Hi there, First let me say that I think that poser is a very well designed program. With that being said, I would like to ask this question, how do I create new characters using the characters that already came with poser?......For example....lets say I wanted to use the body of a human with a head of a lion. Feet of a goat and wings of a bird with a wonderful texture to match with....(I know it sounds wierd, but if anyone can help me with this, I'll put it up for download in the free-stuff section) How would I go about doing this and have the character work as though it was a regular figure?.....Without having to hide the figure body parts and such.... I hope I didn't make the question to confusing or difficult to understand......Peace....and oh yeah...here's a little pic for your viewing pleasure....enjoy!!.....over and out.....

I am not a frequent user of Poser, but I think I saw something in the user manual about that.

Mehndi ( ) posted Thu, 19 October 2000 at 7:52 AM

There is several whole chapters on this in the manual, chapter 13-15, it starts on page 272. Do you have your manuel? Otherwise, there are a few tutorials here and there on the subject, and the 3rd party book The Poser Handbook, and I think Thorne has something at his site on how to make a figure of a teddy bear, which teaches the basics too. That would be www.thorneworks.com.

binder ( ) posted Thu, 19 October 2000 at 12:38 PM

Thank you guys for all of your responses......About having the manual....well I don't......I got this program off the web, so I don't have the manual for it.....I'll go check out the tutorials you guys menioned here.....and see what I get from it.....again I am very thankful for the advise given......PeAcE.....

You can buy the Poser Handbook at bookstores :) or on www.amazon.com :) Amazon is lovely, and they accept checkcards, not just credit cards :) Soon as you can do so though, please plan to purchase the real program. I know this might require you to save a while to do so, but once you see how great this program is, you will want to pay the coders who work so hard to create it :)

binder ( ) posted Thu, 19 October 2000 at 6:44 PM

alrighty.....It will be very hard for me to buy poser.....but I believe I wouldn't have to.....I mean I am fully aware of the program capabiliy....and I'm sure I'll find what I need to know somewhere on the web....in fact....I thank "bloodsong" for his suggestion on checking out the lessons they have in the tutorial section.....I think I found a good tutorial that explains the basics of the process....so to all, I thank you very much for the help.....now I know where to turn when I need aid (quickly)

I think the point would be that if you purchase the program you will be more likely to get the help you so much appreciate the next time. The turn of phrase '..I got this program off the web, so I don't have the manual for it...' put you on a short list for a lot of people. '...but I believe I wouldn't have to...' gets you an asterisk for "Didn't even show remorse". Have yourself a good day today and a better day tomorrow.

lmacken ( ) posted Thu, 19 October 2000 at 8:43 PM

...and your art sucks too. What is that?

burn2619 ( ) posted Thu, 19 October 2000 at 9:36 PM

Ok So I don't agree with the way the program was gotten but I do have to say that was quite rude Imacken! Art is in the eye of the beholder. Some people have views that go far beyond the understanding of yours I guess. I mean could you draw free hand ? better than me ? who knows ? I wouldn't think so because my art and your art could differ in ways or forms. I respect all artist and their prespective of art nomatter what it may include.I have been an artist all my life and have never seen a sucky peice of art prob one that could use improvements for my tastes but never bad art thats whats so good about art it's a diff thing for everyone. Again I'm on no high horse or flaming anyone just stating that we should be here to help each other and not tell theem their art sucks! Also I do say you should run out and get the real deal I have had mine a very short time and love it !!!!

binder ( ) posted Thu, 19 October 2000 at 10:51 PM

Well Imacken......It's very clear that you're upset of something I said....which by the way.....wasn't meant to come across as being rude or showing lack of remorse....I was simply explaining my situation.....but being that I don't have that "perfect eye" you seem to have for art and it's contents.....that there's really no reason for me to address you on your remark any further....I mean you have that right to say whatever you want....and all I wanted was help....which however you failed to apply.....but anyway....PeaCe...

OK, I regret that one word (I'm sorry), but mainly because it allows you to ignore the point in my first response.

binder ( ) posted Fri, 20 October 2000 at 6:31 PM

Here's another question for you guys......is it possible to create a bum map and a transparent map in one file that can be used in bryce?.....is there some kind of file format I'm suppose to follow?....or perhaps something that involves the alpha channels?.....please.....I need some help.... LaTer....

Bryce, too?

Mehndi ( ) posted Sat, 21 October 2000 at 2:22 PM

I do not have Bryce, so I do not know. I NEED Bryce actually, since there are some models in Bryce format out there on the web I would like to export for use in Poser, or at least give a try to export. However.... I will not go search the net to find a place to steal or "borrow" or whatever a crack of it from. I think what Lmacken was attempting to tell you, though he did it very poorly perhaps in the heat of the moment, was that most of us here sweated blood and tears to pay for our software, and this is one of the places one finds on the net that almost brags about our sacrifices to afford to be honest and law abiding :) So it just sat wrong with him, and even indeed with me, when you seemed to flaut a second time that you had not purchased but instead had a cracked copy of the program. I mean, if you had answered my suggestion with "I know, and I am saving right now, and plan to get it in 3 months time when I can afford to do so"... most here would find it in their heart to show you compassion (we know how it is to be low on funds) and tender to you all the help you need, and keep encouraging you to save save save, be one of us really, etc. I guess though, your response that now that you had the program for free in a crack, and now have us too, you are off scot free, no need to pay anyone for anything, whether it be curiouslabs for their work, or even the Poser Handbook author by going and buying his book, or anything... it does tend to leave one a bit less helpful feeling toward you.

binder ( ) posted Sat, 21 October 2000 at 5:48 PM

You know what Mehndi....I fully understand everything you have said....and I'm very sorry for any trouble I've caused you or anyone else....I didn't come on here to brag or to put you guys down for paying for the program.....that wasn't my intension at all...(you have to believe me)....I love art and also the people that exercises it.....I thought by letting you guys know why I didn't have the manual, would make everyone understand my situation and why I needed help....instead, it's become a dog fight between allies./...I can't afford poser...(not at the moment) but I still wanted to have the experience./....I'm sure their are many others right here in this community that did the same thing I did....(it seems like I'm the only one that admitted it though)./....I'm sorry and I'll be much more careful in what I say and how I say it.....PeaCe....

I do not hold it against you Binder at all. Once, long ago, when I was just starting out as a literally starving artist, I borrowed software to learn on, but always told myself firmly and severely that it was only so I could learn, and get work, so I could pay for it really. In the end, I did pay for it, and so did not let myself down and feel badly inside :) I am certain that in time, when your circumstances permit it, you will want to pay for the software too :)

And by the way, I happen to LIKE the picture of yours above :) I think it shows alot of basic skills and native talent.

binder ( ) posted Sat, 21 October 2000 at 11:33 PM

To tell you the truth Mehndi.....I do plan on paying for it.....but with school and all I just don't see how I could do that right now.....and like I said before....I just didn't want to be left behind.....that's all.... Well I guess that's that....so I'll see you around (hopefully)....and oh yeah....thanks for your kind words about my pic....being that I'm now starting out with this "digital art" business, that comment really helps....PeaCe....

Binder: I was kind of dreading coming back to the thread, but I see now that you've turned the corner. Not least of all because of the nature of the response you deleted fromn this thread. =) Thanks, Mehndi, I think a second data-point helped. I'll apologize for that word again. The 'What is that?' part was about the lighting. I don't mind saying that I started with someone pressing an 'evaluation copy' of Poser into my hands, and my reaction was the same as anyone else's. I chose not to post in the forums (this was back before the PFO?R-osity split) until I had purchased a copy, although I lurked and I suspect I downloaded from free stuff. I don't recall if I learned that from the forum(s) or found myself among like-minded people once I got (t)here.

binder ( ) posted Sun, 22 October 2000 at 12:26 PM

Imacken....I was starting to wonder when you would return....and I deleted the response because it was meant only for you./....To me.....it seemed like you enjoy giving other people hell....and I thought that I was one of your newest victims./..I deal with people like that all the time...so really this wasn't any different :-)....but for real....you can't really blame me for thinking that way....so far you havn't offered any asistants what so ever relating to the question..(that was suppose to be at hand)....instead you seem more concerned about where I received the program.....and then that little gesture about "bryce, too?" really did it....there was no need to carry that set-back any longer./...but now I hope that's behind us and we can carry on with our lives as we did before.....you guys take care....and I have nothing but love for all you artists out there......PeaCe.....

P.S. (about the lightin)....I thought it would be clear that the image above is some kind of lab gone all wrong....I figured that if I used dark lighting, it would tell the story all by itself.....LatEr.....

The lighting is where I see the native talent. You have managed to capture suspense and dread in your choice of lighting. It can improve in time with careful placement, tiny spots illuminating certain key areas, but overly all, when I look at the picture I know something is not right here, it gives me the creeps. That is a good thing :) There are artists in the large production houses who do NOTHING except lighting, as this is a speciality area. One of the hardest areas to get really great at, lighting that evokes emotion.

binder ( ) posted Sun, 22 October 2000 at 4:41 PM

I thank you again Mehndi.....and I do hope I get better with not only the lightin, but with everything else as well.....by the way.....you said that you didn't have bryce....but do you have poser?.....and if you do....would you be able to help me with the question I asked that's all the way at the top of this page?....PeaCe.....

I do have poser, but I am afraid mixing and matching body parts is beyond my skill level too. There are some who have accomplished this, and the best place to get advice in this area, and alot less spam and erm... discord, is in Character Creators forum :) One can learn alot in there. Read backwards in time, there are discussions on many aspects of cobbling together handmade custom characters, and post your questions there too.

Okay Mehndi....I will...thanks.....I'll see you around....and thank you for understanding my position....PeaCe.....
