Subject: What's up with the Mac version? Or should I not ask...

PAGZone ( ) posted Sat, 01 February 2003 at 11:55 PM · edited Thu, 25 July 2024 at 5:16 AM

If memory serves, Mac users were supposed to get P5 by the end of 2002?? There was also suposed to be an announcement long before that. Hmmm Maybe with all the economic crudola a Mac version is not going to happen? Thoughts? -Paul

An easy out I think - blaming it on Apple ! Other small companies manage dual platform software ok. More like perhaps CL doesn't consider us a particularly important customer group anymore --- and that's going by the very disinterested tone I've personally got from them when I've needed customer support recently. (Though actually a couple of years ago there was a small European support office in Ireland and They were just fantastic.) There are TONS of threads on this whole subject in the forum, have a look --- lots of Mac users are raising hopeful eyes towards the upcoming Daz Studio. According to Daz their "intentions" are to release both versions at the same time. Even if there is some delay as with Dial Cleaner it surely won't be anything like this P5 nonsense ! My vote goes to Daz just based on the niceness of their customer support - but perhaps I'm just easy. P5 sounds a bit of a nightmare to me anyway.

I think even the most loyal CL mac users have given up on a mac version of Poser 5. How long has the PC version been out now anyway? If you want a better render engine for your Poser scenes get Vue4. It at least does reflections and decent looking water. If you really want to boost your Poser scenes get Lightwave or Cinema 4D!

P5 ain't bad as long as you are willing to have your "Fast" system run like a 486 with 16 MB of ram. I was using P5 solid since it's release until yesterday. when I finally said to myself I'd rather render than wait to load the app, wait to load a figure, wait to pose the figure, wait to add more props and other figures, and finally wait to render. Now Don't get me wrong, I'm not bashing CL. These are just the facts I see, from what my system does when I use 5. The renders did look better and firefly was the bomb. The ability to stack folders and clean up my files was a true godesnd. But the simple fact was I wasn't having fun. Now CL would ask for my system spec, OS, apps running, shoe size, mothers maiden name, and hat size. and I would give it to them with the detailed description of what I had happen. I followed thier advise and did the clean poser installs the OS installs the update every driver known to man, and added thier service releases. But 5 run twice as slow as 4Pro pack. artifacts meshes as you pose them. Still I would dread opening poser, I felt as tho I was walking in a minefield, just one mis-click and poof! So, I'm sorry CL. I tried to bear with you, I did all I could to work with you, Supported you with my money, my time, and my meeger talent. But Poser 5 has worn me down to where deleteing all my 3d stuff and just surf for porn or something. So I've gone back to what works. I've gone back to bloated folders, file name restrictions, render limitaions, walked away from a very cool render engine and a cooler and very detailed material editor. I've gone back to having fun. To those who think you have the patience, that you have the techincal abiltiy, and the stammina. I honestly wish you luck with poser5, I really do. I guess I was just not strong enough..

Yes, there will be a Mac version of Poser 5, as well as localized versions for the European and Japanese market. SR3 is being worked on too.
Poser is our most successful product and will receive updates and fixes.

Thanks for the update. But if P5 is running so crummy on a P4 3.06 ghz system, how is it going to run on my Mac G4 dual 450 with 1GB ram? Likley not good. My other apps run extremley well. By other apps I mean Carrara 2, Strata 3.8, Vue 4.1 (runs awesome with the ATI Radeon 8500!), Photoshop 7, etc, etc, etc,. Anyway here's to hopping you guys get it right. By the way: "To fully support the entirely new engineering standards from Apple, and to ensure the stability of the Mac OSX version, Curious Labs has decided to extend the time spent on development and quality assurance..." What does this mean? What new engineering standards? Are you referring to programming using Cocoa or Carbon? As for carbon, an app can be carbonized without a complete rewrite. I am afraid this looks like an escape goat to me.... -Paul

*What new engineering standards?*OS X has different UI guidelines than OS 9, e.g. how you have to respect the Dock, a few new or changed hotkeys, etc. Also, there are changes on the backend, like support for UFS. Some API calls from the classic MacOS toolbox are not present in OS X at all.
Yes, carbonizing does not require a complete rewrite. But it does require quite some work nonetheless.

I agree with you but gui changes, and hotkeys are not engineering standards. engineering standards would be things likewhat you mentioned with API calls and etc. Most of the API calls are still there even if they have ben deprecated. My whole point is that this is a cop out and an excuse on CL's part. The introduction of windows XP brought allot of changes to windows, yet they did not have a problem getting a version out for XP/2000! The bottom line is that CL does not have the dedicated resources to work on the Mac version and they cant come out and state that as they will piss their mac customers off. Eovia did not have a problem with a simultaneous release of Carrara, nor did Adobe with PS7, nor Macromedia with MX, I could go on and on....
