You forgot http://www.netherworks-studios.com This one is funny too. DAZ sues e-frontier Ok this one is funny and mean in no way all. RuntimeDNA Hacked Don't see how this is mean Free stuff thing Agree completely! There are also some others out there that are truly mean so I do agree with the idea of your post.

In the long term, pranks are much less nasty nowadays than, say, two generations ago. The point of having prank days (like Purim, Halloween, 4/1) is to channel meanness into approved forms, and to keep folks on their guard. Deception is all around, and we need to stretch our bullshit-detector glands now and then so we won't fall for it quite so easily on non-prank days.

Free stuff providers being compared to spammers: Correction - it was people repeatedly posting links to free stuff that were compared to spammers. Specifically, the post was a thinly-veiled attack on Acadia, who was rightfully upset. It doesn't read like an April fool at all. The object of an April Fool is to get people to credulously believe that some ridiculous thing is true (like bonsai kittens). Griping about the actions of one or two members of this forum is no April fool. It looks to me as though the poster, on realizing they were getting no support, suddenly changed tack and tried to pretend it was all a joke.
This thread reminds me of my grandfather, what a gentle, kind man but with the most quirky sense of humor sometimes. He use to say things that were kind of mean, teasing, thinking it was funny. When he saw it upset you he use to say - "It was with my mouth I was saying it not with my heart I was meaning it." Guess he just did not understand that it was with my heart I was hearing it? Not everyone can look out of someone else's eyes or everyones eyes and see the many ways that something can be perceived by others. You try harder maybe when you remember listening with your own heart. Lets remember the day and everyone's different senses of humors. Some you mention I got a great laugh over, one I did not think was funny, and it reminded me of grandfather whom I still love. IMHO April Fool is a lot tamer than it use to be. But there is always going to be that spirit of devilment to it. Take not offence at our differences on this day. Ignore those things said without thinking unless they really do great harm to you personally. Just MHO of the day. :-)
The post about free stuff links was NO WAY an april fools joke. It was a lame attempt to divert rightful anger to "oh but it was just for fun" --- I loved the Daz sues CP and the RDNA ones because it only took a few moments to discover that iit WAS a joke. One of the danish newspapers today (what is the danish version of The Sun for the UK members...) had a story that the former foreign minister had converted to islam. It was pretty well done, if it wasn't for the fact that you knew the man was as far from ever being a muslim as can be LOL

LilWolff, the alternative is to ask how anyone could possibly be so dumb as to think that such a whinge could ever be thought witty or clever or amusing. I'm well acquainted with the sort of person who says hurtful things and then tries to weasel out of it by claiming "it was meant as a joke". Yeah, right. Rather too late I have thought of an April Fool which could have been got up quite nicely in the style of a Daz press release - that Daz have bought up the rights to Posette and will shortly be re-releasing her as V4. Advantages: this great figure already has substantial market penetration; there is a demand for less polygon-heavy figures; no more unpopular morph injection; great product support out of the box, etc. With a little work one could have put something together that would fool some newcomers and have even a few more experienced people thinking, "This IS a joke ... or is it?" And this, I hope, will be my last post to this antiquated Bondware system, as I will shortly be heading to the airport; back next week.
I thought the thread started by Machine Claw was about a bet between Machine Claw and byAnton. Trying to get 100 posts in a certain period of time. The whole thing seems to have gotten out of hand. Sorry to see the ruffled feathers. I consider most of your names on my screen as old friends now. Sorry to see ANY discord between you all. Best Wishes, Rance
JHoagland, Sit down, have a glass of wine, and just breathe. You are way over reacting to MachineClaw's thread. It is kinda funny that noone was named but so many took it personally as if it was about them. Noone was slapped in the face. Not you and not anyone and most certainly not nearly as directly as MachineClaw was. Some people really brought out some claws. Now if the fool joke was Rendo actually officially announcing this..then I could see you point. But an opinion post is just an opinion post. Like this one. It's over. Dnn't worry about it. And most certainly don't dwell on it. Cheers, Anton

hoag, "all fools day" has always been based on cruelty and mischief. its origins (in case nobody already mentioned this) were in an old Roman festival, that they in turn got from some animistic ritual of their predecessors. in the roman practice, the fool (a.k.a. scapegoat or lord of misrule) was executed (sacrificed) at the end of the festival.
april fools has always been "mean", because people's ideas of humour diverge wildly, and many people don't have a good sense for how far they can go with somebody else. and in a community where there are lots of different people from all sorts of cultures -- it's not at all surprising that one person's idea of a joke really gets under somebody else's skin. telling people to lighten up and not take it too seriously isn't the best way to deal with hurt feelings. saying "sorry, i didn't mean to hurt you" works a lot better, IMO. do i sound preachy? i sound preachy. sorry. :) i just always see this sort of thing happen online, and it's too bad.
Phantast said - "And this, I hope, will be my last post to this antiquated Bondware system..." You mean you think the changeover to PHP forums is real? It's an April Fool gag. Yeah, I know the story wasn't started on April 1st, but apparently that's not how these things are done anymore ;)

April Fool's has always been mean. Making people look like idiots/cause them pain/embarrass them to get a laugh isn't a fun or nice thing to do. And using the excuse that "it's April Fool's Day" is just a way to be cruel without being branded as such. I was only just explaining this to my kids the other day, and oddly enough they both agreed (one is 10, t'other is 12). Go figure :) The Fool in any form of divination is nothing like the one portrayed on April Fool's Day. Just a little OT info :) My head contains lots of it LOL
:) Poke poke poke. What a bunch of wet blankets. It is a slap in the face to all of those people who enjoy creating and sharing April Fool Day jokes. :) Now if only Tutorials and tech support threads got this much attention....

There's no reason why it all can't just be done tactfully and in fun. There's a lot of cruelty everwhere, mostly from selfishness. I think what we did was fun, unless of course, you're offended by us poking fun at pet clothing or overhyped fashions. I also have had a couple of folks apparently get concerned or upset over the "Grab Bag". They don't know all the details of what is in it, so that idea is "risky". Er, like I'd drop a virus on someone... Oh yeah, real good for business.

Learn from your mistakes, next time you need to provide TWO Grab Bags...~ROFL~ By the way, thanks for the cool...err...well, I won't spoil the surprise for others, but I have a similar set for Nigel (a.k.a. I loved working the night before April Fools. The night charge nurse makes the schedule for the next day and when I would be in charge I also created a bogus patient information kardex and placed it into the slot of a patient. This "patient" made the sickest patient in the intensive care look healthy, LOL When the nurses of the day shift came on to write down their patient assignments, one lucky nurse would find that she has the most horrendous nursing assignment one could ever dream of having. Not only did she have her regular 6 patients, but one of them had so many tubes coming out of every oriface, multiple IVs, scheduled tests and procedures, obscure diseases etc, for 3 nurses to care for intensively and still not get it all done in 8 hours. We would let her/him off the hook eventually and give them the real patient information kardex. Talk about a visible sign of relief on their face when they found out it was a joke, LOL

hmm..I thought Saturnalia was where they killed the 'king' at the end of the festivities..the Christians copped Christmas outta that one (to be honest, there's just so many weird Roman customs to keep track of..walking around the house spitting out beans as a religious observation, and the
punishments..being tied up in a sack with a badger, and 2 other animals, and thrown off the cliffs above the Tiber, into the river below..whatta buncha guys..;) and they say we're mean..

OT: When did April Fools become mean? Answer= I don't know, but I for one am tired of all the little april fools kiddies thinking their funny when they aren't. I for one will be glad when its april second and this day is over. Thanks, STICK IN THE MUD

As someone who got sucked in on the whole 'freebies' thread, and felt quite aggrieved with the things that MachineClaw was suggesting/intimating, I thought I should weigh in with my opinion here, post-'April Fools!' revelation. It was a joke. Admittedly, I'm not sure I found it particularly funny, but neither did I see it as mean-spirited, or an attempt to use April Fool's as an excuse for what had previously been a serious post. The fact that Anton backs up MachineClaw on their plans to try and get 100 posts within 24 hours of the thread starting adds further credence to the fact this was preplanned. Looking back over the post, MachineClaw never actually attacked anyone. Peoplew jumped to the conclusion that he was targeting specific individuals - I think I might have been the first to mention Acadia's name in her defence, but I could be wrong - but all he did was talk about the general trend of people posting links to freebie sites. In retrospect, some of his comments were designed to inflame debate and were simply ridiculous. 'Poser has never been about content' is a prime example of this. But the post was not about freebies being unwanted, or that freebie-makers should quit or go home. The only thing stated in that direction was that 'several commercial merchants have said that freebies harm their possible income', or words to that effect. I'm not defending MachineClaw and Antont's choice of joke, necessarily, or saying that this was the funniest thing I've read this year. But I do think we should recognise that this was an attempt, however misguided, at a geniune April Fool's prank, rathyer than a backing down of a serious attack. And april Fool's has always been mean, if you're the victim of the hoax/joke. jonthecelt
I can't speak for anyone else I thought it was fantastic. I do love social commentary and I think that thread speaks volumes. Being it was a perfectly legitimate opinion post but still guarenteed to be hot-topic. And was presented in simple question form as an opinion. Then it went so out of context with people actually making up stuff that was never said. ..a perfect summary of how threads snowball into fiction. We being in it together would make it a troll magnet. The only bad side I saw in it was from the people who dug in, got comfy and sincerely seemed to enjoy smacking MachineClaw and getting others more upset and then annoyed they lost a reason to slam someone and be angry. The fact that MachineCLaw was insulted and put down numerous times by people in a mob fashion, where he never said anything about anyone, was pretty sad. The obvious 12 hours before midnight, the hints by me, the other post appearing and people still were convinced it was serious. It is so rediculous and it is still going on and more important than tutorial and tech support posts that go ignored. To sum it up, it was a perfect parody on what happens in forums predictably, reliable, and consistently. It was more to poke fun at and draw attention to the way be treat each other, prioritize our roles, and handle other people's opinions. Poser is a crazy place. And today is another day.

rereading the whole thread (yes, I am that weird) I haven't noticed a SINGLE slapping comment till you guys said that it was actually a joke. After this things quickly got ugly. There was a lot of disagreeing, sure, but since WHEN disagreeing with someone's opinion is called smaking?
And, I am sorry to add that posting that topic meter didn't help to calm people down either. For me, personally, it was a not-so-delicate hint at the whole bunch of disagreeing people as a lynching mob. Maybe I (like most of the forumites) was " making up stuff that was never said." but some things are pretty obvious without saying. Like, did I write directly: "your joke sucked and left a foul taste in my mouth"? No, I didn't, till now and even NOW it is, like, theoretical question that has nothing to do with what I really mean, isn't it? ;o)
People tend to read between the lines and don't forget that many of us are non-native English speakers that have different mentality and see things a bit from a different angle.

telling people to lighten up and not take it too >> seriously isn't the best way to deal with hurt >> feelings. saying "sorry, i didn't mean to hurt >> you" works a lot better, IMO. I'm disappointed that the two guys who set this "joke" up haven't got the class to do that. My opinion of both of them will need some repair. The more they defend themselves, the less I believe them. An apology to Acadia and Jim, for starters, would be a sign of a bit of maturity. >> I thought Saturnalia was where they killed the 'king' >> at the end of the festivities. Actually, sensible folks killed the king whenever an opportunity arose. Not as often as they did witches, but then, that was an availability thing. Not too many kings to choose from. It's a tradition much missed. Ritual flaying at the end of your second term might make running for President a bit less attractive to slimeballs and crooks. Only the truly Elect would apply, eager to meet their Heavenly reward. M
Please, can we let this go and move on? Joke or not, it doesn't really matter anymore. It's done and it's over. Let's put it behind us and all move on :)

I found the lawsuit and Netherworks pages hilarious--but both of them happened ON April 1st and not March 31st. As someone who got suckered in by MachineClaw and Anton's e-mail, I still stand behind everything I said BUT I'm kinda ticked at them because, for some strange reason (sarcasm dripping here), I wasn't expecting an April Fools message in MARCH. Maybe they are on DAZ's calendar where the March Madness sale is mainly taking place in April (not that I'm complaining about the sales and give-aways). What got me so hot in the original message was that someone here was so crass as to compare postings about free stuff to the sexual difficiency/life insurance/money laundering crap of real-life spam. That seemed like a slap in the face to people trying to be helpful which is what the true meaning of that thread turned out to be IMHO. Maybe I should have picked that personality trait up from the original posting.
In answer to the topic title: When I was born. It has continued every year since, and gets meaner each year. See, My birthday is the first of April. So it's always been a rather cruel day for me, lol

I always thought that April Fools Day (or the day before) was meant to be a day of "fool your friends" with humorous pranks. When it change to become a day of mean pranks?
