Poser - OFFICIAL F.A.Q (Last Updated: 2025 Jan 11 12:18 am)
Yes....with a word of caution. Make sure you have .pngs before deleting, and limit the deleting to your runtime files (character, camera, lights, pose, props, hair, etc.). I typically do not delete .rsr files in the geometries folder and "never" in the main poser folder! The .rsr files are not needed by P5 once the .pngs have been created and they take up a hell of a lot of room! :) I get rid of mine regularly and adore those merchants that send create their products with the .pngs included! :) You'd be surprised how many megabytes of space you can free up by getting rid of them!
Thank you, I understand, and it confirms what I thought after reading so many "readmes" about RSR. And, yes, I do have a good notion of how many Mb I can clear by doing that! ;o) France

You can safely delete any rsr files in your Geometries folder too. Poser 5 doesn't use those either.

You know, I knew P5 didn't need the .rsr files, but it never occured to me to delete them! D'oh!
Steve: as far as I know, PP does need the rsr files. You could probably delete any .png's you might have, though. Ajax? What say you? ;-)

I don't have PP, but I'm pretty sure it doesn't use either set of rsrs either. The rsrs in the geometries folders are the big ones and you can always delete those no matter which version of poser you have. It's just that P4 will make them again the next time you use that figure.

OK, a little hand holding for the Nervious Nelly here - One nmore time; are you sure I can safely delete the rsr files in my P5 Geometries folder? (I had a bad experience in PPP stupidly deleting the ones in the runtime before making sure the png files had been generated - hundreds of "shrugging guys" litter my runtime to this day.)
Intel Core I7 3090K 4.5 GhZ (overclocked) 12-meg cache CPU, 32 Gig DDR3 memory, GeoForce GTX680 2gig 256 Bit PCI Express 3.0 graphic card, 3 Western Difgital 7200 rpm 1 Tb SATA Hard Drives
If I understood correctly, you have to wait until you have a PNG before deleting the RSR. It seems Poser5 converts rsr to png when you load the figure. France

poser.rsr is part of the program. Leave that one alone. The ones in the geometries folders are versions of the obj files in a format that Poser 4 and below reads faster. The first time P4 accesses the obj, it builds an rsr so that next time it can open the figure/prop faster. If you delete the rsr, it just creates a new one next time it has to access that obj. PP and P5 just use the obj directly. You can safely delte the rsr files in the geometries folders no matter which version of Poser you have, but P5 doesn't use them at all so they're a total waste of space that should be deleted if you only use P5. If you have P5 set up to access a P4 runtime, you might want to leave them there for P4 to use, but you won't cause any problems by deleting them. The rsr files in the libraries are thumbnail pictures. The first time you view the contents of a library folder in Poser, P5 will create png thumbs based on those rsr thumbs. AFTER that you can safely delete them.

Hmm will p3do explorer convert all your rsr files to pings? That might be a simple solution.. run that, and when it's done just delete all the rsr files. If reading this thread is correct, all rsr files can be then deleted safely for P5 users..

Just some info - the poser.rsr file is where the program stores all the changes you make to the interface. You don't want to delete that one. In fact, I find it helpful to make a duplicate of that file when I first install Poser and store it somewhere else on my hard drive for safekeeping. This file gets corrupted sometimes and when it does I just replace it with the copy I made at the beginning. That does reset all the interface stuff to factory default, but what the heck, it's quicker than reinstalling the whole thing from scratch. Kate
I've had good luck with CRPro, but if you're using full path referencing (like I do because I store all but the main runtime and all textures on a drive other than the one Poser is installed on), use caution in letting it make changes to your geometry files. Howard's working on a fix for this. If you use full path, IM me and I can give you the details. This does not affect those using relative path. I use P5 too Gareee and don't recall any problems with the free version of the product. What have you run into?
I don;t recall the exact problems anymore, but do remember once I ran a test, there were a number of things that would no longer load at all. I found more problems hunting for textures n such, and after loosing something I was working on, I gave up on it completely.

Ockham has made a python script that checks for existing pngs and then delete all the unneeded rsr's :) Great little script. As it has been said, do NOT delete POSER.RSR! In fact it is a really good idea to write protect that file so that it doesn't get deleted, overwritten or otherwise corrupted. It is a vital part of the Poser program. But both PPP and P5 are happy without any other rsr's than that one :o) (of course after the necessary pngs has been created)

You just can't put the words "Poserites" and "happy" in the same sentence - didn't you know that? LaurieA
Using Poser since 2002. Currently at Version 11.1 - Win 10.

No it doesn't delete the Poser.rsr. It checks for a corresponding png, and only when that has been found it deletes the rsr. At least as far as I remember :o) It's called RSRWiper.FREEBIES! | My Gallery | My Store | My FB | Tumblr |

Full path starts with your drive letter. Eg, "C:Program Files......" Relative path starts at runtime. Eg ":Runtime:Textures:..."

Hello! In many "readme" that come with products, there is something about RSR being converted to PNG by Poser5. I've seen a few where it says "Don't delete the RSR file before Poser converts it to PNG"... Does that mean I could delete all the RSR I have in my Runtime folder after I have a png for them? Thanks.
