Subject: A couple of questions on Terrains & Clouds

1) How do you create a terrain without the square base? I'm trying to make a floating Island, and I don't want it to be a symmetrical lattice. 2) How do you create realistic high altitude scenes? I'm trying to create a world inside a gas giant, whereby you can't see the ground below, only clouds. Clouds above and billowy clouds all around. I created the above scene with a symmetrical lattice. It looks too uniform, top and bottom. Not natural at all (yeah, OK, I know a floating Island is not natural, hold the sarcasm). Secondlly, I removed the ground plain and replaced it with a cloud plane. But, it looks like its over and ocean. The centre of my world is a hazy orange. Finally, as you can see there are now billowy clouds. I'd love to add some for drama and scale. Novice Brycer eagerly awaiting advice from my masters. :-)

Hmmmmm, i do not think you can create any other terrain than a square based, cuz that is how is defined, on the square grid ! :) You can apply transparency map to it to and loose the square shape on the bottom... Latices are simetrical in nature, so U cannot loose that part, but U can edit it in terrain editor and randomize it more ! :) Volumetric slabs are more convincing if you want more realistic clouds but their render time is much more demanding... Hope this helped some ! :)

You can use the clipping bracket to cut off the edges of a terrain. See the attached image. Click on the little icons up top of the terrain editor, and you'll get the clipping bracket, and be able to change the terrain to Solid. Click where the arrow shows, not out on the thin lines. drag up until the red swallows up the area that you don't want.

Excellent, excellent (he says wringing his hands), the world is within my grasp! (maniacal laughter...) Any ideas on my second query? (he asks humbly).

Another thing you could try is to make your top terrain positive, then create another terrain (or duplicate the first one) and mess with the shape a bit - flatten it down on the Y axis, stretch it etc., and place a different material on it. Then make it negative, move it up to cover part of the top terrain, and group them. You make objects positive or negative by selecting the object, then clicking on the A beside the object to open the Attributes tab.

The Billowy clouds you can make from Volumetric Clouds or Many Sphere's with the Volumetric Cloud Textures Applied...I use My own Clouds I have for sale here and I Put them as a Backdrop/2D Square and Render that way...There is a Thunderhead Cloud Formation in the Freebie area under Bryce here on Renderosity...

hOkay....why not put another ground plane underneath the first one, and put the material you want on that? Not a great colour in the attached image, just a quick render, you'd need to experiment a bit to get the right effect.

Here's my attempt at a very similar idea about four years ago. I did basically what pogmahone suggested to you. Two terrains, one turned upside down (turn 180 degrees on the x or z axis) and added lots of spikes in the lower terrain and lots of streching and squeezing until I got proportions I liked. I cheated by placing a disk between the two terrains to avoid the problem of matching the two profiles and blending the different material along the seam. One other thing. I placed the camera inside a glass sphere to get the flat ground plane to curve along the horizon line. There was a tutorial on this but I forget where and by who - it was four years ago and memory is the second thing to go... (Don't laught guys, everyone did bubble and glass sphere pictures when they first got Bryce)

(cackles at Guslaw!) Yours turned out much better than mine, my friend...!

oooohhhhhh....guslaw! The dripping lower terrain is a great idea. And placing the camera in a glass sphere. That looks really great!!

"Reinstall Windows" is NOT a troubleshooting step.

Intersect is quite good fun to play with as well (you make one terrain positive, set the other to Intersect) Would you believe that I'm meant to be getting ready to travel to UK for a week - I've to leave for the boat in an hour, and need to pack, have my breakfast, and walk the dog before that :o(( Instead I'm playing with Bryce

bandolin ( ) posted Wed, 08 September 2004 at 7:28 AM

All wonderful suggestions. My brain is steaming as is my CPU. UK by boat? That would take my 3 weeks from where I live ;-)

One of what? A website? Are you talking about a specific image on this site? Sorry I'm confused.

Ok, hold on. I saw an image in your Gallery Bryster; the Sky Cities one. Is that what your're talking about. Because that's what I'm in the process of doing. However, mine is more medieval in nature. I've been to Whales. Love the castles. Crossed over at the Severn? crossing (hope I got the name right). At the time they were charging 10 (Ouch!). Got lost on some road through sheep country with a bunch of dams. Saw one person only, and he looked at us as if he'd never seen a car before. Stayed at a B&B near Harlech castle. They had the most spectacular view of the Ocean. Loved to go back with the whole family.

Wales. Now that gives me an idea for the "mystery" challenge: that ruined abbey, not all that far from the Severn Bridge. Not "Tintagel" (that's in Cornwall), Tintern?? (need correct name to do google search). Been there a couple of times, years ago, the place is not only mysterious, it's kind of creepy too. Dunno if I'll have time to do it tho:-(( Cheers, Diolma
