Subject: Vue 4 at $69! - A Nice Complement for Bryce

petshoo ( ) posted Thu, 11 November 2004 at 8:07 AM · edited Wed, 25 December 2024 at 9:27 AM

Hey guys!

Don't know if anybody noticed, but e-on is running a special offer on Vue 4 dowload at $69! Imho, that's a no-brainer. I use both Bryce and Vue, and would really recommend that you go beyond the "standard loathing" and give it a try ;-) You'll be amazed at how well it complements Bryce. Sure, the interface is different from Bryce, but you get used to it very rapidly. It's actually quite nice and efficient once you get used to it.

I've heard a lot about Vue, but what are the benifits of using it either over Bryce or with Bryce?

pakled ( ) posted Thu, 11 November 2004 at 9:23 AM

I don't loath it..but I'm wondering how long it will be until it shows up as a magazine 'freebie'..;) taking the long view..;)

Its a nice price, but from what ive read in the Vue forum, its Vue4 Lite. It doesnt come with all the content of the boxed version. Im curious of whats missing. Plus, if i would to buy any software, i want a boxed one, with a printed manual instead of a PDF file. :)

enh...I've played with vue 4 and found it too limiting. I might pick it up when it ends on a magazine...as Bryce 4 just did.

Look at this nice comment found on their product page: "Vue d'Esprit is essentially an advanced version of Bryce" - millimeter magazine - April 2003 Drac, OPEN FIRE ON THIS BAST***S!!!!! :D

blaufeld ( ) posted Thu, 11 November 2004 at 12:43 PM

BTW, the 69$ edition is the complete prog but without objects or ready scenes - for that, you must pay another 29.99$...

pakled ( ) posted Thu, 11 November 2004 at 12:55 PM

..a nominal fee..;) Objects I can do in Wings..;) hmm..if it stays until Christmas, maybe the better half can..;)

Their entire web page has comments here and there on how much Bryce sucks, and how superior Vue is in comparison. I understand that they want to sell software, but personally, comments like that pisses me off. If they say Bryce suck, that means they say my work do as well. Not a very clever way to attract Bryce users by insulting them. :)

I'm not sure how Vue complements Bryce (I now own Vue 5 btw). That implies that they can be used together. They really can't. I will continue to use Bryce for some images, but will use Vue 5 for things like HDRI.

petshoo ( ) posted Thu, 11 November 2004 at 2:36 PM

Well, both Vue and Bryce have a definite "style" to their renders. I find Vue has a nice "painterly" look that is hard to achieve in Bryce, and which I find fits well certain projects - but not all. I like the Vue vegetation a lot too. Which is why I'm the happy user of both products. Rochr, guys. I would never summarize my work to the tool I use. I try and get the tool that works best for a given job. I never really noticed those comments about how much Bryce "sucks", though I did spot the Millimeter magazine quote. Should you flame e-on for quoting Millimeter mag? Anyway, everybody does that, and I wouldn't disregard a product because of something like that. BTW, I'm not saying any of you must get Vue. If you're so completely showered by Bryce that you never want to look at anything else, please ignore my post. I'm just saying it's a nice opportunity for those like me who are always happy to add a new paintbrush to their toolkit. And let's face it, Vue is really a very cool proggie.

Rochr ( ) posted Thu, 11 November 2004 at 3:41 PM

True, No one is saying Vue is something bad. It has ups and downs, as well as Bryce. Personally i find the UI and tools unintuitive, but Vue can obviously achieve great results in the right hands. As for the comments, they dont exactly say the word "suck", but when browsing through E-ons pages, youll constantly run into comparisons between Vue and Bryce. Advertising a product is one thing, advertising a product by constantly putting down a competetors product, is in my book, very low.

Shrug...when I got a change try vue 4 a few years ago I found that the materials were not as in depth and that object placement was really weird. I like making landscape images and I could not seem to move terrians whereever I wanted. Vue 4 has great outside lighting with little effort but I can achieve the same effect in bryce and its second nature now. If it shows up on a mag I'll snag it but I want HDRI for some poser renders so I'm getting Shade(cause I want to model too), even with P5 I can get good results But for landscapes I'll stick to bryce. I like the effort it takes sometimes. Challenges bring out the best in people. But I haven't seen a vue render for a long time that wasn't imported poser stuff.... I asked at daz if we could get a vue 5 sample of a b5, p5 and vue5 rendering the same poser object under 1 light. Vue 5 I might like to give a try but I've not seen any good comparisons.

If they're offering it for that price, I may as well just hang on to mine. Tried it a couple times, installed, uninstalled. Never Regged, still like New in the box. I'm with Rochr, Nice little piece of software, just a little southpaw for a righty. Badgering another is like Americas TV politics. Open Animosity is only fear you're not as good as the other guy.

ok, Vue is a wonderful programm, no question, and you can do really breathtaking images with it. But you can do it with Bryce as well and as long as both proggies are not really compatible with each other, I better spare my money for a good modeller (ZBrush is my latest favourite but 400 is hard stuff!).
But at the really moment you can import Vue trees and plants into Bryce, I'll buy it - and not a single day earlier!

I went back to the e-on site to check on all that "badgering" I was missing. Frankly, if it's "all over", then I must really be going blind! I'm personally very happy that I own both, and I thought others would be interested in getting Vue for such a nice price. But suit yourselves. Pete-

RodsArt ( ) posted Thu, 11 November 2004 at 6:36 PM

Before I start or rather finish this, I just want to say Vue is a great Program...just not my taste, and I did buy the Package even after owning Bryce for 2.5 years. After Reading what Rochr said I went & read Eons Site. I was trying to state this as nice as possible when I used the word "BADGERING". I don't agree with Poilticians Using Slander Style Tactics against their opponents just to TRY and make themselves look better, and It's just as childish when a professional Company resorts to the same measures. Now I understand that most of the Slams were from outside sources giving reviews, yet you don't have to post those if it's at the expense of sounding crude & rude. But "So What", What got me was the shear lack of investigating, & walking back in here and pointing a finger at me. Thank you for Sharing a nice price. Now it's my turn to share: Now is Your Chance to discover why Vue has become the Leading Landscape Application on the market! It's unbeatable at 3D scenery "In terms of sheer visual beauty, absolutely nothing beats Vue d'Esprit!" raved Computer Arts in its January 2000 review of Vue 3. Version 4 simply does it even better! Vue 4 is the ideal choice for the artist - hobbyist or professional - in search of quality 3D scenery. You'll soon find out why Vue d'Esprit has such a solid reputation of being the most easy to use and productive 3D scenery application around! "Vue d'Esprit 4 is an exceptional program [...] it will definitely give Bryce a run for it's money." The program is impressive, cheap, and by far the best tool in its class. It's time to forget Bryce; Vue d'Esprit is the new king of 3D-landscape renderers!" rendering effects and speed leave poor Bryce shivering behind!" Vue d'Esprit's exceptionally realistic vegetation has outshined Bryce's!" "Again, Vue is ahead of Bryce in terms of picture quality!" "Vue d'Esprit comes highly recommended and offers amazing value for money with dozens of features over Bryce at virtually half the cost!"

Notice how all those comments said best LANDSCAPE renderer when comparing Vue to Bryce. Nothing to be pissed about since a whole lot of this forum pushes Bryce way beyond its simple Landscape proggy roots. That is what most of the uniformed press think Bryce is. People have been pushing Bryce way beyond the realms of a landscape program since early Bryce1 - LOL - that is how far behind the times the press is. All of the cheap shots against Bryce mention that Vue is the best 3d Scenery renderer, etc. Again, no worries - Bryce in our hands is way beyond a simple scenery program. Don't take any of that crap from the Vue site personally Rochr. People just don't get that Bryce is not just a program - it is a state of mind. Bryce has soul. No other program can match it for that. No other program makes you want to prove the impossible the way Bryce does. No other program feels this right and makes you WANT to play the way Bryce does. No other program has launched as many happy artists into the deep end of 3d. When I want to play I fire up Bryce. When I need to work I fire up high-end apps, but in the end I would rather be playing with Bryce ; ) Don't let the uniformed masses get you down. We know what Bryce is - and that is what really matters. Scott (Bryce user and lover since 1994).

I really must learn to stop commenting on these Vue-threads. :) As ive said, its a nice app, with some good features and i might even get myself a copy to play with some day. I HAVE spoken to some nice people at E-on, i just dont like when a company uses comparisons (some which is half true), when marketing their app. Its not E-on specific, i wouldnt like if DAZ behaved the same way either. :)

Hehe... you just can't help yourself ; ) Yeah my main point is most of the things they key on is comparing them as landscape/scenery apps. In most of these categories Vue does excel. But its sort of a win/lose proposition. The volumetric atmospheres render 10x faster than Bryce, but the Vue terrains just look soft no matter how much you res them up. I also prefer the DTE to the materials in Vue. They really didn't compare themselves against the non-scenery app features of Bryce - where it does shine.

agiel ( ) posted Sun, 14 November 2004 at 6:15 PM

I was wondering why there was not much mention of Vue in the Bryce forum, now I can see why :) I don't particularly like the practice of claiming superiority over another software, if only because it feeds the idea that it is a good thing to take sides. It doesn't surprise me however from a Software Industry where everybody is the leader in something. To me Bryce and Vue are both tools. Period. Use them as you wish. Use both or chose one over the other if you are more comfortable with it. Claiming one is better than the other feels to me as odd as claiming Camel Hair brushes are better than Synthetic brushes (although I am sure I can find someone who would say that Camel Hair brushes are the best :)). They both serve a purpose. They both have advantages and limitations. They both can do wonder in the right hands :) But I guess it is something too deeply entrenched in people's nature that it is not avoidable. Right now, a lot of people are coming into the Vue forum to claim how superior Carrara is over Vue. You had a perfect example of elitism right here with CGTalk's stance about using Bryce for the Space Opera challenge. What really matters is what you can do with the tools you have. Everything else is secondary.

Vue 4 does better rendering for nature scenes than Bryce 5. Bryce 5 renders all other scenes better, though. I bought the Bryce 5 upgrade ($159) back when it included a content CD. Few have managed to make great Sci-Fi scenes with Vue 4. http://www.renderosity.com/gallery.ez?ByArtist=Yes&Artist=czarnyrobert has done great things with Vue 4.
