I've heard a whisper that they're having problems with the OSX version & they're not releasing it till all versions can be released together, September is looking to be the month for Daz Studio unless things have changed again.

mickmca ( ) posted Wed, 25 June 2003 at 7:35 AM

Not a joke. Just a classic example of overconfidence and an audience convinced that the idea of a bird in the bush is better than a bug in the hand. ;)

Kelmar ( ) posted Wed, 25 June 2003 at 8:04 AM

To a hobbist like my wife and I, shelling out 200 bucks to upgrade to P5 knowing that there are still bugs and not all the functions would be useful to us is out of question. If we have that kind of money we would have upgraded our computer first. The idea of a free or low cost basic program with plugins you can buy later sounds very attractive. The question is how the execution going to be, is it going to be problem ridden like the initial release of P5? Time will tell.

It would be nice if we could see something new. I'm as patient as the the next guy but any kind of progress report or even a ...gasp!... actual render of a Mil figure would be enough for me to be happy and crawl back into my cave for awhile.

Axe_Gaijin, Actually that was me. I had a bean burrito and... The last thing that DAZ needs is to hand out a product before it is ready considering the tempers that flare around here when software is less than... "usable" (never having actually having been involved in such rants... yeh right). Given that there will be a new learning curve, I for one would like to see it when DAZ believes it's ready to be seen. Visque

mateo_sancarlos ( ) posted Wed, 25 June 2003 at 1:16 PM

That would be a real bummer if OSX was the tail that wagged the Daz Studio "dog" (not that I'm saying it's a dog, actually I think it will be pretty good, especially if they iron out most of the bugs first). I was reading in last week's Economist where it costs $10 to fix a bug on a programmer's desktop during coding of each module, $100 to fix a bug after the modules are assembled into the alpha version, $1000 to fix a bug in beta testing, and $10000 to fix a bug after the CD copies ship. This is what killed Curious Labs management prior to the Germans taking over - they just had no understanding of real-world economics. But I have a good feeling that Daz management is more down-to-earth.

xoconostle ( ) posted Wed, 25 June 2003 at 1:29 PM

DAZ is doing everyone a favor by taking their time to make sure that the app won't be released prematurely. They're clearly not going to pull a fast one on Poser enthusiasts that way that .. well ... someone else did. They're showing respect for their public and for their own integrity, which is a lot more than I can say for the way that HoYoYo asked their question. Needlessly rude and immature. Trolls are a bore.

Axe_Gaijin ( ) posted Wed, 25 June 2003 at 2:29 PM

"Actually that was me. I had a bean burrito and..." well... that gives a whole new meaning to the old internet saying; "Don't feed the Trolls" :D

Jaager ( ) posted Wed, 25 June 2003 at 2:30 PM

In reference to #10 - If the economic bubble had lasted a year longer, CL may have had the resources it needed. But, after having the QA staff cut to 20% of its original, the CL management was under a gun to release - finished or not - or face execution. It was released in the "or not" state and they were still executed. The choice to release - when and in what state - was not their's. It was mandated from afar using arbitrary deadlines. Given the nature of the pressure they were under, EGISYS had them targeted for a much longer time. In reality, the whole thing never recovered from the Ponzie scheme that was MC.

maclean ( ) posted Wed, 25 June 2003 at 2:47 PM

'is it going to be problem ridden like the initial release of P5?' Well, if they release it in a hurry, just because people shout loudly for it, then no doubt it will have problems. 'Needlessly rude and immature' Yep! I agree. mac

FyreSpiryt ( ) posted Wed, 25 June 2003 at 7:15 PM

It'll be out when people stop whining about how they have to have X in the very first partial beta release or it will be completely unusable forever and ever and they'll cut off their nose to spite their face by never ever giving it a second chance. Even though the FIRST free beta release was, according to the press release, was going to be very very basic, and once the critical core code is validated, the SECOND still FREE beta release would add more functionality like saving, posing, etc. Personally, I'd love to just have a save-disabled, no features viewer of the quality they've shown in screen captures; that alone would do some SERIOUS help in speeding up my texturing work. Even UVMapper Pro doesn't have fine enough detail for my needs, and it's very tedious to render every few steps. Why don't we all be patient and just quit our bitching, huh? DAZ has nothing to gain AT ALL by messing with our heads, so why in the world would you assume they're doing so?

milamber42 ( ) posted Wed, 25 June 2003 at 8:42 PM

Hmm.... Lots of rumors: Delayed because of OS X Delayed because of the addition of save functionality Delayed until sometime in September "They said it was gonna be a while" And DAZ is very quiet. The term "vaporware" comes to mind :)

Tempus Fugit ( ) posted Wed, 25 June 2003 at 9:04 PM

I'd rather they take the time to do it right, then have to suffer through something that was rushed out.

bijouchat ( ) posted Wed, 25 June 2003 at 9:04 PM

I think they should take MORE time and create a stable application. Nothing I hate more than an incomplete app released too early. however I think its really a non-topic until its released. I know its not vapor, we've seen screenshots of it already. But if it has trouble, it should be worked on to solve the issues, instead of letting us realise its got serious issues and dismissing it unfairly, just because it was released too soon. I guess this is a case of ... you're damned if you do release, its bugware, damned if you don't release, its vaporware.

FyreSpiryt ( ) posted Wed, 25 June 2003 at 9:11 PM

What would be the motive behind vaporware? Vaporware is used to destroy a competitor by releasing rumors of a competing and better software when there isn't actually one. If DAZ were to do this, they would destroy their own market.

c1rcle ( ) posted Thu, 26 June 2003 at 3:33 AM

Come on when have Daz not delivered on their promises? Haven't they taken Mimic & improved it 200%? They've already proved they can do it with Mimic so why wouldn't they be able to do it with Daz Studio? Daz Studio will be out this year & it will be good, slightly bugged to start with maybe, but it'll be good all the same. Don't forget going right back they created the default figures for poser (Posette & Dork) then they improved on them with Mike/2, Vicky/2/3 & Steph. I have faith in Daz that they can pull it off we just have to give them the time they need to get it right.

BazC ( ) posted Thu, 26 June 2003 at 3:56 AM

As far as I'm concerned Daz can take as long as they like and I'm sure they'll deliver a great product. But I'm damned if I know why they're being so tight lipped about it. If it's taking longer than expected why not say so? It's clearly delayed for some reason. "They said it would be a while" is not the way I remember it, I got the impression that a Spring/early summer release would be the latest we could expect it. The Studio forum on their site has been "coming soon" for about two months and their press release still says they're aiming for 1,000,000 downloads by the end of the year, that's a lot of downloads even if they released it today (about 6000 a day)!. I'd just like to hear something from them, no rush, no pressure, just what's happening? - Baz

lmckenzie ( ) posted Thu, 26 June 2003 at 4:29 AM

I seem to recall the same restless clamoring before Poser 5. Be careful what you wish for and how soon you wish for it. Once you get beyond "Hello World," a programming project ALWAYS takes longer than you predicted. At some point, you learn to stop predicting and keep your mouth shut 'til it's done :-)

maclean ( ) posted Thu, 26 June 2003 at 2:24 PM

'The term "vaporware" comes to mind' The phrase above from milamber is an example of the kind of loose talk that gets this community a bad name. I don't want to be rude, but you might want to think twice before making an obviously inaccurate and misleading statement. We've seen screenshots of the app. We know DAZ is a reputable company. And we know they have nothing to gain by promising something that doesn't exist. So the above comment either came out of sheer ignorance or sheer stupidity. I hope it was the former. I agree they're being 'tight-lipped' about it. So what? It's their app. They know best when it'll be ready. There's been the same impatience shown with every major new release from DAZ. The minute vicki 3 was available people were shouting loudly for Mike 3. 'you're damned if you do release, its bugware, damned if you don't release, its vaporware' Damn right! mac

Allen9 ( ) posted Thu, 26 June 2003 at 4:53 PM

[[The minute vicki 3 was available people were shouting loudly for Mike 3.]] Actually, some of us have been shouting for Mike 3 since well before vicki 3 was released, and aren't really all that excited about vicky 3 at all. ;o)

milamber42 ( ) posted Thu, 26 June 2003 at 7:39 PM

Mclean,

Interpretations (and opinions) vary :) Did I say that DAZ|Studio was vaporware?  No.  As you correctly quoted, I said "the term vaporware comes to mind :)".  There is a difference, in my opinion. :-)

And DAZ being tight-lipped has caused some people [like me :)] to be a little anxious.  They showed us Studio in November -- over 6 months ago.  And their press release at that time ( http://www.daz3d.com/pages/dp/press/press_releases/dazstudio.html ) states the following:

"No price or release date has been announced, though DAZ projects to have DAZ|Studio completed by mid 2003."

The original product information page (http://www.daz3d.com/products/studio-announce.html) stated the following schedule:

        Anticipated Stages of program completion::
        · Limited alpha
        · Public beta, Mimic® 2.0 available for sale
        · 2nd beta release, Lightwave 3D® and 3ds max® Plug-ins available
        · DAZ|Studio Basic 1.0
        · Gradual addition of Studio plug-ins with advanced features
        [Schedule subject to change]

And the current schedule (dated January 31, 2003), is posted above.  Since we are at mid-year, it would not hurt DAZ if they gave the communities an update.  And showing us some sample renders would not hurt either ;-)

Cheers!
[Apologies if you got multiple emails about the post -- problems with HTML format...and typos :)]

bijouchat ( ) posted Thu, 26 June 2003 at 7:51 PM

just goes to show that Daz shouldn't tell us peeps what they're doing. g Schedules slip. Happens. I'm not worried, as I doubt I will change from using Carrara Studio 2 to render anyway.

milamber42 ( ) posted Thu, 26 June 2003 at 8:13 PM

Doh!  The current schedule was posted in the other thread!  Here it is:

  • DAZ|Studio Basic 1.0 release
  • Gradual addition of plug-ins with advanced features

[Schedule subject to change]

I do agree with a lot of other people when it comes to releasing it when it is ready.  They are not in a situation like CL.  They are in control.  I remember that Steve K. or Dan F. posted that DAZ started down the path with Studio when Metecreations announced that Poser was for sale.  That was quite a while ago.  The preview images in November indicated to me that a good chunk of the functionality for the first beta release was ready for Alpha Testing in November.  And, looking at screen shots of Mimic Pro [been procrastinating on the upgrade purchase], it appears to be quite possible that Studio and Mimic could share some scene preview and animation code.  To me, that is a sign of excellent product design.

elektra ( ) posted Fri, 27 June 2003 at 8:57 AM

Being someone who works in tech support, I can tell you that scheduled release dates often change as a result of unforseen issues popping up. Most of us know that NO program goes out completely bug-free. However, if DAZ takes more time to ensure that it's as bug-free as possible before they release it, I'm more than content to wait. However, since the Studio forum is not up at DAZ and it is mid-2003, a brief update from them is not an unreasonable request. And maybe that's the way we should be phrasing this, is as a request. "Hi Daz. We're sorry to be acting like five-year-olds on Christmas Eve and you're Santa, but we're oh so curious as to how DAZ|Studio is coming along. Is there any official update at all that can be passed on to us? Thanks" Also, FyreSpiryt is correct, the more we demand be in the initial Beta, the longer it will take to get here. I'm curious myself as to the state of DAZ|Studio and I was terrible as a child on Christmas Eve, but if there is a delay, even to end of year, that means the product will be that much better when released, I'll wait.

lmckenzie ( ) posted Fri, 27 June 2003 at 5:19 PM

Maybe CL still owes them money and they don't want to risk hammering the last nail into Poser's coffin until they get paid. Maybe since CL also reportedly mentioned problems with doing a Mac port, may, perish the thought Mac faithful, it's a bitch to do. It will apprear in due time and if it doesn't - whacha gonna do, stop buying their models? I didn't think so.
