Subject: Vue 6 feature list

ShawnDriscoll ( ) posted Mon, 27 March 2006 at 11:56 AM · edited Fri, 22 November 2024 at 6:37 AM

I'm curious what new features people want to have in Vue 6?

agiel ( ) posted Mon, 27 March 2006 at 1:13 PM

I have a long wishlist, but I would be happy with just improvements to materials : - better volumetric materials for more realistic clouds - better control on color distribution - more customization functions to get real cel shading or sub surface scattering Anything else would be a plus...

Bragi ( ) posted Mon, 27 March 2006 at 1:37 PM

TRUE volumetrics for clouds, better render times, maybe SSS support rather than have to "fake" eveything seems to be the norm, but number one should be better rendering engine ie: faster!!!

Only put off until tomorrow what you are willing to die having left undone.

attileus ( ) posted Mon, 27 March 2006 at 2:39 PM

A more stable performance Don't calculate Ecosys instances in hidden areas (on the backside of a mountain) Do not EVER link to materials/texture pics instead of immediately transforming them into Vue mats (many error messages because of lost texture locations...grrrr) An important thing is Geosculpting; I want to do massive works in the TerrainLab editing terrains sideways not only downwards; the TerrainLab need some serious update so that we can sculpt different terrain objects by rotating the terrain in evert direction and accessing the terrain sideways. Some update on the Tree lab

diolma ( ) posted Mon, 27 March 2006 at 3:00 PM

True displacement instead of just bump-mapping. Area rendering that affected part of the original image (like "plop rendering" in Bryce). Getting the function room to be able to automatically change it's node's input/output parameters to match those of what you want to plug the function into (like Poser's materials room does). A way to push the preview updates to the top of the priority list, so I can see more quickly the effect of the latest change I've made. (Plus many more I can't remember at present.) Some of the above may already be available, if they are I'd add "a better "how to do" section in the manual":-)) True displacement (I know I've already said that, but it's my one, real, most important wish-list item) Cheers, Diolma

GPFrance ( ) posted Mon, 27 March 2006 at 4:44 PM

I only can speak for myself : Pardon me, but before dreaming of a n 6, I'd like to have n 5 running without hickups.

I don't really "need" new features
(but one could imagine nice things like "real" instances, or having multiple .vue windows on screen to copy/paste from one to another, or "referencing" of layers from other .vue secenes, or detacheable windows and buttonpalettes, displacement mapping...)

but I really would prefer, to have the existing features improved and stable, first of all.
Coherent coordinate systems, refreshing the active view window first, independent focussing on selected obj, non-jumping window, clean handing-over or shutdown of application, cows optimized for different speeds in farm, no memory problems on long runs, terrain editor reviewed, get out the grain from renders, Mac Vue-icons working as they should... That kind of worries.
Look at this forum, pick some.
I'm not sure to up$grade to a n 6 before, or instead of.

Monsoon ( ) posted Mon, 27 March 2006 at 4:54 PM

I would like Vue to be hearty and robust instead of fickle and fragile. What is needed to make that happen is beyond me. I would like Solid Growth to be more economical on the transmapped polycounts of the vegetation. Also only visible instancing with ecosystems. I would like to also see true displacements rendered. I would like a decent wireframe for those not OpenGl endowed. M

bruno021 ( ) posted Mon, 27 March 2006 at 5:03 PM

You know GPFrance, about the grain, it would've been so easy for e-on to get rid of it, by simply modifying parameters in their ready made atmospheres. This grain prevented me from buying Vue for years ( since Vue3, actually, and the 1st I bought was 5 Esprit), and I must'nt be the only one. Shame for such a great program. Now features for Vue6: - faster render engine comes first, because otherwise all the following features won't be able to be rendered in decent times) - displacement mapping - SSS, faked if render engine is not improved - working polygon mesh smoothing - more controls over ecosystems ( mostly on the density tab features) - true volumetric clouds, thousands of them in a render seen from above is what I need ( terragen 2 will soon do it, e-on!) - better terrain brushes, that don't take away the details when applied - no more memory leaks - real Poser dynamics import, no more bad hair days, please! ( though this should already be present in Vue5) - better cow management

LMcLean ( ) posted Mon, 27 March 2006 at 11:04 PM
  • Improved rendering of volumetrics, (shadows and cleaner renders) E-ON look at Cinema 4D's renderer please!!! - Faster render engine!!! Please!!! (Cinema 4D again) - Cleaner rendering (can't explain just look at Cinema 4D's renderer) - Larger Animation Preview (I can't see my animation previw in a tiny thumbnail) - More detail in all areas of terrain (see Terragen terrains. They look more real. It seems like they can pack more detail in to there scenes. - No more modeling stuff in Vue. (It takes up precious resources that can be used elsewhere) I already model my objects in a separate application. - Fluid dynamics. Ocean waves, etc. Just Improve what's there before you add other stuff!!!!!!!

rodluc2001 ( ) posted Tue, 28 March 2006 at 12:22 AM
  • faster render engine (again...) - support for external render engine (like v-ray, mental ray...) - particle emitters - real caustics based on photons emission

estherau ( ) posted Tue, 28 March 2006 at 2:43 AM

A proper cartoon renderer and cell shader which can be set up easily and not having to change the textures with each change in the pz3. Being able to choose whether or not to change textures on reposing a PZ3 and updating. Love esther

Hm, can't we post/send this wishlist to e-on? I'm sure they would find it useful when working on the next version.

bruno021 ( ) posted Tue, 28 March 2006 at 3:37 AM

I hope they are already working on the next version, attileus!

firebolt ( ) posted Tue, 28 March 2006 at 7:19 AM

I don't really need a new version until all the current functions are fixed and work reliably! As I'm afraid, this will remain a dream... my wishlist for a next version: - really good clouds (and other volumetrics) - better control over terrain structure (for example make smooth slopes in part of terrain while keeping the rest fractal) - beautiful clouds ;-) - more Solid Growth plants resp. better ways to really create new species with the plant editor - wouldn't mind the renderer to be faster - did I mention the clouds??

attileus ( ) posted Tue, 28 March 2006 at 8:42 AM

Ooops, I forgot to mention one thing: improve the Vue render engine so that we easily can have Terragen-like photoquality render! :-D For me it's a mystery how a freeware landscaping programme -TG- can produce incredible lanscape renders that beat almost every middle/high end landscaping software around. Also, when scaling up/down textures, bumps, and many other settings there are 3 different sliders; now I would like to have the option to having ONE more slider (or a "clamp") for EVERY scaling up/down function (X-Y-Z) AT THE SAME TIME! I can't fool around with 3 separate sliders when I only want to resize a texture/bump etc. fast. :-) A soft, antialiased wireframe/workplace view (as in Bryce) would be a pleasant surprise. Agree with the stability problems; I've never worked with a more flickery/unstable software since Bryce 2. Despite the fact that my version is up to date and there are just a few bacground progs. it crashes like crazy; yes, I save often but not every second so I feel pretty irritated about the stability issue losing a lot of hard work. (Yepp, I should buy a new computer system as well...) Nevertheless I (a former Brycer) like the way how Vue evolves into an inspiring software!

Dynamic water! Oceans, lakes, whaterfalls, and guysers, splashes and all.

svdl ( ) posted Thu, 30 March 2006 at 6:12 AM

A few very minor additions (not Vue 6 material, more like a service release): In the world browser right-click menu: - a Rename option - a Delete option. Fixup of Poser materials upon import. Shader tree support would be wonderful (but tough to do), I'd settle for correctly importing highlights and reflections. Ability to import a single frame fron a Poser animation containing dynamic hair. Keep "collapse identical materials" setting upon reimport of a linked Poser scene Better default settings for the renderer (less grain). Fix up the scaling in ecosystems (right now an eco'ed object is half the size the same object outside an ecosystem) None of this calls for a new Vue release - it should be in the next service release. For the next Vue release I'd love to see: - 64 bit support - large memory support - faster preview response in complicated scenes - mesh smoothing - displacement mapping - Material zones like in Poser, 3D Max, and many other 3D apps - controllable ambient occlusion (in object/material properties) - HyperVue support for rendering stills to disk - Full material support (glow, Hybrid 2.5 D) when rendering to disk - More options for roots, trunks and branches in SolidGrowth plants. - Dynamic water would be fantastic indeed.

The pen is mightier than the sword. But if you literally want to have some impact, use a typewriter

Here is a minor suggestion; when you work with layers and want to close all except one (you work on) then you must do it manually which can be time-consuming; you could right click for an option like "close/make invisible all layers except this/the active one" and of course "show all layers" - this would pleasantly speed up the work flow.

Please, friends, please ! I understand, we all would like to have the ultimate rendrerer. But rasonnably, apply the grey volumetric cloud material, add general illumination :
E-on's is "just humans", and I think taht they are doing their best to have the thing running. But they are not a super-billion-dollar multinational group.
If we hurry them to add new features and make n 6, in the actual state of n5,
we probably will get a new version for +xyz.na $ +vat+shipping, not compatible with anything but itself, containing the old and known problems,
plus a bunch of new ones,
minimal system config two intel quadcore with Nvidia 9876_512_PCix and 8 Gb ram.
Do we really want such ?

I don't. If you do, don't be astonished about bugs, diletantism, $ectarism or such, later.

I'd prefer to have a n5 first, improved or re-written, clean, and fast. I'm quite conscient that making such a such a 5 "excellence" update would cost extra money, and I'd be ready to pay something (well, keep it reasonnable, and add displacement mapping ;-)
If I'm the only one to think this way, I beg your pardon.

attileus ( ) posted Fri, 31 March 2006 at 7:10 AM

I may agree with you; first, a rock-solid V5 with ironed out bugs and small changes for better work flow; then we can work and wait peacefully until V6 comes. Nobody wants another flickery version and V5 is already great demonstrated by robertczarny here at Rosity...:-D

I request: - 64 bit support - FBX file import

LMcLean ( ) posted Mon, 03 April 2006 at 12:03 PM

What is FBX?

surveyman ( ) posted Mon, 03 April 2006 at 1:38 PM

FBX is an universal 3D file exchange format, initially brought out by Alias. FYI below... http://usa.autodesk.com/adsk/servlet/index?id=6837478&siteID=123112

thundering1 ( ) posted Tue, 04 April 2006 at 8:08 PM

FBX file support, 64-bit support, and I'd love to see the textures more directly placeable like in Bryce - where from a drop-down menu you can choose for it to just be on the "object top" of the object, or on the "object sides", etc. And already with the ability to have multiple textures at once, this should be easy to integrate. If this is already available (without going through endless menus and adjusting minute settings) I'd love for someone to point it out. I realize the main goal for any developer is for bug fixes and stability, but in talking about a v6 "feature wishlist", you gotta list the desired features.

replicand ( ) posted Thu, 06 April 2006 at 9:42 PM

Regarding the grain; sorry I'm late to the party. I think that Vue is great as is. V5I is stable on my system without updates. My major peeve is the grain, which had put me off to the point of considering to use a different solution. Furthermore, why would ILM use a product that has such a major "defect"? I recently discovered that grain can easily be removed in Photoshop or AfterEffects (I do animation primarily but the process is exactly the same) if you apply a Gaussian blur to the image(s) with a value of 0.5, vastly improving the image's (perceived) quality.

Eric Walters ( ) posted Sun, 09 April 2006 at 5:17 PM

Hi, Overall I'm pleased with Vue 5INF- would like to see a few additions- Sub Surface Scattering, larger control handles for rotating and moving objects. Also I'd like to see the PARTIAL handling of High Dynamic Range Images addressed. "Real" handling of HDRI images. It seems that Vue opens the Image.hdr file-and converts it to 24 bit. When I adjust the brightness and contrast of the image-it fades rather than getting brighter- and no adjustment can bring the dark areas of the image to visibility. It is those Intense contrasts which help make HDRI lighting so realistic! Recall that an HDR image is much like a "pile of photos" each with a different exposure-and each exposure should be accessible. In Vue it appears to be ONe average exposure blended from the 96 bit .hdr into a 24 bit image. The result? A less realistic hdr render! A fully High Dynamic Range Image-is just that! I'll make some comparison renders against a program that keeps the High Dynamic Range Image intact as 96 bit

Yes, let's have the problems with 5 fixed before 6 is released, please. Tacking on extra storeys when the foundations are shaky is a bad idea.

Irish ( ) posted Tue, 11 April 2006 at 12:49 PM

I would like to see all the problems in 5 fixed too before they move on to 6.  I agree with Monsoon and CPFrance......of course, this won't happen, but we can always dream.

Definately a better wireframe!!!

I think that it is extremely good fortune for everyone using Vue that E-on has partnered with ILM! This will pump in added reverue and programming expertise as ILM's in-house coders write neccesary plug-ins and help iron out "bugs" to improve Vue's stability. It HAS to be more stable in order to be used in a professional production pipeline, so it WILL be more stable. I suspect that all the plug-in development and coding improvement will soon trickle down to everyone using Vue Infinite, and probably in some ways to the more basic versions of Vue. I have a suspicion that Vue 6 will have many of the things on your wish list.

thomllama ( ) posted Wed, 12 April 2006 at 4:57 AM

make it STABLE... oh... and maybe make it even more STABLE!!! it is the one and only program on my Mac that crashes!!! ok that said. how about getting rid of tht rediculous upgrade system!!!! everytime something goes awire with Vue I have to go back and enter up to 9 diff old reg #'s... kinda sad and stupid. If I purchase an upgrade.. yes i should enter my last versions reg #... but not have to go back two or 3 versions, plus all the plug-in's upgrade reg #'s and all of thier upgrades... worse than a background check to get on a military base. after that's fixed....then add more features.

Phantast ( ) posted Wed, 12 April 2006 at 10:24 AM

The thing that makes me grind my teeth the most (apart from the memory leak crash) is the confusion between materials and material zones, which cripples copying and pasting of materials, and makes working with Poser imports so much harder than it ever needed to be.

SolidGrowth applied to cloud generation. I'd love to de able to have a big ominous thunderhead in Vue instead of painting one by hand.

Easier water manipulation. Waves, surf, etc.

terains that can me edited from all sides. right not in order to make a cave or an indent in a vertical portion of a terain you have to do some cimplex bolean operation. why not just make the edior do all sides of the terrain.

-Timberwolf- ( ) posted Thu, 13 April 2006 at 8:51 AM

It would be great,if you could really use it this time.No crashes every ten minutes, better memory management and faster rendering so you can do animation at least in broadcast quality in reasonable rendertimes.I don't want a 25000€ renderfarm just to render some VUE-stuff.

LordWexford ( ) posted Thu, 13 April 2006 at 11:20 AM

I don't realistically expect to see a Vue 6 until well after 64 bit processors & Operating Systems become the norm.  There is no point whatsoever in Eon bringing out a new version that isn't fully 64 bit compatible, so I'm not holding my breath.

In the meantime I agree with the general feeling that we'd like to see Vue 5 as a fully stable prog first - no more "Vue 5 has encountered an error and needs to close" messages when all you're doing is working on a simple image.

Personally speaking, I'd be over the moon to read that Eon & Planetside were coming together to combine the best bits of Terragen 2 and Vue 5.  Now THAT would be a programme worth saving up for!!

One issue here is the problem of what tends to happen with software packages in general. Upgrades get driven by the Marketing Department. To generate more revenue, the company wants to release new versions, and the MD doesn't want to promote version N+1 with the slogan "Now! No longer crashes as often as version N did!". So the programmers are told to spend their time adding lots of new features instead of fixing bugs.

And alas, we users are so gullible as to fall for this and let the software house get away with it. This is why we have to live with crappy software; I'm not targetting specifically e-on here, there are worse offenders.

This thread is a hostage to fortune. It sends out the message that if e-on were to release Vue 6 with some of the features suggested, we would buy it - even if it didn't fix the bugs in Vue 5.

regaltwo ( ) posted Thu, 20 April 2006 at 8:42 PM

I would love to be able to pose and repose Poser characters inside Vue.  Right now, it's very hit or miss, and it would be great if you could do these adjustments in Vue.

kjpweb ( ) posted Thu, 04 May 2006 at 5:53 PM

As long as Vue sports such fundamental hickups as there are right now - I doubt that Vue 6
will be something to look for.

  • The Render engine is - compared to the competition too slow.
  • The file handling is a catastophe - only eclipsed by poser.
  • Import of 3DS files is very flawed
  • No interface customization available
  • Constant problems with models save as .vob - textures get lost despite being embedded.
  • obnoxious and illogical error messages
  • Editor windows too small
  • Terrain editor is too limited (and small)
  • and so on...

The only chance I see for V6 being interesting is when they would revamp all the flawed areas in a restructured interface/engine.

But I'm afraid we just will have a new 5 - that is being called 6... :)

well .. I can see that everyone seems more interested in getting "5" straight before giving it the "6" name one feature I'd like to see though.... dual monitors.... the interface is limited to everything wrapped around the working area, which is great in one way... but anyone using 2 monitors would like to have the menus and pallets option, that way we can FILL one monitor with the working space and use the second for all the "stuff"

Hexagon, Carrara, Sculptris, and recently Sketchup.

Cheers ( ) posted Fri, 05 May 2006 at 5:27 AM

More flexible interface; workflow, workflow, workflow!!

Stability; easier workflow!!

I'm not really interested if E-on add particles, SSS, micro-polygon dissplacement etc, etc...I'll use Maya for that anyway. It is far better at it.

If I want volumetric clouds like Terragen, then I'll just use Terragen.

Now, if E-on make Vue more stable, then I will use it more.

It's just a tool in the box, amongst many others. Hopefully E-on will take a different path this time and concentrate more on stability rather than extra features. The extra features are nice as long as they are within a solid application.

Cheers

P.S. I'm not knocking Vue; it does what I want it to do...I just want it to do it better and without less headaches ;)

Stability.

Instancing (non-eco system based).

A more responsive wire frame interface view.

Dual monitor (with a gui that allows you to move things about on it) would be cool.

Ability to merge scene files.

More stability.
