Subject: Wing good enough to make me leave lw

i just downloaded the wings app and have to say as a modeler its damn powerful and a well thought out program so good i may actauly do my next model in it to see how it goes this coming from someone that owns maya and lw says alot i think ! just thought id post to hear from others !

airflamesred ( ) posted Fri, 10 January 2003 at 5:31 PM

Is it better than metasequioa - everyones raving about it on the bryce forum?

ElectricAardvark ( ) posted Fri, 10 January 2003 at 7:04 PM

Really? I found it to be a bit sluggish.

jstro ( ) posted Fri, 10 January 2003 at 7:24 PM

I'm a long time Wings user. It's a wonderful app, and at a great price point too! :-) And to think that it has not even reached the 1.0 release yet. EA - how long ago did you try it? Bjorn has been tweaking it to speed it up. If it's been awhile, you may want to try it again. jon

I've been using it a few months now, every now and then a release will have a bug, but it's amazing how fast it gets fixed. before wings, I used rhino only for modeling, it was quite a change to get used to, but after a few tips and pointers, I pretty much use it for all my modeling now

BazC ( ) posted Sat, 11 January 2003 at 4:02 AM

I've been using it for a few months now, I'm stuck using an old version (about 3 months old!)till I can upgrade to OS10.2, the current version is a lot better even though I love my old version. Bjorn recently announced his plans for Wings once the modeller is finalised. He intends to add bones, morphs and animation, it should be a hell of an app! To think this has been created almost single handedly by one man! Many people think it has the potential to be the best subdivision modeller available. I just wish the built in renderer was a little better. It does integrate with a few renderman compliant renderers which are of very good quality and free but not very user friendly :o( I'd like the interface to look a litle better too, it's very clean and efficient but looks a little amateurish. Doesn't match the quality of the app. Oh by the way Travis, you'll have to try Klaykos'(sp?) plugins once he gets them working with the new version, they're excellent! Pretty amazing when the app develops faster than the plugins! Baz

ElectricAardvark ( ) posted Sat, 11 January 2003 at 4:25 AM

OK..I gave it another looksie...and your right. Vast improvement from what I tried before. This is a very cool modeler. I will be getting into it when I finish my current projuct. I think I'm gonna like this :)

BazC ( ) posted Sat, 11 January 2003 at 6:41 AM

Oops that should have been Bjorng not Bjorn and Kayos not Klaykos. Baz

puzzledpaul ( ) posted Sat, 11 January 2003 at 1:21 PM

Whilst Kayos(III) is correct for one of the plugin developers, I think it's probably clacos' plugins you're talking about - if modelling (rather than rendering) plugins are the topic - and yes they're well worth d/loading. (details on main Wings3d site or main forum) Since it's possible to get previous versions of Wings - try them with one of these - nothing to loose :) Like Jon, I've been using the app since 0.80 and would highly recommend trying it - obviously your other 2 (commercial) apps can do stuff Wings can't - but there's no good reason why it can't complement these - if you 'get on' with using it? Since there's nothing that says you have to use any particular app - just use whatever is the easiest for whichever bit ....... If you've never tried it - which seems to be the case, you've got a treat in store (imo) ....but I'm biased :) pp

Is Wings better than Anim8or for modeling? I'm playing with Anim8or for over 4 months and I can export to OBJ and 3DS. I eventually found the french documentation in PDF format. Is the Wings doc in a PDF format ?

pauljs75 ( ) posted Sat, 11 January 2003 at 7:43 PM

I have both Wings3D and Anim8or, and I started out on the wireframe modeling with Anim8or. I've gotta say that in some aspects I like the Wings interface better for modeling, as I can rapidly position and build a model by clicking with the mouse instead of going to the menus. Anim8or is just about as straight forward as Wings. Anim8or does have its bugs when it comes to selecting things (it prefers the background parts to foreground, which isn't very intuitive.) Each seems to have its own advantages though. I still haven't found anything like an absolute coordinate system in wings yet, which Anim8or has (as far as I know, Wings only lets me punch in relative coordinate positions.) Wings also assumes some things about the mesh that Anim8or doesn't. Sometimes it seems a good thing and sometimes it doesn't. This can make the poly's faces act funny at edges, etc. Also Wings will not allow you to connect points sometimes when building meshes. But I suppose it all depends on what one is trying to do.

Yes, it's available in PDF. Just click the link. It's a little out of date, but ought to good enough to get one started. Sorry, not in French yet, but anyone is free to make a translation that wants to. :-) I'll update it when it's very close to final release, but probably not before. jon

Wings 0.98.06b is out today. It is a rather radical change from prior releases wherein the workspace is now a proper resizable window within the application window, the Icon Bar has been moved to the top of the Geometry window, and smart highlighting is a little smarter. All in all a big improvement, in my opinion, but it makes my user manual very dated. I may even have to consider a re-release of the UM now. :-) jon

Oh boy! Bjn never sleeps, huh??? The updates coming faster than anyone has time to try out the one before...LOL! Poor Clacos with all his broken Plug-Ins...

How about posting some links for wings tutorials?

Might try Tutorial Central on the main Wings board. Plus there is the Quadraped Tutorial right here in this forum. jon

yeah i really like this modeler and the creator is amazing he aparently listens to alot of my friend ambient whispers advice and implements them right away what a cool and smart guy ! can anyone link these plug ins here for us as well !

Here's the link to Clacos' plugin page. These do not work with the latest version of Wings but it is clearly stated which version of Wings they do work with.

TRAVISB ( ) posted Mon, 13 January 2003 at 11:43 AM

well The latest version is damn near mirai without the riggina and boning tools lol I LOVE THIS APP !

Anunnaki ( ) posted Mon, 13 January 2003 at 6:34 PM

I need help here. I downloaded Wings after reading about it here and there. I don't get it. If you have a powerful modeling program like Lightwave why would you want to use Wings instead. It seems to be fast and efficient; OpenGL is very fast indeed. But beyond that I don't see beyond that it is a free modeller for free rendering programs. Or explain to me what Wings does better than other modelling programs. Thanks in advance. Vincent D. Brumback

Reyals ( ) posted Mon, 13 January 2003 at 7:34 PM

Well I use truespace and wings together and the main reason I like wings for modelling (at least for certain types of models) ... are the selection tools which are not available in truespace ... for example ...
one key press to select an edge loop or and edge ring!!!
in truespace that would involve a painstaking process of selecting edges and rotating the view and selecting edges repeat repeat repeat. plus it has "magnets" which I don't have in truespace. Also, adding detail to a mesh is easier (at least for me) in wings to add a new edge loop to an existing mesh is just two or three clicks ... in truespace I would have to "draw each line one by one"

I can't speak for the LW users but those are a couple reasons why I like wings.

Steve

TRAVISB ( ) posted Mon, 13 January 2003 at 10:00 PM

They are difrent apps with difrent strengths for sure i wouldnt give up lw becuase lw is a solid app but wings has a great modeler and the tools work well its fast and easy and enables you to work with edges that lw doesnt which is for some a great way to model the cost of a app is irrelevant the tools and workflow however are not one thing wings does that is very useful for modelers of other apps is let you set your rotation and camera to the way your app works like maya 3d studio etc

markdc ( ) posted Tue, 14 January 2003 at 3:24 AM

It still doesn't support subdivision surfaces interactively as far as I can tell. Other than that, it is a nice modeler.

BazC ( ) posted Tue, 14 January 2003 at 5:35 AM

markdc, what does that mean? Is that where the subdivided object is displayed along with a control cage? If so it would be a nice addition! Baz

markdc ( ) posted Tue, 14 January 2003 at 11:59 AM

Baz, That's exactly what I mean. If it had that I'd start using it more. If they had written the app in C++ I would take a shot at it, but I don't have time to learn Erlang... -Mark

BazC ( ) posted Tue, 14 January 2003 at 2:18 PM

Thanks for clearing that up! Baz

Anunnaki ( ) posted Tue, 14 January 2003 at 7:23 PM

Well so far there is really nothing special Wings does. I'm not trying to start a heated debate or anything. I have trueSpace and Lightwave so I was just wondering what all the excitment was about. Wings is a very powerful free program. Perhaps if I play with it some more I'll understand it better. I like some of its concepts like it selection colors of red, green and yellow that corrispond to warning, caution and all clear. But the problem is finding the time to use it. Modeling is a difficult enough without having to learn another program. Vincent D. Brumback

nu-be Sorry about that. I did not realize the link was broken. I'll contact Bjorn and see if he can fix it. Thanks for pointing it out. jon -edit- Actually, it's still there. But for some reason direct linking to it from here does not seem to work. Go to the Wings Warm and Fuzzy Forum, the Q&A Section and look in the User Manaul Now Available thread (see link) and click on the link to the PDF and it seems to download just fine. jon
