Subject: A Renderosity Feature Request

SWAMP ( ) posted Thu, 05 May 2005 at 8:17 AM · edited Wed, 25 December 2024 at 12:01 AM

Could the PTB, please (pretty please with sugar on top) look into getting an ignore feature programmed into Renderosity? We seem to have cultivated a few incredibly chatty members that twenty and thirty (plus) post to just one thread has become the norm for them. Im always interested to hear what anyones thoughts and ideas are on any given subject, but after a certain amount of post it just becomes endless OT rambling. I know other sites have this feature so that one member can choose to ignore another members post that may/usually upset them. I can imagine this does cut down on arguments and flame wars to some degree. That in itself is a good reason, but having the ability to filter out the repetitive background noise from already long threads would really benefit all the membership here. Thanks you for your consideration, SWAMP

Another suggestion that has been made before that I hope is being taken seriously is an "hide thread" feature. Some of the very long threads bury new threads that have only one or two postings. And, while I'm pushing my luck, could someone check the ebots? Sometimes I get notifications of threads I've never posted to, and or threads I've unchecked the notify box on a previous posting and just looked at in a subsequent visit. Looking at the thread doesn't mean I want to buried in ebots...especially on some of these "tag you're it" threads.

Thanks for the suggestions dialyn and SWAMP. I will pass these on. dialyn, I will get the programmer to look into your ebot problem. Thanks Stacey Community Manager

While we're at it, another feature request, this time for the MP. Merchants sometimes upload revised/updated versions of their products, and while some of them email purchasers to let them know, not all do. Could Rendo develop a system whereby when an updated product is made available, all previous purchasers get an ebot?

Thanks for considering this - I know it has been requested before!

Steve

Here's really pushing my luck. Also about the revised/updated version of products...I wish the date of the upgrade would show, with either the newest on top, or the ability to sort by date. Thanks for looking into it, Stacey! Appreciate your help.

dialyn: "And if I protest it, you will faithfully accuse me of not having a sense of humor." No, I would have never done that. I had no idea this was not an issue to be poked at. I was going for a giggle. Not to insult or belittle the proceedings. I apologize and I'll stay out of your way. kmw

A fine idea.

Of course, one can effectively do this already: just don't read the posts that one might find upsetting.

Personally, I've never used the "ignore" feature -- even on sites where it's available. If someone wishes to say something about me -- have at it. I'm not the type that's particularly bothered by being insulted. Or by having my thinking challenged.

I know other sites have this feature so that one member can choose to ignore another members post that may/usually upset them.

As I've already said in another thread: ignorance is bliss.

We seem to have cultivated a few incredibly chatty members that twenty and thirty (plus) post to just one thread has become the norm for them.

You know......the very concept of "debate" involves an exchange of ideas. Give and take. Not just "make a single statement, and then go away".

shrug

If the administration chooses to make such a rule, then that's fine with me.

But I find it odd that we've got people complaining bitterly about their not having any free speech rights on the one hand: and then complaining bitterly about fellow forumites exercising their free speech rights on the other.

PS -- if my thoughts bother you, or make you uncomfortable -- then please ignore this post.

PPS -- the result is much like listening to one side of a phone conversation. But that's OK -- if the entire conversation might be upsetting to listen to.

Some people have sensitive natures, and shouldn't be playing this game in the first place.

I'd like to see an ignore feature as well. For me, it's not about free speech or debate but posting inane comments that have nothing whatsoever to do with the topic until the dang thing is completely taken over and derailed with them. I'm not sensitive but when I start reading a thread because I am interested in it and it gets thrown totally OT by endless hamster comments or get the popcorn and beer, it becomes aggravating.

I have a suspicion that the "ignore" function won't work with this forum software. Just some kind of intuition, no hard facts, but a feeling that it can't be implemented in a way that is completely functional for all users.

Third post in this thread.

Have I exceeded my speech quota?

Better IM a couple of other members for approval before I post anything else -- just to check and be sure that I have their permission to say anything else.

;)

I believe we should note the fact that the "ignore" feature on certain other (nameless) websites does nothing to stop truly vicious flame wars from occuring.

Only direct action by mods or admins does that with any degree of effectiveness.

Which happens to be the approach they take here at good 'ol "non-free-speech" Rendo.

Attempts at comedy in a thread -- even weak attempts -- don't irritate me any more than personal attacks do. In fact, a little humor can be refreshing at times.

Could someone please pass the popcorn........?

I like Dialyns idea about hiding threads & also about the UD items in out purchase history. In addition, if there is an update, I want to know what the update is. IE...what has changed.

"I believe we should note the fact that the "ignore" feature on certain other (nameless) websites does nothing to stop truly vicious flame wars from occuring." 1 - Nothing will stop a flame war. Renderostiy has them as well. Just as mean and hurtful. THe difference is that renderosity doesn't have a place for them -- certain other nameless sites do. 2 - The purpose of an ignore button is to remove posts by someone one personally deems annoying to one's self. And they do go a Long way towards reducing the sort of idiocy fights that do occur here at Renderosity. Stuff of the nature where someone assumes something said by someone who tends to annoy them is specifically meant about them in particular, when, to most folks, it doesn't appear like anything of the sort....

I vote for an "Obliterate Anything that Annoys Rowan from Existance" button. A girl can dream, after all. Oh. And please - include an Undo. ^_^ RC

Comedy is fine... sarcasm and personal attacks are not. I had the unpleasent experience recently of reading a thread on a movie site that was originally intended to discuss why many people dislike the movie "Paycheck". A few posts logically discussed the issue, and then one member began posting extremely sarcastic and useless threads intended to be funny--at the target's expense. After this they had people cheering him/her on, because the sarcasm really was fairly humorous at times, and anyone who voiced an opinion differing from his/her was immediately broadsided with a blistering attack from this personage. Obviously this hindered the free expression of ideas. "Which happens to be the approach they take here at good 'ol "non-free-speech" Rendo." Renderosity is all about the free expression of ideas without fear. Whether you are sensitive to insult or not is irrelevent. The basic concept is free expression; without the mods locking down threads and deleting posts that are a hindrance to this concept, you have this same thing happening. BTW XENOPHONZ, in case there is any confusion on this, I am not talking primarily about your very light form of sarcasm. Just to clarify. An "ignore" feature might not be a bad idea. I can't think of anyone I have met that I would like to "ignore" (except possibly myself =P). I think that the mods and admins do a very effective job of this for us. Sorry this is so long. I am admittedly somewhat long-winded. =)

Not a problem here. Your words are a little too intelligent and well thought-out to take any kind of serious issue with them.

As for your being long-winded......huh?

I'd say that the length of your post is about average. I've seen many much, much (much) longer-winded posts.

Even written one or two of them myself. Which makes a few sensitive souls uptight. shrug

Add an ignore feature, if the software permits it.

No reason not to.

Stuff of the nature where someone assumes something said by someone who tends to annoy them is specifically meant about them in particular, when, to most folks, it doesn't appear like anything of the sort....

Whether or not an ignore feature was requested with anyone in particular in mind is -- as has been said on another matter -- irrelevant.

If the problem resides in being "chatty", then we've got quite a few members who qualify..........

Personally I've never had any difficulties with someone else's typing habits. If I don't care to see what they've written: then I don't.

However, as has already been indicated a couple of times: an ignore feature is a fine idea.

I'm totally neutral on the issue. It doesn't matter to me whether such a feature exists or not -- because I'll never use it anyway. But I have no objections to an ignore button being added for those who wish it. Message edited on: 05/09/2005 13:34

Well, no one thinks that an "ignore" feature is a bad idea... Everyone is either neutral or favorable. As XENOPHONZ says, no reason not to, so long as the software will support it.
