Subject: "The Girl" on Daz3D... are you supposed to drag april fool's jokes days after?

sandmarine ( ) posted Sun, 04 April 2004 at 10:23 PM · edited Tue, 19 November 2024 at 2:34 PM

just wondering... I'm not american, so I'm not sure if you're allowed to continue an april fool's joke any longer than April 1st.... because Daz3D seems to still be dragging the joke along, saying that Kim Goossens "The Girl" is gonna be released by them in May. I mean, i know there's a thread for this already... this thread is mostly to ask how long is april fools anyway?? is the whole month and not just one day?

Ben_Dover ( ) posted Sun, 04 April 2004 at 10:36 PM

No it's one day, April 1st. Daz's continuing April Fool's joke seems to be the "Morphing Cube" so I'd say this G.I.R.L. thing is legit.

SamTherapy ( ) posted Sun, 04 April 2004 at 11:11 PM

In the UK April Fool's is just up to Mid-day. After that, anyone who tries to play a trick is fool for the year. The Girl thing is for real, I believe.

W00T! I saw Kim Goosen's work on the Girl on a CG forum a while back... Definitely the "cutest" of ALL the 'toon girls that are out there!

Remember, kids! Napalm is Nature's Toothpaste!

milamber42 ( ) posted Sun, 04 April 2004 at 11:30 PM

DAZ has already started a G.I.R.L. World forum for the P Club members. They have confirmed that this is real. Kim Goossens is a DAZ brokered artist, and the G.I.R.L. is scheduled to be released sometime in May. This is not a joke.

milamber42 ( ) posted Sun, 04 April 2004 at 11:40 PM

Btw... Where is the original thread about the G.I.R.L. ?? I missed it..

MachineClaw ( ) posted Mon, 05 April 2004 at 12:41 AM

It was in the PClub newsletter, and the newsletter and forum for PClub members should be available. IF your a PClub member and interested in the GIRL and what you want for her you should head to the PClub forum setup for her and make sugjestions. We that are not PClub members have no say or powers of sugjestions. It's not a joke, it's gunna happen.

"soft pornographers" hmmmph :(

who3d ( ) posted Mon, 05 April 2004 at 8:13 AM

I've not read the "soft pornographers" quote directly - I haven't the time to wade through searching for all the threads (don't get me wrong, G.I.R.L. is an impressive bit of work but not the be-all and end-all of my day). I can't help but wonder at the exact nature of the comment and the context. What part, I wonder, of "soft pornographers" is meant to be detrimental? Bear with me. Having checked and double-checked how much more anatomically complete G.I.R.L. appears to be than most Poser "female" models (based on some of the now-famous renders from the original artist) I wonder if maybe it's the "soft" that he looked/looks down on, not the "pornography" part. But that's just the inquisitive side of me :) Cheers, Cliff

c1rcle ( ) posted Mon, 05 April 2004 at 8:39 AM

lol it's possible the person who posted the original "soft porn" remark wasn't even him. Does anyone else get the impression G.I.R.L will be D|S only? Poser is viewed with scorn & distain by lots of artists outside the poser world, but D|S is an unknown quantity at the moment & it would make perfect sense to have one of the best known digital artists give it his stamp of approval by releasing his model for sole use with D|S. Course I could be way off as usual but this did all start off as an April Fool joke ;)

Puntomaus ( ) posted Mon, 05 April 2004 at 8:56 AM

Nope, THE GIRL will be released for Poser and DAZ Studio as announced already at DAZ.

Please, tell me that it ain't true.....

I don't want to see the galleries infested with 1000's or 10,000's or 100,000's of interpretations of "The G.I.R.L.".

I can see it all now: The G.I.R.L. in a Temple with a sword! The G.I.R.L. meets Creepy! The G.I.R.L. riding on the back of the Pink Pony!

Oh....the pain.....the pain......

who3d ( ) posted Mon, 05 April 2004 at 11:36 AM

It's worse than you can possibly imagine. I'm assuming I can't reveal anything from the platinum club forum, but trust me - judging both by comments from DAZ and customers, this fits right in with DAZ's stated intention of "load and render" (Or "Instant Art" as it's otherwise known). Cliff

well, my question then is the same as the one I did at the Daz forums: didn't Kim Goossens say his "Girl" would never be poserized because he didn't want to see pornographic works done using her?? I mean, I admired the man for being stoke about it, and being firm in not releasing "the girl" in spite of the amount of money offered to him to do it. He had a conviction and was standing by it. And now Daz has it?? that was my gripe over at Daz... I know money rules the world, but I was thinking there would still be people with convictions stronger than money... I read kgoossens interviews and all where he was so against it. Now he literally sold out... so, you can actually buy people's convictions with money. WELCOME TO THE WORLD, ME!

DrunkMonkey ( ) posted Mon, 05 April 2004 at 3:00 PM

"soft pornographers" Geez, how do you like that? With all the sick, twisted stuff I come up with in an effort to be taken seriously as a "hard core pornographer" and my work is dismissed so easily as being only "soft". It's enough to make you spit.

mateo_sancarlos ( ) posted Mon, 05 April 2004 at 3:23 PM

I know about the hype that's needed to build up to a big sale, but doesn't "The Girl" look very similar to "Neftoon Gal"? We've seen endless posts in months past where people proudly show off their unpaid advertisements for the model of the month, so my request is for somebody to post "Neftoon Gal" next to "The Girl" so we can see if there's any worthwhile difference.

who3d ( ) posted Mon, 05 April 2004 at 3:24 PM

sandmarine:- Take this as comfort/consolation. I quit my job (oh, must be 10 years ago or so) to work for myself for less than half salary just so I could look myself in the mirror and say "There's a nice, honest guy". It worked almost as planned. Nowadays I have to say "there's a fat nice, honest guy", but the important bit is in there for me :) I do what I love and I love what I do. People keep asking me why I so rarely take holidays (I hve taken more in the 2 years sinc emy son was born than in the previous 10, maybe 15 years put together) and I have to ask them "what for?". Especially since they expect me to take the family along :( We're not ALL abut making phoney "philosophy" statements. Some of us really DO live by what we say :) An old comment/request of mine - say what you do and do what you say. Cheers, Cliff

MachineClaw ( ) posted Mon, 05 April 2004 at 5:05 PM

I'm just gunna sit back and watch Daz screw this one up too. Daz released the announcement in their PClub newsletter the same day Littlefox's Krystal was released. How nice they are to their brokers. The Girl and Kim Goossens are known in the "Real 3d community" so Daz picking it up for Daz Studio doesn't suprise me at all, goes with the philosophy they have started and stated that they want to get in that market and The Girl will give them a foothold I guess. That market "real 3d" really shuns using others works for renders, comments like "oh you didn't model that your self" as well as "oh you used poser models I see" are seen in that market all the time. Gunna be interesting to watch and see how they overcome that as well as how The Girl goes. I'm rather disapointed that Daz choose to only let PClub members voice oppinions about The Girl and get feedback. "real 3d" people aren't gunna pay to give advice about what they want to see in The Girl, and those of us that drewl over The Girl are locked out or have to join a club to ask questions or give feedback. Membership has it's privilages, yeah and ......okay I wont go there, been done to dead. Just disapointed yet again.

ChuckEvans ( ) posted Mon, 05 April 2004 at 7:20 PM

I think it's a bit unfair (or unjust) to make comments about Kim "selling out". I mean, who knows why he decided to change his mind? There could be reasons we'll never know. For example, if a person "sold out" for something in order to get money to do something even more meaningful, wouldn't that be a case of the means justifying the end? I'll certainly not make such a remark because I don't know his reasons. I would imagine he thought long and hard about it and weighed what he was "giving away" with what he would be getting. Whatever the reason is/was, I wish him good luck.

MachineClaw ( ) posted Mon, 05 April 2004 at 7:34 PM

He has a wife and a daughter, in this economy to me selling out means paying bills and rent. That interview is old also, he could have looked at the market and looked around the galleries with toonish renders and had a change of heart. People in this community change their minds all the time, I never even worried about his change of heart, I'm just glad he had one.

Jim Burton ( ) posted Mon, 05 April 2004 at 8:42 PM

Getting back to the April Fools thing, sandmarine, that idea popped into my head, too, you weren't the only one. ;-)

sandmarine ( ) posted Mon, 05 April 2004 at 9:12 PM

oh well, I didn't really mean to offend Kgoossens... it's just that I've never liked seeing people putting a foot in their mouths... or however that saying goes. I'm sure kgoossens had his reasons, and I totally support his making "the girl" available to everyone... my problem was with the stance he took previously to all this. If he ever considered selling his model, then he should have been more cautious, like "I don't think I'll ever poserize this model", kind of leaving an open door there somewhere. But I remember that he was stoic about not doing it. So I'm sure he has to pay the rent just like me... and I'm sure Daz must have offered him a good deal... good for him, but I still feel dissapointed in a way. I'm sorry for the "selling out" words, I know that may have been offensive without knowing his true reasons... well, we'll have to wait and see. And I'm with Jim Burton here, still thinking this might be a prolonged april fool's joke (even though I see it's not).

mondoxjake ( ) posted Mon, 05 April 2004 at 11:56 PM

I checked out the Kim Goossens site a long time ago and did think there was a resemblance between GIRL and Neftoon Gal. A couple of things I don't understand after all the rave postings about the GIRL at different sites: 1. Since Neftoon Gal has the strongest resemblance to GIRL over the other toon gals, why don't we see more pictures of her in the galleries, or products in the stores for her? 2. Even if GIRL is a D|S model why is info on her limited to Platinum Club members? What sort of marketing strategy can this be on Daz's part?

MachineClaw ( ) posted Tue, 06 April 2004 at 12:03 AM

If you can answer those questions you will be a rich man. Trying to figure out what sells, why, what enough support is etc is a poser marketing nightmare. Sara is free at Daz and she doesn't have all that much support. I know for me while I like the look of Neftoon Gal and guy there isn't a lot of support out there for them and I don't want to invest a lot in a non supported model. As well as Nef Gal looking like Tinkerbell/Dragons Lair too much for my liking. I have a bunch of the toon babes and each has something the others don't, and something I'm just not liking. shrug everybody has their own likes and dislikes. Like I said you figure out that mystery and you've got your self a career as a marketing research guru in the Poser land.

mondoxjake ( ) posted Tue, 06 April 2004 at 1:02 AM

I agree, MachineClaw...racking the brain trying to figure it all out is basically a waste of time. The only rule is; there are no rules... what works for this one is no good for that one. Of all the toonish gals available, it seems that Alexa gets more support and items produced than any of the others. There is something new at 3D Commune for her on almost a weekly basis, plus the freebie Alex board is very productive. Koshini gets quite a few new items also from time to time. [Another issue in all of this: Trying to seperate what some people consider anime type and toonish type can shake the beans up in the brain!]

who3d ( ) posted Tue, 06 April 2004 at 4:54 AM

"2. Even if GIRL is a D|S model why is info on her limited to Platinum Club members? What sort of marketing strategy can this be on Daz's part?" It's DAZ Platinum Club marketing strategy. They want to sell PC memberhsips, and if you're nosey enough or desperate enough then "product previews" (long touted as a benefit of PC membership) might just be enough to sway your wallet in their direction. Also, since they keep giving PC memberhsip "privelages" away to others for free or just revoking them, they probably feel they ought to honor one or two of the promises from time to time. This is obviously one of those times. Don't fret, there will be plenty of marketing hype for everyone else too in the coming months. But if you want information that you can't have for free NOW, they are willing to let you buy it. Their store is this way... | | | V Cheers, Cliff

Let me take another shot...GIRL may end up being nothing more than a spinoff of Vicky3 or Steph Petite? As far as I am concerned the PC might as well be named Vicky3/Mike3 Club as the majority of new stuff is for them. I don't use either one and think for the bucks that Steve Shanks Poser World is a better buy.

"Almost as earth-shaking as Britney Spears' marriage" She got married? "nah I think her upcoming sex-tape will be more earth-shaking than her marriage ;)" She had sex? How come you guys don't invite me to any of the GOOD parties? I nearly slipped and defended the PC for a second. Ooops! I kinda like the look of G.I.R.L., aside from a few nagging issues (around ankles, collar-bones that seem to extend to the outside of the shoulder, some geometry pinching and the fact that every render seems to have the face and hair in EXACTLY the same pose - even showing the same odd dark shadow in "her" left ear) I'd be mor einclined to buy her than any other I've seen. But "more inclined" doesn't say much I'm afraid. Neftoon girl looks pretty good from the few images there are - she ould probably benefit from a try-before-you-buy policy of some sort (Neftoon LE?) but even then I personally probably wouldn't have the dough to spare for her (shame, she looks pretty). It looks like Daz also sends out PC newsletters to anyone that has had a membership that has expired. Probably a marketing tactic to constantly remind people "what they are missing out on" . I like daz, but every time I receive the PC newsletter I hear an annoying little voice singing "nanny nanny boo boo, you cant have this this" in the background.

Anybody can get the PClub newsletter by checking the box in the account screen, I think, you can turn it off in the account screen and you will no longer get the PClub newsletter. Since almost anything iportant going on at Daz is in the PClub newsletter I have it still sent. I should probably turn it off and save myself some headaches.

No soft porn renders eh? The original renders I saw of G.I.R.L. were of her in some extremely suggestive and revealing poses - as it was in a computer graphics mag they had put those blurry bits over her naughty bits but .... There were also renders with her boobs quite clearly on show! So what exactly is soft porn if nakedness is allowed? No, I don't really want detailed definitions, thanks, I am just saying that if Mr Goossens himself renders G.I.R.L. in provocative positions why does he not want anyone else to? Personally I love this figure and would very much like to own it - however the thought of having to buy yet another whole new wardarobe for yet another figure (I kinda prefer my girls to have clothes on!) if Daz can get her to fit Vicky3 or Steph3 clothes (with the built in morphs in those clothes) then I would be interested. - if it is new wardarobe time then I would have to think very long and hard.
