Subject: How to mix 2 shaders....the best way..

I'm trying mix snow with water.....Any help would be appreciated...been trying this for a couple hours... Thanks in advance :)

ShawnDriscoll ( ) posted Thu, 29 December 2005 at 3:15 PM

I'd have to see a picture of what you've done so far.

Yes, this is kinda vague. Mix them how? To achieve what effect?

ren_mem ( ) posted Thu, 29 December 2005 at 5:13 PM

Yeah I am not sure what you mean either. Layered or like melting snow? Snow on a lake? A specific look you are trying to match?

Snow on a lake.......Water With snow/ice mixed together. Where you have water showing with snow blobs/ice patches mixed in. I've been working with the environment area...slope etc...but it's wonky looking.

ShawnDriscoll ( ) posted Thu, 29 December 2005 at 6:15 PM

Sounds like you just need to make ice rocks and vary their sizes in water next to each other. One shader for the rocks, and one for the water.

Yeah...there are ways I can get around mixing...but I need to learn how to mix 2 shaders and I'm kind of lost...getting there...but still..... Am I making sense?

ren_mem ( ) posted Thu, 29 December 2005 at 8:17 PM

Ok...I think I understand. Yes, Carrara has alot to understand about the shader tree. Alot of options. The manual does have information in there. This is not layers list or anything else.Someone could spend alot of time writing tips on that alone. Here is a very simple method to start. Multichannel Mixer--> You get source 1 and 2 then a blender. So say 2 colors and fractal noise as the blender. Or could be 2 textures and a blender. It goes on and on, but try simple first.

For what you want probably will have to do a layers lists. probably an ice terrain w/ a lake plane then add the other details like some icebergs etc. Then add a layer to the lake texture. This is only a guess tho and I only have a vague idea of what such a scene would look like...since I avoid cold and snow..altho pictures are nice and safe. :D

Maybe, if you were using a plane, you could have one as water and the second one with snow--using the new C5 displacement on the snow--then raise or lower this second snow plane to suit? Looking with upside thinking to solve a problem?

A Ren-mem...yes trying to start simple..the shader area is easy yet complex at the same time.... @bwtr - another good idea.... I had my water on a plane & was trying to mix with snow....it had more snow than ice...lets say 98% water & 2% snow/ice.....need to do more playing around. I was using the multi-channel mixer...and thought later the environment might work better...still playing... All good ideas :) Thank you all once again :) You've been a big help :)

ShawnDriscoll ( ) posted Thu, 29 December 2005 at 9:51 PM · edited Thu, 29 December 2005 at 9:56 PM

bwtr beat me to it.

For an ice object, I would use a multi channel mixer to mix two channel mixers together. The first channel mixer would be a clear shader with a lot of refraction in it. The second channel mixer would be a light white/blue translucent shader (maybe some SSS in it too). Fractal Noise would then be used for the blender of the two. Then toss the ice objects into some very cold water. The more ice, the more ice there is in the water.

In my opinion, creating a terrain with blobs and using terrain distribution would be much easier and more effective.

More great ideas...I'm off to bed now & will continue on this mission tomorrow :) Thanks all :) Happy New Year :)

Someone lost me somewhere... glad it's not my project, cause all I see are my muses throwing Ice cubes at the computer screen... thanks for that image shonner. :)

Here is one I threw together, but the mix may not be what you are looking for.I am enjoying the improvements in the shader tree by the way.Barely touched early versions, but I can see big difference in usefulness.

Looking good ren mem :)

Here's a simple approach. I had the snow and water shaders already made. -Kix

Kixum ( ) posted Fri, 30 December 2005 at 12:16 PM

BTW, it's just an infinite plane. The water is a simple blue with a blue reflection. No transparency. -Kix

Kixum ( ) posted Fri, 30 December 2005 at 12:17 PM

Oh and I did use shader ops to multiply the size of the spots to get them to the way I wanted but you don't need shader ops to get this to work. -Kix

enigmaticredfrog ( ) posted Fri, 30 December 2005 at 12:29 PM

Kix you could add displacement to that for an even more awesome effect.... but you already knew that, I'm sure. Christina (a fairly newbie)

I did this one using Kixum's Multi Channel Mixer described technique with Veloute's Perturbation, Fractal noise texture and 2d random map. I learned a lot from this thread. I just bought Veloute plugin and I think it's great and fun to play around with. Got a great deal with the Inagoni Advance Pack...20% discount on eovia.com.

Thanks Guys,

Stan

Nice job Stan... guess I should add veloute to my wish list. Kudos Christina

All these look XLT...... I didn't think my lame question would genereate such a response...but I've learned alot as well :) Thanks :)

ren_mem ( ) posted Sat, 31 December 2005 at 4:08 AM

Well there is no such thing as a lame question. Lots to always learn. Discussing texturing is a never ending subject in and of itself.I liked the icy look so I stuck with that, but there are tons of ways to mix.I got Apack also on sale, but been having more fun I think with Shoestring.I didn't use that tho. Regular noise or turb would do fine.I do wish UV were better tho...in hex and carrara. Texturing is so important and the tree is great, but uv mapping is an industry standard and very important. That seems to get ignored alot in their products.Well things are definitely getting better and no product is perfect. Love to have zbrush, but that is out of the budget at the moment...that already spent more than planned.(LOL)Viva La Internet!

I need to do a correction on my snow and water image upon further experimentation. All that was needed to this image using Kixum's Multi Channel Mixer described technique with Shader Ops Scale and a Fractal noise texture for the snow texture (I don't know if I needed Shader Ops it is just real handy and easy plugin to use for something like this). I still think Veloute plugin is great, however, it was not needed for my image. Still learning. Thanks for understanding, I don't want to mislead anyone on the use of plugins. I love all the examples posted on this great learning thread. Happy New Year Everyone! Stan

Here's a rough draft. Used SSS for the ice.

NOw shonner... that doesn't look like ice cubes thrown in my pc... it looks WAY better. Christina the sometimes confused... other times twisted.

This is another icy approach. I have been playing w/ the vase tutorial in hex also. Hex is great. Tutorials are hard to follow in parts...no text...have to slow it down to see what tool they click.By the way...why do the clouds tend to look distorted in the sky with some framing, like wide production box? I have seen some bad distortions.
