For several months now, a disturbing trend has been emerging in the ratings given to my images. Its like this... Whenever I put up any new work, people begin to visit my gallery and start to comment and vote. Initially, all goes well, with practically all comments being positive, the ratings assigned neatly following the praise given. Suddenly, the mean ratings drop from 5.00 to something like 4.96 to 4.98, indicating the existence of a very small number of people who assigned low scores, though there are no corresponding critical comments made. After a while, the mean ratings magically climb back up to 5.00 again, though just in time to miss the deadline to make it into the best rated charts. It is all so regular that I already have a pretty good idea of who is giving out the low scores.
This has been going on systematically for quite a while now, following a very exact pattern that repeats itself flawlessly. It seems to be happening right now to my last work, with the ratings dropping mysteriously once the comments reach more or less to half of the 4th page. Lets see how it goes from here.
The interesting things are (a) the mysteriously low ratings given, (b) the complete absence of criticism in the comments following the lower grades assigned, and (c) the strange "correction" in the ratings after it is too late to make any charts.
This is upsetting not really because of the low ratings given or the exclusion from the top of the charts, for I am a big girl and can certainly take some online criticism, especially if it is positive. It is the complete lack of any comments pertaining to flaws in the work and, yet, there still being low scores given, that reeks of ill faith.
Therefore, I once again ask all my visitors to please voice their negative comments if you have them. Just don't hand out deceptive praise followed by a harsh judgement in the score given. I know that the problem is stemming from just a very small number of people, most of whom I have already identified.
Just so not leave anything unsaid, I wish you all a happy new year.

Very nice work Monica. I ran into the same problem when I first started and so I decided that I did not need the ratings and so I just dropped it from my page. I have yet to see any of your work that deserves anything less than a 5 I wish you and your family a Merry Christmas and a Happy New Year

Super! Very meticulously crafted image. A very minor critical comment: The light on her face is just a tad too bright and doesn't match the "cool" colours of the rest of the image. If rating was enabled I would have given it 5 stars without hesitation. Honestly, sometimes I don't bother to give a rating. I mean what are you supposed to rate anyway? The technical quality of the image? How much you enjoyed it? The sentiment or message of the image? All 3? I think the comments are more useful in conveying exactly what I think.

Well I don't really have anything negative to say. This is just a lovely holiday image, made more moving by the fact that so many are without power in their homes this day. The strong presence of blue being very effective. Alas, when I do not like a rendering I tend to just not comment or rate it. My sensibility being that, so what if I don't like something, others might. And that's okay by me. Anyways, I hope you are having a very Merry Christmas this day and all my best for the New Year.

I have no interest in "ratings", but I rate if it is available on the post. several years ago someone accused me of giving a low rating when they did not even have enough comments to generate a "rating". they had their mind made up and nothing I could say would alter their thinking. it use to be real crazy back around 2005-2008. I finally just removed the option to rate my work, and then I had someone mad because I had chose to remove it.

marvellous image as usual!! Merry Christmas! I removed the "rate" option and I don't rate anyone. As a retired teacher I rated too many people in my life that I' feed up with rating. Anyway you've my solidarity.

My personal philosophy, if I can't say anything nice I don't say anything at all. If I don't like an image I make no comment or rating. I really don't analyze other's work, it either resonates with me or it doesn't. for example, in this image I like the different shades of blues, her face and the doves so I say nice things rate it high and move on. I don't even look at the rating charts so I couldn't tell you what anyone's were so buck up Monica. I give it a 5 for the aforementioned reasons.

Quite frankly, I don't think a "5" is enough for virtually anything I've seen you post, Monica - more like 500... And this beautiful image is no exception. Your art is unique and beautiful, my friend! My theory is that it's just someone who is jealous, and has figured out how to reduce your chances of making the 'Art Charts.' Some folks are just petty like that, and aren't worth wasting time with. That's time better used for creating art. I think I've made the charts 3 or 4 times at most in over 4 years here at Rendo - big deal. Seeing the enjoyment my friends and fellow artists get from my art / photography is by far much more meaningful than seeing my name in some ratings chart. Anyway, I hope you continue to create your wonderful art! A very Merry Christmas and Happy and Prosperous New Year from me and the T.N.A. Girls!

You are right with your note and you don't seem to be the only artist with this problem. I also think it's cowardly and sometimes it makes me sad that people aren't able to help each other any more. But that's only sometimes. Most of the time I'm happy that I found a cool hobby ... and so many other cool people and artists!! Best wishes for you too, Monica!!! :-)
