Credits: Background by : Fairiegoodmother - At DeviantArt Model by:mjranum-stock - At DeviantArt Thanks everybody for all support to my last post. thumb_2243494.jpg Hi dear Friends: For some time now, there has been a growing controversy here at RR regarding ratings, comments, and related issues. Now, such discussions seem to have escalated to the point where even some of the artists that I admire enormously have begun to express the view that, for some reason or another, to comment or rate images, to create symbiosis and friendship with others by regularly exchanging posts on each other's works is something negative that we should be ashamed of. Indeed, it would appear that popularity is something bad or can only be obtained by one being bad (e.g., if an artist is popular it is because he/she is a mediocre artist who comments on many images in exchange for comments in return). Though I can understand the motivation underling such views, they are seriously warped. Renderosity is a space where the whole purpose if for people to view, comment, evaluate, and rate each other's work. It is about creating an online community of artists. The time spent seeing and commenting an image is a token of appreciation and incentive more than anything else. Of course, there are some cut-n-paste messages which are not the kind of thing one ideally would want, but even in this case one should not automatically consider that they are careless or just self-interested pseudo-praise, for they can be simply the consequence of lack of time or even lack of knowledge of the language. We can't assume that all such posts or their authors are morally bankrupt. The same goes for posting a comment on somebody's work as a reply to a comment given to your own work, that is to say, it is usually just common courtesy, not the purchasing of popularity. Values are being mixed up here. It is important to note that, if one thinks that popularity, position in the charts, being artist or vendor of the month, and so forth, are of no importance or value, why not simply ignore those things altogether? Why is there a need to go through the effort of broadcasting, discussing, or even campaigning against them? Good art is the synergistic result of hard work, popularity, creativity, intelligence, and, above all else, sensitivity and humbleness. It is a social and cultural process, as much as a technical and inspirational one. There actually are some shameful things going on at RR, but they are of another nature. They have to do with the deception of posting comments praising someone's work only to, behind their backs, give them a poor rating on the said work, doing so without ever offering any sort of constructive criticism. They also have to do with making malicious comments meant simply to put down an artist, or being so proud of oneself as to believe that if you are not on the top it is only because you have been unfairly short-changed by lesser artists who bargain for votes. These are the types of things that we should be wary of, not the legitimate bonds of friendship, politeness, respect, and admiration that make this virtual community so successful among digital artists. Putting people down simply because they post comments or are socially engaged is just as bad as picking on them for not posting at all or staying to themselves: one has no right to do either of those things. Thank you again for all your support and friendship, without which I would not have learn all that I have and continue too! Have a Great week Monica

I like her dream. It seems disjointed, & harmonious at the same time. Charts? What charts? Lol. I couldn't give a rats... well you know. I render basically cause, well, what else is there to do in the desert a million miles from civilization? It makes me happy. It also makes me giggle when someone just doesn't get it. You kinda' have to know me to understand most of what I do. I tend to live out my emotions on the digital canvas, so I expect it. If you don't understand or don't like one of my images, it probably means your mental health is a bit more stable. Lmao! Most artists are, after all, from histories tales, a bit whack anyway. At least I have no compunction to cut off my ear & send it to anyone. (smile) Hugz ")

I applaud you for your insight Monica and I also have to agree with Lou. I have been quite pleased by the comments and undoubtedly compelled to improve by the criticism but what I enjoy the most about this sight is the friends that I have come to know and the amazing art they create that is so inspiring. This is another truly graceful and magnificent work of art for you and I truly appreciate you sharing it but most of all I appreciate your friendship and I hope I keep it always! Joe

What an exquisitely classical composition. The ballerina has exactly the right tone of poise, composure, and grace that so characterizes both men and women skilled in the art. The dress is simply stunning. The way you have arranged the cascading folds and blended the coloring into the ground cover is masterful. The delicate blossoming trees provide exactly the right counterbalance. A superb piece. Also, if your courtroom summations are anything like your Manifesto, you must be hell on wheels! You have obviously struck a unanimously receptive chord.

Yes, Monica, your words are true. I also do not understand why so many make themselves so dependent on any rankings. I'm just not often enough here in the forum to register such transactions. Maybe I'm a bit naive. But I am doing so in the first level to remain in contact with nice people to enjoy their work, leave my stupid comments and I look forward to for anyone who lives out of creativity. Your picture is such a beautiful symbiosis between dream and reality. Beautifully done!

Very neat colour combination, and the use of the reflected image for the background is a very cool idea. I agree with the points you raise (um... I sorta thought the charts went the way of the dodo). I'd add that for myself, starting out here for a long time I didn't feel confident enough to launch into long comments - though now you can't get me to shut up :) - and I'm not really that good a wordslinger (face it, some days "Me like good picky-pic! Yummy!" is the best you'll get out of me). So my comments may sometimes be lacking, but are heartfelt. Prior to this week I would still have been doubting your statement on the way people have been commenting, but I've seen on two instances how different people have actually complained about mediocre art on the website that should be consigned to the beginner's gallery & such rubbish. Really? Is that the way some people want to behave? Thankfully, everybody I've actually 'met' here have been genuinely kind & open (definitely you included) but I guess in any community you have a few warped souls. OK. Shutting up now. ;)

Don't let it get to you Monica, you do good work, that's all that matters, I have been around this place since 1999 and it has always been the same, in any community of this size you will always have a percentage of morons but if you give them enough rope they eventually hang themselves, so why worry. PS your pictures is excellent

A beautiful image, Monica. I love the surrealistic symbolism at work there. You are the mistress of magical imagery! And thank you for your wise and eloquent comments. You have succeeded in restoring my faith in this community. Or at least, in some of its members. Bless you.

Very well said Monica. I've not experienced such issues directly myself here at RR (though I do get wrapped for bad language now and again) but I've seen it other people's galleries. I've always believed that if someone takes the time to comment (no matter how briefly) then you have made an impression upon them. And of coarse I like to return the favour when I can. Often, such comments open the door for one to experience something new in someone else' gallery. By the way, I love the colours in this rendering.
