My initial guess would be: D|S is coming out of beta. Maybe. ;-)

I just read the announcement, which really isn't an announcement of anything other than the announcement that is to come. Anyway... it does sound BIG. Like, much bigger than just D|S coming out of beta. Big as in an acquisition of some sort that will change the face of the company! Or so they made it seem. Hehe. They left it open to pure speculation of course. So now my bet is that... they're being bought out by Shade. LOL. Shugs ;-P

I heard that they are going to market models of 'IT/Ginger' and whole virtual cities will be planned and built around the potential of that revolutionary idea! ;) Seriously, it sounds like something they think will have a big impact on the '3d scene' ...

DaveH02 ( ) posted Wed, 16 June 2004 at 8:27 PM

I initially thought they might bring Studio out as a finished product being the announcement, but - that is an internal project, so there are no agreements to prevent them from making any kind of announcement about that... Not to mention, there seems to be alot of work left to do with Studio. I am betting it is something more along the lines of merging with or buying out a studio or other software company.

wrpspeed ( ) posted Wed, 16 June 2004 at 8:39 PM

it only showed up in the platinum club section so far. mmmmm.

dlfurman ( ) posted Wed, 16 June 2004 at 8:40 PM

Dick Van Dyke (sp?) has just bought them out. Daz3D will be renamed to Petrie Studios (wait for it...wait for it again!) A toon clone of the new owner will be made available free to PC members. PS: Wait for it #1:Mr Van Dyke portrayed Rob Petrie in the 1st Dick Van Dyke show for 5 seasons. He (Van Dyke) has a love for 3D graphics. Daz has made a 3D Toonlike character of him. Alan Alda still has to wait. Wait for it #2. Daz3D spun out of Zygote. Zygotes, petrie dishes...get it? Oh well....

Huh?! When you have to explain a joke in that much detail, any comedy value it might have had is most certainly long gone....;-) (tee, hee, hee)

ChuckEvans ( ) posted Wed, 16 June 2004 at 9:35 PM

Maybe a merge with E-On...it would be really nice to have a program called "Vueser" with all the (best) attributes of both.

Tunesy ( ) posted Wed, 16 June 2004 at 9:40 PM

Why so much chatter about the daz plat club lately? Something new I've overlooked?

Veritas777 ( ) posted Wed, 16 June 2004 at 9:48 PM

...Aura from the Lightwave folks, and, or... what about... BILL GATES aquires DAZ! Maybe Gates see's virtual people as the next big software enhancement and so writes Dan Farr a check he can't refuse...

shadownet ( ) posted Wed, 16 June 2004 at 10:09 PM

Out of curiousity I ran a google search on DAZ announcement and got a number of interesting hits. One in particular set reeling, whatever it is up, I am fairly certain it is not Daz from devon. ROFLMHO

Chas ( ) posted Wed, 16 June 2004 at 10:28 PM

DAZ is going public. Everyone ready to buy stock? That's my gut feeling, anyway. And as someone who's worked a decade and a half for a shareholder-driven company, I can tell you that after the first year of euphoria and success wears off, you end up with a constant pressure to produce more profit and bottom line every year that ultimately obliterates everything else. Not good. :S Shareholders first, customers second. I wonder who's going to win that tug of war? :(

Actually the language used for the announcement is common to what is often pressed in advent of a merger to a larger parent organization. Not sure who that party would be but that is my guess. If I had to pick one on a dare, I'd say Adobe.

DCArt ( ) posted Wed, 16 June 2004 at 10:41 PM

If I had to pick one on a dare, I'd say Adobe. Mmmmm ... I think Newtek would be a better fit than Adobe.

Veritas777 ( ) posted Wed, 16 June 2004 at 11:18 PM

About two months ago DAZ and KOZ sat down in an out of the way Sushi Bar, just a block from a Tokyo green-line station, and after some really great Sushi and Green Tea (Mormon's don't drink), Koz whipped out his Sumitomo Ultra-Platinum Godzilla card and said that he always wanted a nice place to host his latest free hair models and would DAZ take $357 Million for the Utah based operation. Over the next two months the details have been finalized and the new company will be called "KOZ" Platinum Club members will have EXCLUSIVE free Koz Hair downloads as long as they remain PC members in good standing.

ynsaen ( ) posted Wed, 16 June 2004 at 11:32 PM

Given known information that's been bandied about for some time, Newtek is definitely a more likely merger element. Adobe's movement into 3D isn't within the current op plan -- they have two other targets right now (meaning it's not out of the question, just unlikely). Well, based on their current shareholder's statements, that is.

Deeecey Post #15. eeek! okay time to start planning on the Maya purchase, eeekkk Alias is looking for a new owner!!! OH GEWD NO, PLEASE PLEASE NO not Daz Maya, not Daztek! my 2 cents is on a partnership with Warner Bros for Licencing of characters, all started by the Pixie and the talks rolled from their.... anybody notice that the Pixie is gone from the Daz store to get "bundled" and hasn't returned.... that's my guess.

The mind BOGGLES with possibilities- A Curious Daz merger? DAZ buys out RDNA? DAZ buys out Renderosity (is THIS the reason for the store make-over?) Will we have "What's NEW!" link to DAZ PC items? Will DAZ have licenses for Daffy Duck, Woody Woodpecker, Minnie Mouse, and BEST OF ALL-- Yosemite Sam!???

DAZ is going public. Everyone ready to buy stock? Actually that was my first thought also. Do you think they'll sell it for $1.99/share in the PC? ;-)

ShadowWind ( ) posted Thu, 17 June 2004 at 12:37 AM

Since it's only being hyped in the Platinum Club and not Daz as a whole, I think the being bought out or going public is very unlikely. My guess is probably something along the lines of them getting several new producers on board or that they have purchased the resources of another 3D reseller for products in the platinum club. That's my take on it, but I could be wrong...

ShadowWind ( ) posted Thu, 17 June 2004 at 12:39 AM

Actually, the licensing agreements from movie companies sound equally as likely to me...

wrpspeed ( ) posted Thu, 17 June 2004 at 12:53 AM

Daz is becoming a total subscription service (similar to poserworld)

hauksdottir ( ) posted Thu, 17 June 2004 at 1:25 AM

The statement that they are "leveraging their assets" usually means that something they own is being sold to someone else. That "something" could be the entire company, could be their catalog of merchandise, could be that web-art-snagging site, or could be the as-yet-unfinished DAZ|Studio. I doubt if Newtek will buy them outright... what use would they have in a rendering application when they already own Lightwave? Being bought by a game company, OTOH, could be mutually beneficial (but I have a hard time visualizing the merger of such disparate corporate cultures). DAZ has been present at the last 4 Game Developer Conferences, and is interested in that market segment. Leveraging assets can also mean a merger with shares of the non-public company given up for shares of the public company. This can save all sorts of filing fees and legal hassles. Carolly

Mercytoo ( ) posted Thu, 17 June 2004 at 1:28 AM

Judith, lol... $1.99 a share isn't so bad ;-) Actually, going public was my first thought too. But, after letting my more business-savy hubby read the email, he's got me convinced they've bought someone/something.

Guess we'll have to wait & see what happens. Think the announcement will be as good as the hype?

DCArt ( ) posted Thu, 17 June 2004 at 1:40 AM · edited Thu, 17 June 2004 at 1:41 AM

The hype is always bigger ... LOL (EDIT: Meaning to say that the speculation is always more fun to read ;-) )

Studio will be out of beta soon (see announcements at Daz)so that can't be it as they advertize it already. My guess is they bought Barbie and Ken.

I have tried prudent planning long enough. From now I'll be mad. (Rumi)

jjsemp ( ) posted Thu, 17 June 2004 at 4:28 AM

I'll guess that Newtek has bought Daz. There's something a bit "sheepish" about the announcement, as though they already are anticipating that a lot of folks are going to be upset, and they want to assure everybody that everything's going to be okay (even though it may not). That sounds like an acquisition to me. And I think Newtek is a likely company to acquire them. -jjsemp

stewer ( ) posted Thu, 17 June 2004 at 5:17 AM

If it's an "Important Message for Platinum Club Members" (emphasis mine), it's probably nothing that I should be interested in, right?

Farside ( ) posted Thu, 17 June 2004 at 5:25 AM

The big announcement... "Daz is proud to present clothing for a character not named Vicky!!!" Now that would be a major (and quite shocking 'cause it's so rare) announcement.

Actually if this is a buyout, it wouldn't surprise me at all is it was Sony buying the operation. Or at least buying out DAZ Studio. :] Fish

BekaVal ( ) posted Thu, 17 June 2004 at 6:23 AM

BM Thought exactly what you wrote, Veritas777, when I got the announcement of an announcement, except it was green tea with caffeine. Or maybe - they will support P5 from now on...?

maxxxmodelz ( ) posted Thu, 17 June 2004 at 6:28 AM

" Actually if this is a buyout, it wouldn't surprise me at all is it was Sony buying the operation. Or at least buying out DAZ Studio." Really? Cause that would shock the SH*T out of me! ;-P I think it's probably a Newtek acquisition (meaning, Newtek is buying DAZ). But if DAZ is seriously interested in the game market, they would have been better off getting bought out by Discreet instead. ;-)

It's being hyped in the PC now, but it's going to affect everyone. "The biggest thing since DAZ spun off from Zygote"? It's got to be a merger, acquisition, or buyout. I think Tyger over at DAZ had it right - Dan Farr was just so excited about whatever it is he's done that he had to tell someone. But the NDA means he can't. So telling just the PC that he'd have something important to tell us later was a compromise.

I think Carolly's analysis is spot-on. The language they used isn't the kind you'd hear if this was just about GIRL or DAZ Studio. It's typical corporate-speak for a buyout or sellout.

Silke ( ) posted Thu, 17 June 2004 at 7:01 AM

To the one who said Daz buying RDNA -- please don't scare me like that. I'm fragile. Now if RDNA suddenly bought DAZ... I'd be rejoicing. It would mean I might get P5 support lol.

If we're playing theoretical conspiracy theories, the one above where the sick idea of Adobe purchasing Poser is just, well, wrong. It would definately be the death of the program. I've got two program from Adobe that don't do what they are advertised as doing and Adobe won't answer either email or telephone calls for assistance and support. Please, let it be someone who understands what the term "service industry" actually means.

"I've got two program from Adobe that don't do what they are advertised as doing and Adobe won't answer either email or telephone calls for assistance and support." No kidding? What programs are they? Maybe someone here can help if it's just a simple fix. I have Photoshop of course and Adobe Premiere, both of which operate rock solid for me.

The programs are Contribute and Contribute 2. I talked the department into purchasing several copies for faculty installation and once they were used they locked the user out of their files and set the code so that it couldn't be fetched or repaired. Now they want us to purchase the newest version as well as a new, incredibly expenseive program called Breeze. And they promise the same high level of assistance and support that we've reveived in the past. It's going to take months to repair the damage that Contribute did.
