Subject: Poser 5 to Poser 4; or is it necessary?

See ( ) posted Tue, 18 February 2003 at 4:51 PM · edited Mon, 09 December 2024 at 4:53 AM

I need to create a character of myself in Poser 5. I then need to use the character to make animations that include using Mimic. I want to use Vue 4 with Mover 4 for the rendering environment, because I have constructed a 16 computer render farm from brand new 2,000k hz computers. I am planning on using Vue's render cow for the animation renderings. I own and have installed full versions of Poser 4 and Pro pack as well as Poser 5 with services pack 2.1. How would you propose I proceed?
Can I make my character in Poser 5 and then import it somehow into Poser 4? (No mention is made in the Poser documentation about moving in this direction.)
Can I go directly from Poser 5 into Vue to make the animations?

Poser 5 will not import directly into Vue. You may be able to create your character in P5, import into P4 and then go into Vue. However, unless you are using one of the so-called "great new features" of P5 I do not see the need. I no longer even attempt to use P5 in ANY of my projects. It simply was not worth the hassle. My honest opinion, See, is to stick with Poser 4, Pro Pack and Vue. You'll still get great results and the exasperation and stress you avoid from Poser 5 will allow you to live longer. Thanks, Therefore the issue now is how can I move a Poser 5 generated face or character into Poser 4. Poser 5 has a system for generating a face from pictures of a person's head. I need to use a head made from mine (those in charge are demanding this).

Ah, the face room. I wish I could advise further, but as I stated I gave up on Poser 5. Stripped it from the one system it was on, boxed it up and sent it to its much deserved cyber-grave. I can't say if importing Don or Judy into P4 is even possible. I can't remember. The P5 experience is one I have tried to block from memory. You may want to scan the messages here, find one of those who have had one of those "no problems whatsoever, everything working just great" spiritual experiences with Poser 5 and IM them to see if they would be willing to advise and help. One problem to remember is that you are very limited in the size of the map you can use for the Face Room... 512x512 I believe. You might want to consider morphing-shaping the face in Poser 4 and mapping your face texture onto that. Take care, be well, keep flying. casamerica

Good news See, Don & Judy will work in Poser4, it was one of the first things I tried :) the one thing I didn't try was changing them in the face room then importing into poser4, at least you have a starting point in your experiment ;)

Experiments (wip) which could interest you... I am currently trying some ways/tricks to import P5 animations (textures, blablabla) into Vue4. The link above presents my first very quick render (QuickTime format. 326 ko) with Judy character 'morphed' in the Face Room. To be continued.

See, you can't go wrong listening to Phoul. When it comes to animation, he's one of the resident geniuses around here. His work will amaze you. And though c1rcle and I differ on the relative worth of Poser 5, he'd be one of those I'd recommend you exchange a few messages with. He's defintely got more patience and forgiveness than I. Here's hoping they can point you in the right direction. Take care, be well, keep flying. casamerica

thanks for the vote of confidence casamerica :) you might be surprised to find out I've reinstalled Poser4 recently as Poser5 doesn't run all the Python scripts I want to use. I'm now going down the route of setting stuff up in Poser4 then rendering in Poser5 even if it is a bit of a struggle for me with poser4 (libraries being better in Poser5).

C1rcle, how did you try them? Did you place them into 4's runtime as you would any other character or did you make a project? Phoul, I visited your link. It came up with an image, some problems with textures, but no movement. I am looking forward to any additional results. I also viewed many of your other animations. I am truly impressed. Helpful results so far. Thanks so much. See

yeah I copied them over to the P4 runtime, I had to take the cr2 & rsr from characters as well as the textures & the obj from geometries, but once I had everything where it needed to be they worked just fine.

See.

Sorry. But what do you mean? with :
I visited your link. It came up with an image, some problems with textures, but no movement.

Whereas the animations from your site itself worked flawlessly with my quicktime plugin, the animation from the link above failed to load past the point of the appearence of the initial image. I will try again..

Thanks C1rcle for the way. Phoul, Very cool. It works now. What "... some ways/tricks to import P5 animations (textures, blablabla) into Vue4" . You made my month. But what are the ways/tricks?

Phoul ( ) posted Wed, 19 February 2003 at 10:07 PM

So, here the trick I had tested.

  • Copy the following folders from P5 to P4
  • Goemetries/P5xxx
  • Textures/poser 5 Textures/figure textures/xxx
  • Create new folder in Libraries/character/xxx (replace xxx with which ever character/folder you need)
  • Set P5 preferences to do not use compression
  • Load your character and save to new library, this saves a .cr2 which P4 can read.
  • Copy .cr2 from P5 to P4
  • Load new figure and save as PZ3
  • Load Vue4 and import to your scene and you are done.

Phoul, Just so I am perfectly clear: 1st I would create the new character using the face room. 2. Copy the following folders from P5 to P4 * Goemetries/P5xxx * Textures/poser 5 Textures/figure textures/xxx 3. Create new folder in Libraries/character/xxx (replace xxx with which ever character/folder you need) 4. Set P5 preferences to do not use compression 5. Load (or create it?) your character and save to new library, this saves a .cr2 which P4 can read. 6. Copy .cr2 from P5 to P4 7. Load new figure and save as PZ3 (into P5? and this is when I would use mimic and otherwise animate?) 8.Load Vue4 and import to your scene and you are done. Thanks so much for your excellent expert help.

Phoul ( ) posted Thu, 20 February 2003 at 12:44 AM

See. I am not sure to be an expert, sincerely. I am very new with P5. anyway, thanks :-) Btw thanks to casamerica ;-)
Well...
In P5 and its Face Room You should start to create your character, save it in "New figure". In that directory you'll find a new cr2 with a new obj file. You'll have to copy them into the P4's New Figure directory. Check the other step... Work your animations in P5. Save Pz3. Open Vue import... Should work.

casamerica ( ) posted Thu, 20 February 2003 at 1:10 AM

thanks for the vote of confidence casamerica :)<<< Hey, I may still think that P5 is a load of gorram, but I realize that there are some here with a great deal more patience and forgiveness than I who might be able to help a newbie out. You happen to be one of them. ;-) >>>I'm now going down the route of setting stuff up in Poser4 then rendering in Poser5 even if it is a bit of a struggle for me with poser4 (libraries being better in Poser5).<<< That is about the only thing about P5 I do miss... the library setup. It is a pain to keep switching libraries in and out with P4. But at least my animations render properly in P4 or P4-to-Vue. I'm just starting to use python scripting within P4PP. It does make certain tasks a bit easier. Take care, be well, keep flying. casamerica

I have used Poser since version 2 and using 4 have generated a number of Mimic animations, which include a 3d virtual classroom and my animated professor for tutoring students in genetics. Because I use more than 25 different apps, teach genetics, cell biology, embryology..., do research and am getting old, I tend to worry over the details of program use when needed and dump much of the detail when not using it. My issue here was as originally stated: Use of Vue 4 with Poser 5. Things have changed since casamerica's first response to this thread, that it could not be done. Now, because of Phoul's efforts, it seems we can use Poser 5 with Vue 4 and Mover 4. I was hoping to save time and have with the excellent help of Phoul and c1cle. I hope that Phoul re-posts his method in the Vue forum; there are members who would certainly appreciate the info there. I posted there as well but got a terse single response "No". Thanks for your last response Phoul; I am a bit obsessed with clarity. I will update you via your site later if you like with links to my finished projects. As far as Poser 5 is concerned, the 2.1 service pack seemed to have stabilized everything quite a bit for me. Most of the problems with this version were from the piracy protection scheme, which they removed. I wish Curious Labs and E-onsoftware the greatest success. I would hate to see progress stall with Poser 4. Thanks to all, for your help and patience. Signing off, See
