Subject: Windows 64bit?

BUSHY8996 ( ) posted Fri, 13 October 2006 at 3:22 PM · edited Fri, 16 August 2024 at 3:48 PM

Can anyone confirm that it Windows Vista that uses 64bit? And if sowhich version should I look to purchase for the use of Vue6 - when released? It would seem that the release date for Vista isn't until 2/2/07 in the UK. If it is Vista that uses 64bit.....are the people that already have this is the beta version?

Thanks,

Bushy

Yes, Vista is 64 bit & 32bit backward compatable - how well that works obviously reamins to be seen.

Yes,  it is still in beta.

My guess is that Vista will have both flavors, 32 and 64.  At least the RC's are 2 seperate installs.  I would hope that it will ship with both.

All the hype I've heard is that they've rewritten it for 64bit while still being able to read and use 32bit and even 16bit (like word processing programs, apparently it's one of the reasons you can't have your ystem completely optimized for 64bit computing because supposedly it won't even recognize the 16bit apps) apps.

If you are wondering if you can buy the 64bit version of Vue6 right now (well, when it's released...), while wondering if you have to wait for Vista, you can get the XP 64bit version of Windows. You don't have to wait.

tbird10 ( ) posted Sat, 14 October 2006 at 5:40 AM

Though I wouldn't want to pay for XP64 bit then pay again for Vista64 bit, but you can get Vue6 now and then upgrade to Vista 64 bit when it comes out.

I have had confirmed from e-on that you effectively get both a 32bit and 64bit version of Vue6 (at least for Infinite) for your money and the 'correct' version will automatically be installed (so if you install Vue6I on WinXp it will be a 32 bit version, if you install on XP64 or Vista64 it will be the 64 bit version) so all you need to do is re-install Vue6I once you have upgraded to a 64 bit OS.

That's pretty slick!

Vista will not be out this year, and when it's out, there will be different versions (4 I think), 2 for home use, 2 for pro use. But all versions will be a pain in the a** when it comes to DRM, and I suspect may avi files and mp3, legal or not, will be difficult to use. When I get my 64bit machine (hopefully by the end of the year), I'll go for XP64.  This is a beta alright, but it works absolutely fine.

Anyone know where to find XP64? I'd like to try it (got 4gigs ram) Also 64bit dual core cpus

bruno021 ( ) posted Sat, 14 October 2006 at 2:57 PM

Well, think I got over the hedge on this, apparently, it's only a 180 days demo. Check MS pages for it.

You can get an OEM copy at newegg.com. And XP-64 isn't XP; it is actually Server 2003 with the XP GUI crap pasted on, so you are SMP aware from the get-go. As for Vista.....read the EULA before you buy it, people. Apparently the cheapest versions, the Home and Home Pro, will work with -one- install only. Change any part of your hardware that breaks the hash code they used to enable it, and you will be required to buy a new liscence to stay legal (as in no chip upgrade, no mobo change out, possibly no HDD replacement). DRM crapola isn't the only reason to wait and see......

Hmmmmm.  These things will at least require some looking into.  I'll be curious to see what they do.

Thanks guys - just one more question......Window xp 64bit or Vista?

svdl ( ) posted Sun, 15 October 2006 at 3:49 PM

I tried XP64bit over a year ago - works fine on an Athlon64 system. 32 bit apps ran just as stable and fast (or unstable and slow, depending on the app) as on XP 32 bit. The user interface is identical to the standard WinXP.

I also tried Vista RC1. Not entirely happy about it, had to search for options left and right, not unlike a Mac. Haven't found an option yet to let it revert to the clean Win2000 look.

I'd go for XP64. None of that DRM crap, a sleeker UI, and full 64bit functionality.

Vista RC2 can be downloaded from the MicroSoft site.  It will run until July 2007.  Supposedly, RC2 will be the shipping version that will go to corporate accounts next month and be available to us lesser mortals in January.  Again - Supposedly.

It doesn't measure up to the hype, IMO.  Does anything?  I've removed it primarily due to the lack of bells and whistles that aren't available in 64 bit format.  You guys won't go wrong by logging into your motherboard and video card mfg sites and see if the gadgets you use are available.  I like to monitor heat and fans.  No can do with the Asus board and video card I use now.  There may be a work around for this problem.  I prefer to wait for the Asus "stuff".   Drivers of various types may be a problem too.  I think I'll wait for SP2  :-)

I just built a new machine and put XP64 on it.  Only thing I couldn't find a driver for was my printer which is three years old.  I'm still running a 32 bit machine also so that's no problem.  XP64 runs just fine and Vue5Infinite is humming right along.  Haven't had enough time to run any timing tests, but it uses every bit of memory it can and is having no problems.

Not looking to switch to Vista right now - my feeling is that XP64 will do what I want and will be a lot leaner than Vista.

Read an article on CNET this morning that RC-2 has a few problems and is missing a few things.  Feeling was that there might be an RC-3

Another stupid question... If I buy XP64 is it a full version without the time limit?

Just curious, as some of the priced I've seen are quite small.

lingrif ( ) posted Tue, 17 October 2006 at 6:33 PM

It's a regular Windows version.  No time limit.  The OEM version is quite reasonable.  Another good reason to try this version.  Vista isn't going to be cheap.

So when is XP64Bit out? As I have asked about XP64bit at PCWorld here in the UK and it was them that advised Vista will be 64bit - but they did not seem to know anything about XP64bit.

I am using Windows XP Pro at the moment - but want to switch to 64bit, therefore what do I need to be looking for interms of the name ie Windows XP64bit? and do I need to buy the Pro version for the best results with both Poser and Vue6-when released?

Thanks again for your comments

Well...   here is the direct link to newegg.com - I don't know if they ship to the UK. But then....  you should be able to find it "over there" as well. XP64 bit has been out for quite some time - more than a year I believe - and it's been running here (on four machines - soon to be six) without a hitch. Love it!

One more question, should I just install XP64 over my 32bit OS, or do I need to put it on else where, as in a dual boot system or something?

megalodon ( ) posted Sat, 21 October 2006 at 2:46 PM

I've only had XP64 on our systems here, but I know for a fact that you CAN have a dual boot system. If you still need a 32bit system for some of your programs, then obviously dual boot will be your best bet. If you don't, I would format your harddrive and start with a completely clean install.

Good Luck!

I forgot to ask - do you need a P4 Dual Processor inorder to use XP or Vista 64bit?

megalodon ( ) posted Mon, 23 October 2006 at 2:12 PM

The only thing (as far as I am aware) that you need to run XP64 or Vista 64 is a 64bit processor. I know that AMDs have no problem, though I think that the Intel Itanium processors are NOT acceptable. I am not familiar enough with that particular "problem" so if you have an Itanium you should research further.

Have any of you that use XP64bit NOT being able to use the internet or email? I've tried everything I can think of and it just doesn't seem to let me use them. Guess it's a driver issue.

I just purchased a new Dell Computer with 2 GB RAM and an Intel Duo Core 2,13 Ghz. However, the only OS that was available while configuring my PC was Windows XP Media Center Edition 2005.

Do I need to buy XP 64 Bit for full utilization of my Processor or is the Media Center Edition fine, too?

lingrif ( ) posted Fri, 27 October 2006 at 6:11 PM

Brian - No problems with email or internet.  Doubt if it's a driver issue - I'd look toward how your security software is installed to be sure that nothing is blocking the ports you need.  I have a 32-bit machine and a 64-bit machine networked together using a router with no problem.  Also, check the Windows firewall.  It may be blocking everything.

lingrif ( ) posted Fri, 27 October 2006 at 6:13 PM

Daniel, Media Center should run your processor just fine.  The only thing about 64-bit is that it will utilize more memory.  With 2GB, there should be no difference.  On my 64-bit, I have 4GB and it utilizes all of it.

Hi lingrif,

thanks for your answer 😄 . I googled a lot but I could not find any information about that.

So maybe someday I'll buy two more Gigabyte of RAM, and then I'll be upgrading to XP 64 Bit (or Vista probably...)

lingrif ( ) posted Sat, 28 October 2006 at 8:56 AM

I find that running WinXP(32) with 4-GB of memory - Vue grabs 2GB and Windows takes the remaining 1GB.  The 4th GB is not recognized by the system.  But it is nice to give Vue the full 2 GB.

I am running this on a 64-bit capable motherboard and processor which I think makes the difference.

Hmmm, got a strange problem with my Vue5 Infinite I installed last night it worked fine then. Now it's asking me for some code off of the Vue5 app cd. It doesn't find any (of course) anyone know a qucik fix for this?

Also sad to say it seems xp64 messed up my PC bigtime, won't give me the chance to connect to use email or internet. Sometimes it won't even boot correctly. says everything is working properly. Geesh that one gets me quite angry......

Unfortunately....   I never have a dual boot system and I always reformat and install a new version of M$ Windows fresh - too many problems upgrading over an existing version. If it was me, I would end up reformatting and then creating a completely fresh dual boot system. A little more info would also probably help the people here to maybe find the problem.

I assume that you put XP64 on a different drive/partition? Are the network drivers working? Can you use a network cable and connect directly to your router. Or are you on dial-up?
