the new G5 computer is a 64 bit based processor operating at a clock speed of 2 Ghz. The new 64 bit architecture allows an active use of up to 8 GB of hardware memory, and a faster 8x AGP graphics support. The entire G5 system has a throuhput of 16 Gbps, with a front end bus running at 1 Ghz. The new "panther" OS is code for the release of OSX version 10.3. It offers support for a video ichat, improved networking, improved searching, improved security, and improved user swapping and preference organisation. To find out more visit the apple site at www.apple.com Just thought I'd announce it - Max.

=/ I'm sorry, but as an AMD Advocate...I hate Apple/Macs/Whatever they are calling themselves now. Yes it's powerful, yes it's expensive. But I would be happier with an Amd Athlon 3200 +xp any day. Unfortunately bryce 5 works much faster on an apple, only because it was designed FOR it. My uncle has a G4, and we always get into Amd/Intel Versus Macintosh debates all the time... Buy me one, and yeah i'd use it for encoding movies and rendering....That's about it... I don't like macs for the Same reason I like AMD more than Intel.

antevark ( ) posted Wed, 16 July 2003 at 7:48 PM

3200? Do they make those? I got a new 2200 about 3 weeks ago, and it's crashed twice- the same amount my iMac G3 has in 2 1/2 years! All of the big-name graphics companies(industrial light + magic, for one) use Macs. The main difference with Intel and AMD is that you can't easily upgrade Intel, correct? True, you can't upgrade macs, but that's pretty much the only downside about 'em, they're expensive.

I don't know, I've seen the latest Mac OS's, and they're pretty cool, and kinda Windows-like, which is less intimidating (to me) But, and this is going to sound REALLY stupid, why I don't think I could "get into" a Mac...is their mouse. One button? Once they make a Mac with a three button mouse and a wheel, I'll truly start drooling. (watch, they have it now, I just don't know it) AS

They do, I've got a Mac with a dual button and wheel, maybe not three, but who needs three?

antevark ( ) posted Wed, 16 July 2003 at 8:28 PM

lol, I use a wacom tablet. Can't stand any mouse without a wheel, too.

madmax_br5 ( ) posted Wed, 16 July 2003 at 8:33 PM

All macs work with multi-button mice. They just don't ship with them in the box....so all you have to do is buy a multi-button mouse with a scroll wheel and plug it in and it works fine. Several of them are in tune with the mac graphite&carbon theming, such as this optical scroll mouse by kensington: http://www.kensington.com/html/1216.html or the bargain micro scroll optical mouse by macally: http://www.macmall.com/macmall/shop/detail.asp?dpno=965416 There is a mac counterpart for any pc peripheral you can think of pretty much. As for OSX, it is one of the most beautiful and well organized operating systems I have seen. It makes your computer feel much more pleasurable to sit in front of, because you know that navigating is so easy and beautiful. Another reason I choose mac is the reliability. I have never crashed OSX...ever...period. When an application crashes, only that application closes, everything else is fine. I've never had to have service or repairs done on this 2 year old G4 and it's running as crisply as when I bought it. My apple lcd is bright and clean, i never needed color calibration. I never needed to download drivers for anything new i bought, it even updates all the system software weekly on it's own. But the bottom line is I can count on it to do what I want when I want and how I want to do it. I don't have the patience to worry about dll files or uninstalling applications or reformatting. That's why I go with mac. My 2Cents.

This is what I got. Works like a dream, no wires, no batteries, pressure sensitive pen included. Couldn't live without it.

I'm not a Mac fan myself...I've always been a PC user and my PCs have had AMDs in them. I currently run a 1.4 GHz AMD and it's worked fine for me, outside of the fact that it runs hot. That's the one thing I don't really like. As for Mac's, their processors are much more streamlined in operation than AMDs and Intel's, therefore they run cooler, but until I HAVE to use a Mac, I'm gonna stick with my PC. There are pros and cons to both, everyone is going to have their likes and dislikes. MD (I always hated using Macromedia Authorware in college, no damn right click menus because it was designed for Mac. That drove me NUTS) Check out this parody page I did on that very same thing. You can check out the other stuff too if you'd like, kinda funny stuff from college.

PS...they were done back in 1998/1999 to give you a date idea...hehe... MD :)

AgentSmith ( ) posted Wed, 16 July 2003 at 10:57 PM

See, I knew it. I knew they would have a 3 button mouse, lol. I say 3 button, becaust the wheel can also be clicked as well as scrolled. Well, it's just money then, I guess. I do some small time PC repair on the side and have random computer parts laying around, so if I wanted to, I could construct an AMD 1800+ PC for $300-$400. In fact I'm supposed to go pick up an Intel P4 1.7Ghz PC my brothers neighbor just didn't want anymore (free)...I think it's time to network. But...I will say, Macs are beautiful freaking machines...perhaps one day. AS

AS, they just included that one button optical mouse because of the novelty. It was one of the first ones. I don't know why they're still using them, they don't work worth a *@&#;. I hate optical mouses(mice?) in case you didn't guess.

SevenOfEleven ( ) posted Sun, 20 July 2003 at 8:40 PM

When I bought my 2nd mac, I made sure I replaced the "Hockey Puck" with a decent mouse with 2 buttons. Had to use a friend's machine that had a hockey puck and it was not fun, was clicking when I did not want to. They all look sexy until the next version comes out. If a G5 were to "fall offa da truck" in front of me, probably would risk a hernia to get it home.

Apple...poor...apple. 2% of the worldwide market. It is pretty ironic that Apple would go to IBM to make a processor for them. 8X AGP innovation? PC's had it for almost a year. Hyper-Transport Technology...wait isn't that AMD's technology? First to market with a 64 bit desktop? Not quite...BOXX Technologies launched an AMD Opteron on June 4th. For all of you Apple aficionados here a few threads that might be of interest. Gotta read the AMDZONE article very informative. www.amdzone.com/articleview.cfm?articleid=1296 This one is just plain funny. Apple caught with their pants down. www.digitalvideoediting.com/2003/06_jun/editorials/cw_editorial79.htm Hope this shows that the writting is on the wall. The MAC will become a museum piece someday soon. If you are wondering I use Bryce 5. I am not good at it. That is why I have never posted a scene. I do enjoy reading the forum. Hate to trash the Mac, but the PC's have been thrashed by Mac users for ages. Apple should have used AMD processors like they were rumored to have tried. Here is the link: http://the-inquirer.net/?article=4537 (Hammer was the codename for the Opteron(SledgeHammer) , and soon to be launched, September 23, 2003, ATHLON64 (ClawHammer) families. Enjoy the reading. Sorry to post this late in the thread. I have been studying for my A+ certification, and have been oblivious to the world for some time now. I just dished out $13k for my A+ and MCSE certifications. Please excuse the late response.

MadDog31 ( ) posted Mon, 21 July 2003 at 8:43 AM

Nice post nietojo...and glad you at least got your certifications out of that money. I blew $12,000 and haven't taken the A+, Net+, or the MSFT 210 and 215 tests for the MCP. I took the Cisco CCNA but failed that one by less than 50 points. The way the school had it lined up, we took one class after another, and most of us never had the chance to study for the previous course because they wanted to start the next ones so fast. Pisses me off to this day. Sure, I can still take them, but I don't have the money to take these certs since I'm having a hard time finding ANY full-time work. Now I'm gonna have to explain that to the school loan pricks. MD :(

Hope this shows that the writting is on the wall. The MAC will become a museum piece someday soon. < Hope not because PC makers need some competition, even if its just 2% of the market. Pcs are not perfect, could use a big boost in user friendliness. Pcs are for people that like to get inside their machines and fuss with them. Macs are for people that want to get work done. nietojo what is your purpose posting that stuff anyway? If you read the posts no one was trashing PCs. Do you get a bonus for pushing AMD processors? Lets not waste our time with this PC vs Mac Bs, its not worth it.
