Subject: Creating new objects

dahitokiri ( ) posted Mon, 12 June 2006 at 6:35 PM · edited Fri, 27 December 2024 at 3:09 PM

I suppose I'm rather new to Poser and its intricacies and, so far, I've been using models and clothes and hairs made by other people (all of which are absolutely gorgeous by the way :) ). Now, however, I'm interested in making those objects myself...especially when I can't find what I'm looking for. So, I'd like to request any tutorials or guides of any sort that can help me learn the process of making clothes, accessories, and hair, as well as the morphs that accompany them.

Any help would be greatly appreciated. :)

My advice(depending on if you have used any 3D modeling apps before) would be to download and try several 3D modeling software and see which one you feel comfortable using. Start off with any tutorials for the particular one you choose to get a better feel for how it works. You can check out this link for some mention of the different ones out there. Mainly the bottom line is to just have fun with whatever one you choose and don't get frustrated.

I already have that point covered. I was wondering more about dealing with the internals of poser and how to model and fit things for stuff in there.

Well, there's a wealth of tutorials out there to make props, characters, etc.; it depends on what your skill levels are. There's modeling programs like Wings and Blender (both free), that you can create everything from helmets and shoes (about where I am..;) to  complete characters (Quinlor has a good tut on character creation, for example).

Doc Geep has some very good tuts on many aspects of character creation, rigging (or boning), mats, clothing, etc. It's a really big subject, so it's impossible to cover all the bases here. This question comes up a lot (about 5 minutes after you can't find something you're looking for in freebies..;), so stand by for more specific answers.

PhilC has made a CD that covers the ins and outs of clothesmaking for Poser. From the actual modeling and to fitting it to a character.

It's a highly recommended buy :)

Unfortunately, there is absolutely no way I can afford something like that. I highly doubt anyway that most modellers bought this. Basically, there has got to be a more public resource than this...

the modellers learnt on their own, by trial and error, from first principles. little or none of this stuff is obvious or intuitive. some of it is covered in manuals and books, like Phil's CD or deecey's book. they learnt how to do it by trying everything available to them in their modelling software, and by participating in forums like this, where people are available to answer specific questions and to test their products for potential flaws.

I have a lot of links to tutorials on my site. Check out and try the tutorials for the modeling program that you are using. This will help you learn the features and functions of the program. I also have links for Poser, setting up props, characters, uv mapping, etc.

I bought PhilC's tutorial CD as well as "Secrets of Figure Creation with Poser 5" - and I've been known to do modelling on ocassion, for Poser even. ;)

If you really like slugging it out by trial and error, then so be it.  But best to have good resources, tutorials, and a place to receive active assistance (forums like this) as well.  Be aware that every 3D modelling app (3DSMax, Maya, LW, C4D, Wings, Hex, Shade, ........) has its issues with Poser in one way or another.  Most of these are illuminated in this and other forums or in tutorials specific to a particular app.  And figure setup is about as difficult as rigging and skinning in any other 3D app.  If you have a spare year ot two, trial and error is just for you.
