Just wondering, did anyone see if this worked for PCs?

PJF ( ) posted Mon, 16 August 2004 at 4:08 PM

Er, yes, SWAMP did (see post 5).

Nance ( ) posted Mon, 16 August 2004 at 5:15 PM

Swamp, did I miss a post where it said how you might have made the connection and stumbled onto this bit of wisdom in the first place? Just curious. And do any other formats stop working other than .GIF and .PSD (and .MOV I presume)? Sorry, long thread and may have skimmed past that info.

randym77 ( ) posted Mon, 16 August 2004 at 5:26 PM

PSD still works. It's the Mac formats, like PCT, that go bye-bye. It doesn't seem to affect the ability to render Quicktime movies. You could try renaming the file. If it breaks something you use, just name it back.

Jackson ( ) posted Mon, 16 August 2004 at 7:49 PM

Odd...simply renaming the file didn't seem to do anything for me. But then I moved it out to a different directory and WHOA what a difference! Thanks SWAMP! This is the first tip that actually sped P5 up for me.

randym77 ( ) posted Mon, 16 August 2004 at 7:55 PM

I did have to get out of Poser and back in again before I noticed any speed increase. (I had Poser open when I renamed the file.)

Jackson ( ) posted Mon, 16 August 2004 at 7:57 PM

I didn't.

alt1701 ( ) posted Mon, 16 August 2004 at 8:35 PM

OOOOOOOOOOOOOO! THANK YOU!

xoconostle ( ) posted Mon, 16 August 2004 at 9:49 PM

Big thanks, SWAMP. Definitely worked for me.

Momcat ( ) posted Mon, 16 August 2004 at 11:45 PM

Amazing! I've gone from almost a minute between library changes to only a few seconds. Thank you so much!

soulhuntre ( ) posted Tue, 17 August 2004 at 12:30 AM

Great tip. All I had to do was rename the extension and BLAMMO - faster.

howdy folks,

I tried the "fix" & it definetly speeds up library loads (thanx swamp :-). However while it's true that GIF files no longer work on models (although I can import a GIF as a background pic), I must have a weird version of Poser because pct files (reflection maps) still show up in the menus, load, & render just fine. addendum: GIFs still work as transmaps, just not as tex/bum maps

Momcat ( ) posted Tue, 17 August 2004 at 2:06 AM

pct files are mac image extensions. Most reflection maps are plain
ol' jpegs >^_^

cooler ( ) posted Tue, 17 August 2004 at 2:12 AM

Momcat, the default Poser 4 reflection maps are SilverRefl.pct & GoldRefl.pct (I don't know if it's the same in P5 though)

SWAMP ( ) posted Tue, 17 August 2004 at 2:37 AM

The reflection maps are .pct in both P4 and P5,and can't be opened (if you went the renamed plugin route). Just open them in any image editor, and save back to .jpg or .tif ,then your all set. Note:DON'T try to rename them (or any image file) by hand...you'll really screw them up. Have fun,SWAMP

WOOOOOOO-HOOOOOOO!!!! I love you 8-)

PabloS ( ) posted Wed, 18 August 2004 at 1:15 AM

Just noticed something else in that folder. The "Messages_JPG.txt" file. Edit out the crazy jpg resolutions you never use. (Like who in their right mind wants to save at 25%)

MungoPark ( ) posted Wed, 18 August 2004 at 5:07 AM

If you follow this advice, you have a high chance that some of your pz3 files which use the imageio plugin wont open anymore - happened to me after renaming it.

FishNose ( ) posted Thu, 19 August 2004 at 5:52 AM

Wow... this is some tip. I renamed the Mac file, didn't touch QT. My Poser start is unchanged, over 2 minutes (HUGE Runtime) but: My Libraries list opening time has gone from as much as 15 seconds to - ZERO!! Instant. Amazing. Thanks! :] Fish

Bobbie_Boucher ( ) posted Mon, 03 January 2005 at 3:33 PM

I found this issue entirely confusing. I thought at one time that Poser 5 was supposed to be written from scratch, and that we wouldn't get any of that crappy Poser 4 code. Or at least, I thought we wouldn't get any Mac code since there is Mac version of Poser 5!? I renamed the file in question, and it doesn't seem to have affected the loading time. But then I use external Runtimes anyway.

SWAMP ( ) posted Mon, 03 January 2005 at 3:56 PM

Well Bobbie, you stated in another thread that you don't have QT installed. If you don't have QT installed renaming the plugin isn't going to do anything for you. I'm like you and prefer not to have QT at all (I find it a very intrusive program)......renaming the plugin is for people that can't live without QT. As for Poser5's code not being rewritten as CL promised....well that's pretty old news now. SWAMP

Bobbie_Boucher ( ) posted Mon, 03 January 2005 at 4:56 PM

OH! I see. Maybe Poser 6 or Poser 7 will be a total re-write? I will hold off on any future Poser purchases till they do the real rewrite.

Marque ( ) posted Tue, 20 September 2005 at 12:11 AM

Awesome tip, my runtimes are huge and this really speeded them up. Using poser 6 at the time. Thanks, Marque

Tashar59 ( ) posted Tue, 20 September 2005 at 12:40 AM

Marque, A quick note, If you have Bryce, you need QT to have it work right.

jelisa ( ) posted Tue, 20 September 2005 at 11:15 AM

At first this sped up how long it took Poser 6 to open, but now, P6 takes about 10-15 minutes to open up on my machine. My sister has been using it to rig a figure she modeled, but other than that, I've been using DS since it only takes a few seconds to load.

randym77 ( ) posted Tue, 20 September 2005 at 7:17 PM

I haven't tried this trick with P6, because it opens a lot faster than P5 anyway.

The size of the runtime makes a big difference with Poser. Switching to multiple runtimes and moving them outside the Poser folder really sped things up for me.

bagoas ( ) posted Tue, 27 September 2005 at 4:40 PM

Great tip! Opening libraries is much faster! Starting is faster too.

Jim Burton ( ) posted Tue, 27 September 2005 at 9:09 PM

Gee, 10-15 MINUTES? Poser 6 takes about 13 seconds to start on my machine. DAZ Studio (a beta version) takes about 4 seconds.

What's Quick Time? I've never heard of it. I've never noticed a lag in my library/thumbnails opening.

Quote - Jim, I have a 2.6 GHz P4 with 1 GB RAM and P5 has always taken forever to open on it. Your computer must like you or something :P

Sounds like you need to look into multiple runtimes. When I had all of my files in the main Poser runtime, it took forever to open Poser. Now I have many, many runtimes and Poser takes less than 1 minute to open, probably less.

Actually, I do have several runtimes, about 12 of them.

Acadia ( ) posted Wed, 21 December 2005 at 6:20 PM

The larger your runtime the longer it takes to open Poser. Try creating an empty runtime and have that as your active runtime when you log out of Poser. When you open Poser it shouldn't take very long to open.

Quicktime is an Apple originated multimedia system which handles AFAIK video (.mov), images and audio as well. "Just noticed something else in that folder. The "Messages_JPG.txt" file. Edit out the crazy jpg resolutions you never use. (Like who in their right mind wants to save at 25%)" Not good in P4 at least. I tried that idea earlier and ended up with crappy .jpg images. Turns out the thing is apparently position based - position 1 is 25% so even if you remove all but 100%, that's now position 1 on the menu but 25% is still what you get.

randym77 ( ) posted Wed, 21 December 2005 at 6:27 PM

I've heard you can still render movies in Quicktime, even if you rename that file. But I wouldn't know. Quicktime won't run on my machine, with or without Poser.
