Subject: Poser 5 and a Wacom Tablet

MeInOhio ( ) posted Thu, 01 July 2004 at 7:26 PM ยท edited Mon, 23 February 2026 at 9:07 AM

Anybody run Poser 5 on WindowsXP that I also has a wacom tablet installed? I don't use the tablet in Poser. I prefer the mouse, but lately I've noticed that after I run Poser and do a render, that afterwards, my tablet no longer responds. I mean, the tablet knows the pen is over the tablet because the light turns green, but the cursor no longer moves on the screen. I tried unplugging the tablet and plugging it back in (It's a USB device), but that didn't work. Only way I can get it to work is to reboot. It happened the other day too. But that was after I ran Cararra and rendered. Not sure if I ran poser that day too. Never noticed this before. But there are days that I never use the table. Just depends on the program I'm running.

I do but I don't use it in Poser. Usually after a render I open the image in photoshop for postwork and never have any trouble with using my wacom. Sometimes if it's been inactive for a while it takes a couple of passes of the pen over the tablet but thats all. P5, XP Home and Wacom Intuos 2

Sounds like weak batteries in the pen to me.

MeInOhio ( ) posted Thu, 01 July 2004 at 10:45 PM

Maybe I'm wrong, but I don't think this one has batteries. I did see there were some new drivers that came out last December. New than what I had. So I downloaded them. Maybe they will help. I was having some problems with blue screens after I installed the lastest version of ZoneAlarm. I finally had to uninstall it and got back to an earlier version. Maybe that somehow did something. Well, here's hoping that the new driver's will fix it. And I'll try to find out for sure, but I swear this pen is suppose to be battery-less. thanks for the response.

I'm willing to bet your pen has no battery if it has a "cord." If it does not have a cord, then it has a battery. There has to be some way for the pen to help generate its signal.

Also, from my own experience, the best thing is to avoid ZoneAlarm. I uninstalled ZoneAlarm once due the stupidity in the way it worked (it thought my ISP's email server was an evil invader!). ZoneAlarm threw a hissy-fit and cut off my Internet access entirely. I had to use Norton Utilities to clean up my registry and give me back the internet.

Win XP Pro, P5, Wacom Graphire 3,(2003 driver version 4.76-8), system refused to recognize the pad after installing the latest drivers.

Wacom has no cord or batteries, all electricity lives in the pad, the pen disrupts the flow in the grid which steers the cursor.

ZoneAlarm is very well aware that their latest release is instable on a lot of systems (atleast support admitted that to me in an E-mail), their advice, install version the old version and hold your breath till the next version arrives. My advice is don't buy an extended subscription (updates & support) because ZoneAlarm does not deliver what you pay for.

I never thought about batteries in my pen before it suddenly stopped responding. I looked at it and saw no obvious way of taking it apart, so at first I didn't think there were any batteries in it either. Then, finally I tried to violently jerk it apart L and lo and behold, one AAA bettery sat inside. :o) Granted, this was a Genius and not a Wacom, but I'm with Ron/Bobbie in this one: If there isn't a battery, there's gotta be a cord. It doesn't work by magic :o)

At least my Wacom pen and mouse have no batteries - it is specifically mentioned. They generate their signals through induction most probably. Both are cordless. The tablet itself has a cord to a USB port. USB provides the needed current for the tablet to operate. I have Wacom Graphire Studio XL. For sceptics ... it is easy enough to verify that most Wacom models no longer use batteries - www.wacom.com or a visit to a local store carrying these. Btw: it would be kinda odd to assume battery failure only after Poser use anyway...

Um...think about it this way; the tablet on your laptop runs off you. You don't have a cord, or batteries. Every now and then while I'm working on textures I forget and try to move the Poser camera with the stylus. Much whirling confusion ensues.

If I recall correctly, Wacoms don't have batteries in the pen, all other tablets have. Wacom has the patent on this.

12 rounds is right, wacoms using the principe of generating power for the pen with induction.

I use Poser and Carrara with Win XP and an Wacom intuos tablet. No such problem.

MeInOhio ( ) posted Fri, 02 July 2004 at 5:20 AM

Thanks. Just to clarify...I wasn't using the tablet with Poser. It was just afterwards that I wanted to use it with Painter 8 and the cursor wouldn't move...until I rebooted. And I gave it more than enough time to respond. I moved it around alot several times. And I noticed that the light would turn green whenever the pen was on the pad. Hopefully it was just a driver problem and it'll be okay.

"Anybody run Poser 5 on WindowsXP that I also has a wacom tablet installed?" I do and I use the tablet in Poser 4/PP and Poser 5. I've never had any trouble. But I have an old serial model. The pen is wireless and there is no battery.

I use Poser, Zone Alarm, and a Wacom tablet. They all seem to play nicely together.

I have noticed that sometimes, when you switch between mouse and pen (I use a separate, wireless Logitech mouse, not the one that comes with the tablet), the tablet doesn't recognize that you've switched. First, make sure the Wacom mouse is well clear of the tablet; it won't recognize the pen if it detects the mouse. If it still won't detect the pen, run the Wacom mouse over the tablet a few times until the cursor appears, then remove the mouse and try the pen. That always works for me.

I use my wacom mouse in poser 5 and after with no problems (intuos usb) However there have been documented problems using P5 and Zone Alarm which might be conflicting with the wacom drivers. disable/uninstall zone alarm then try it to see if that is the problem

Well, I rendered today in Poser and then tried the tablet and it worked fine, so maybe the re-install of the drivers fixed it. Thanks.

Freezing cursor of the tablet is easily fixed by removing the tablet cord from USB, waiting a second and reinserting the tablet cord. This effectively reloads the drivers. I have experienced two errors (one froze the cursor and other that started to think the pen and tablet as mouse) and both got fixed by the above-mentioned trick. Of course that only works with USB ...
