktop using an AMD Ryzen Threadipper 1950X CPU, Corsair Hydro H100i CPU cooler, 3XS EVGA GTX 1080i SC with 11g Ram, 4 X 16gig Corsair DDR4 Ram and a Corsair RM 100 PSU .   The desktop is in a remote location with rendering done via Queue Manager which gives me a clearer desktop and quieter computer room.

That is weird. I have the same type of massive external runtimes across two drives, no issues accessing them with P13. Maybe something with program permissions for Poser 13?

Access being denied is a permissions problem.  If a runtime has been placed into the Program Files folder either intentionally or by mistake, Poser will encounter slowdowns and erratic behavior.  The only files that should be placed there are from the Poser.exe and Python Scripts.

It does seem to be some kind of permissions problem. I get the same message with Poser 11 once in awhile, but I can just ignore it, and stuff loads fine.

There's no runtimes on the C drive. All my runtimes, including the default runtime, are on an external drive. Called Poser (P:)  It only has Poser content. Poser 11 (and 12) use the same runtimes.

The exact message is:

Poser Error
Failed to retrieve file times for [path to runtime] (error 5: access is denied)

How shallow or deep is your Library searches?

Access denied is an operating system error. Poser's just repeating what Windows said.

Search is set to deep. Maybe a different setting would help.

Might be just because I have so many drives attached. (Six, along with the two internal.)  There might be some interference issues. Still, I don't have any problems with other software. Poser is the only one that gives me that error message. And it's barely a blip with Poser 11. Just ignore the message, and it works fine.

Not sure about Poser 12. I haven't used it much.

It also can be caused due a Virus scanning, I had this issue when accessing files the antivirus first scanned these and only were aviable after the scan, this repetitive each time when accessing a folder. You might try to configure the virus scan not to scan the runtime you have linked with Poser. Also on my first runn with P13 it seemed making a catalog. My Runtime is about 5tb of files over 3'000'000 files in the library I thought that it never stops the scan ! so it also might be that your catalog is corrupted after the scan. But I have no idea where the catalog is saved to remove it .

Found the Catalog file, it is in the AppData-Roaming-Poser-13-ContentLibrary?? , Never had such a large Index like the one in P13 it reached over "2GB" that is huge !! in Poser 11 the same runtimes are under 300 meg

Interesting. I wonder what the reason for the difference is?

I don't think it's virus scanning that's the problem. My runtimes are shared by all versions of Poser, and only Poser 13 is choking.

Interesting, speaking of ContentLiabrary*.db, 492Gb of runtimes

- Poser11, access to all runtimes but two (Poser12 & Poser13's contents): 317Mb
- Poser12: access to all runtimes but Poser13's content: 243Mb
- Poser13: all runtimes: 127Mb

Did you try a full re-index?

@Y-Phil, I think that's just a total Library refresh button.

guess Bondware is collecting every single data info through the catalog "LOL" might be the cause that the file is getting that huge. My Poser 11 is running since years and still the catalog is small Poser 13 just a few times and it is huge ! Poser 12 is not installed so can't compare. Have Poser 12 but finally trashed it !

If they do scan catalogs then sure they will need new serves to store all this data LOL .....

For a full re-index you need to trash the old one ....

I doubt the number of drives is an issue, for the past few years I have been running with a total of 19 drives connected, 17 if you do not include the DVD writer and DVD/M disk reader/writer.   Seven of those drives are external 500gig SSDs with the C drive being the same but internal as it is plugged into the Motherboard.  The rest are 1TB conventional hard drives used for storage and seven of those are also external.  In addition I have two NAS units networked in.  With all that the only time my system gets slow is if windows it trying to generate image thumbnails when it appears to go walkabout for no appear reason.   Occasionally the a drive seems to drop off the system for no apparent reason but cycling the power on the missing drive rectifies the problem.
