Subject: Just Got Poser...Started Playing....Pulling Hair Out....Now Have Questions:-)

digitaljohnny ( ) posted Fri, 30 November 2001 at 10:13 AM · edited Sat, 30 November 2024 at 3:19 AM

Okay, I need some pointers on some things to get me running in the right direction. First, I hate the perfectly square workspace in Poser. Why does it force me to work in a limiting square like that? I guess that I am used to more of a rectangular layout as in Photoshop where I can minimize and juggle windows around. Second, why when I choose something simple like hair for a model does it not place itself accordingly on the model? It consistently places itself through the models head. Moving it around then makes it look really silly. The hair basically cuts through body parts and is rather difficualt to work with. Third, why is it when I select a shoe to say Vicki does she dissappear and only the shoe remain present? Fourth, say I want to create a large detailed Cyber Studio scene that is 1024X768. Do I have to keep creating objects in Poser and exporting them to Adobe Photoshop? The Poser workspace seems to be very limiting in terms of view. Thanks for all of the help. I am really getting into this and will be a contributing member soon!!!! Sorry if my questions or comments are wackey or dumb. Regards, John

  1. "I hate the perfectly square workspace in Poser" click on the dimensions display above the window -or- grab the window at the bottom right & make it whatever aspect you like. 2."hair ~ does ~ not place itself accordingly on the model" Most hair props are saved as "smart props" which should locate themsevelves properly on a default model when loaded. On figures other than default though, you will have to tweak the position to compensate for the differences. 3." why is it when I select a shoe to say Vicki does she dissappear" Use the double checkmark (add) at the bottom of the library display and not the single checkmark (replace). 4. See #1 Good luck!

ya know, sometimes the Back button just don't seem to work in here... so addendum: also, on the render size thing, in case you missed it, by using "Render to a New Window" in the render dialog box, or as an animation, the rendered frame can be any size but, is restricted to the current displays' aspect ratio.

First to save future trouble, make sure you have the Poser4.03 update installed from www.curiouslabs.com

You can make your workspace window any ratio you wish:

Menu>Window>Document Window Size..

If the hair doesn't appear on the Victoria model as it should, you're probably using the P4 Fem version.

Go to www.daz3d.com on the victoria purchase page and download the free conversion hair files for Victoria.

There are also some free realistic hair props a www.digitalbabes2.com

Go to your render setting and change it to render to a new window for larger sizes.

Hi John, welcome to the world of Poser. Its a case of been there done that, but since I still have some hair left maybe I can help.

You can change the size of the document window by either dragging the bottom right hand corner or by going to Window/Document/Window Size.

Hair today... gone tomorrow? Providing that you have the head selected and the hair was made for that head then it should fit first time. If you find that when loading up a hair model you appear to get a beard, or a chest wig, or a ..... no lets not go there... :) you will indeed have to make positioning adjustments.

Re shoes etc.... click on the double check mark (add too) rather than the single check mark (replace). Double clicking on the library icon will also replace rather than add too the scene.

Fourth... You can set the size of rendered images by going to Render/Render Options and selecting New Window.

So there you go, its all a learning process.... watch out there is a test at the end of the month :)

another thing about changing sizes. see that the constraits checkbox is not checked. if it is, than when you change hight, the weight will change automaticlly. there is another reason why Vicky could disapear. it's when the shoes geometries (if there is any) is not places in the right folder. then you will have an error messages, and vicky could disapear after that.

Wow! Everyone having a slow morning also? (When I saw all the replies from such "powerful and influential" members of the community.... I was concerned that I must have said something profoundly stupid in my intial reply :-0 ) Time for more coffee...

Thanks Everyone!!! I am having serious fun with Poser. I will goto Curious Labs and ask them about the update...I am surprised that my CD didn't come with it. I got a bunch of stuff from Reba over at DAZ3D as well...so I will be busy this weekend. So far I am hooked on this. Thanks for taking time with me....I really do appreciate it. John

The Victoria and Michael items are made by Daz3d, a separate company than Curious Labs. You might have a hairstyle made for Victoria but tried to put it on Posette - the default female figure that comes with Poser. (It's the official nickname of the figure. You'll see the reference a lot around here.) This is a common mistake. It's really easy to tweak hair to fit other models. You'll also find that some hair styles made for Posette or Victoria work well with Dork (the P4 male - he's got a self-esteem problem) or Michael with tweaking in scale and positioning. Don't forget to post some pictures once you get comfortable with the program!

Here's the link to the free P4 hair conversions for Victoria: Hair Conversions.

It the link doesn't work, go to www.daz3d.com and click on the store. Click Hair, then Victoria hair. It will be the second to the last item on the page.

#5. I've never seen a question posed here (pun intended) that was ever looked upon as "wackey or dumb." Ask away. Poser folks are the nicest, most helpful...especially to newbies.

Well, the "Can I download Poser 4 illegally?" question is not looked upon favorably, but "dumb" is not the word we use to describe that particular question. ;-)

Welcome, Digitaljonny; Poser is a bit frustrating when you begin, but once you get the hang of it it gets really fun. I've been a poseraddict for about 6 months now and I'm really starting to get great results - learning more about Poser AND photoshop all the time. You've come to the right place to ask questions; everyone here is very friendly and helpful. We even have folks that hang around the boards that work both for Curious Labs and DAZ so sometimes you get some very high level help! Plus all the A++ artists like PhilC who are always ready to lend a hand. Be sure and read the FAQs up at the top of the forum, they have some of the common questions and glitches new poser users run into, and a few of the minor bugs Poser has. Hang around this forum a lot; by reading some of the problems other folks have you can often be ahead of the learning curve. A couple quick tips about photoshop; first, seriously consider the great filters from EyeCandy for photoshop; they're a lot of fun and very useful. Second, know that sometimes images processed in Photoshop have problems being loaded up to the Renderosity galleries - something about the headers photoshop attaches. I downloaded IrfanView, a free image viewing software; my last step is to take the TIFF image I've been working with in photoshop, already sized to meet the gallery limits, and the thumbnail, and take them into irfanview and convert to jpg and save. Wipes out the photoshop headers and the images load great.
