Credits: Background by : Fairiegoodmother - At DeviantArt Model by:mjranum-stock - At DeviantArt Thanks everybody for all support to my last post. thumb_2243494.jpg Hi dear Friends: For some time now, there has been a growing controversy here at RR regarding ratings, comments, and related issues. Now, such discussions seem to have escalated to the point where even some of the artists that I admire enormously have begun to express the view that, for some reason or another, to comment or rate images, to create symbiosis and friendship with others by regularly exchanging posts on each other's works is something negative that we should be ashamed of. Indeed, it would appear that popularity is something bad or can only be obtained by one being bad (e.g., if an artist is popular it is because he/she is a mediocre artist who comments on many images in exchange for comments in return). Though I can understand the motivation underling such views, they are seriously warped. Renderosity is a space where the whole purpose if for people to view, comment, evaluate, and rate each other's work. It is about creating an online community of artists. The time spent seeing and commenting an image is a token of appreciation and incentive more than anything else. Of course, there are some cut-n-paste messages which are not the kind of thing one ideally would want, but even in this case one should not automatically consider that they are careless or just self-interested pseudo-praise, for they can be simply the consequence of lack of time or even lack of knowledge of the language. We can't assume that all such posts or their authors are morally bankrupt. The same goes for posting a comment on somebody's work as a reply to a comment given to your own work, that is to say, it is usually just common courtesy, not the purchasing of popularity. Values are being mixed up here. It is important to note that, if one thinks that popularity, position in the charts, being artist or vendor of the month, and so forth, are of no importance or value, why not simply ignore those things altogether? Why is there a need to go through the effort of broadcasting, discussing, or even campaigning against them? Good art is the synergistic result of hard work, popularity, creativity, intelligence, and, above all else, sensitivity and humbleness. It is a social and cultural process, as much as a technical and inspirational one. There actually are some shameful things going on at RR, but they are of another nature. They have to do with the deception of posting comments praising someone's work only to, behind their backs, give them a poor rating on the said work, doing so without ever offering any sort of constructive criticism. They also have to do with making malicious comments meant simply to put down an artist, or being so proud of oneself as to believe that if you are not on the top it is only because you have been unfairly short-changed by lesser artists who bargain for votes. These are the types of things that we should be wary of, not the legitimate bonds of friendship, politeness, respect, and admiration that make this virtual community so successful among digital artists. Putting people down simply because they post comments or are socially engaged is just as bad as picking on them for not posting at all or staying to themselves: one has no right to do either of those things. Thank you again for all your support and friendship, without which I would not have learn all that I have and continue too! Have a Great week Monica

MAERVELOUS IMAGE! GREAT MANIFESTO! I AGREE AND SUBSCRIBE. I'M FED UP WITH THESE STUFFY CONTROVERSIES THAT SPRING UP EVERY OTHER WEEK AS A BAD PENNY! I'M HAPPY FOR THOSE WHO ARE MENTIONED AS ARTIST OF THE MONTHS WEEK AND YEAR, FOR THEM AND ALSO BECAUSE THIS WAY I CAN MEET SOME ARTIST I HADN'T MET BEFORE FOR LACK OF TIME! AS I SAID BEFORE RR IS A FRIENDLY PLACE TO STAY, BUT SOME MEMBERS ARE LESS THAN FRIENDLY. I THOUGHT I HAD LEFT THIS BICKERING AT THE KINDERGARTEN OR AT WORST AT THE PRIMARY SCHOOL!

Wow! Very nice and a little different. The integration of all the elements is excellent. Like the trail of butterflies. Beautiful work. Your manifesto seems right on point. If one thinks the art charts should be ignored, then they should do that and not even comment about them. It's easy. On the other hand, if that's all one is into at any cost, then I feel sorry for them, they're missing the point. Frankly I don't really know what goes on here. I comment for likes, encouragement and courtesy and assume the return is done in kind for me. We can't like all or everything and I can't expect everyone to like everything I do. So, I'll continue on as I have. If someone has or is sabotaging me or my work, I'm unaware. If they are, what can I do? Probably nothing.

Your art is lovely Monica you did a great job here. What happened while I was away, this is so sad! So very sorry their is such unrest here it is too sad to think about, art is my saving, my Rendo friends are my saving. I am ill and in pain every day and for my rendo friends to leave comments, and a good rating for the art I put hours into is a real big boost to me filling me with inspiration, and I should miss that if it were to change. I literally disappear into my art and it in turns steers me away from the pain I suffer. I have not come across anything untoward in my gallery, so obviously the kind of people attracted to my gallery are the best, the kindest and the one's who respect others artwork, I consider myself very lucky to have such admirable friends here, that of course is you included dear friend. Take care Monica, hugs Jane xx

Thank you Monica for voicing the opinion of so many of us here!! While I think that the number of views, comments, & faves is wonderful for confidence (ego) of the artist, I feel that negative comments are un-necessary and should not be made. As the old adage says: If you can't say something nice, then say nothing at all. Tips to improve an image or something in the process of building an image are always welcomed and encouraged!! This image is amazing Monica!! Love how the background becomes the mid ground as well!! Great work!! and thanks for trying to pull us all back into line!!

First (and most importantly): This is a very beautiful image. I think the colors contrast wonderfully. (... as well as other reasons which I'm just not versed well enough to elaborate on.) As for the whole commenting/rating thing... I comment on images which catch my interest, and I (usually) try to mention what caught my eye, or in some cases, when I don't know how to express myself, I simply say 'Nice work'. I also like to encourage people who maybe aren't so skilled (like myself), but make the types of images that I enjoy. I really couldn't care less about ratings. I make my own images because a scene in my head made me chuckle, and so I thought it would be nice to share. (maybe someone else will enjoy it.) I don't consider myself to be an artist - I'm just a hobbyist who's having fun and learning. I appreciate it when people offer constructive advice (such as turning on shadows, etc.) because that only offers to make my images more appealing, to myself, and to others. It's also nice to hear when I've made someone smile. Recently, I've started commenting alot more, simply because the comments that I've received (whether I deserved them or not) have really encouraged and motivated me to continue trying. So why not spread the love? If that makes me a 'bad' person, then I guess I'll just have to burn... (Insert bronx-cheer/raspberry here.)

Boa noite Monica! Bela composição, imagem e combinação de cores... me lembra as clássicas gravuras japonesas. Desculpe as poucas e resumidas palavras, crítica não é o meu forte, prefiro apreciar a obra! Abr!

it has been the same since I joined in 2003 and I have learned to accept the small amount of negative with the many friendships this site has afforded to me.the positive to me far out weights the few people that wants to find or produce malice I agree mostly with what you are saying and I learned that the few wants their intended victim to either quit or orally respond in a negative manner so the moderators will have to give them warning, instead of the jerk

A super image with lovely graceful posing. I love how you have done the butterflies too. I agree with what you are saying, our art is done for enjoyment not to see who is the best. I would love to have the time to see everything that is posted but it is an impossibility, there are only so many hours in a day. This is a marvellous community really.

This is a beautiful render Monica and I liked the way the butterflies drew my eyes down to your character. As far as your narrative goes I agree 100% but I am just a lowly photographer. I look and click. You are an artist and I enjoy your work. There are only a few like you that I appreciate the effort put into their work. I only comment on what I like. If I don't like it I move on to another gallery. Beauty is in the eye of the beholder. I do not like negativity so I don't use it. Dana

Dear Monica, you've posted so many wonderful images since I left...I'm so sorry that I don't have the time to comment on all your images...don't be mad, please. Your work is, as always, at the top, your talent and your imagination are amazing and this latest post is a good example of what I'm saying ; it's a wonder. As to your manifesto, I totally agree but think that some people here are behaving like children, it's ridiculous.
