Subject: Figured out how to get Bryce mats out and into vue..

Lyne ( ) posted Mon, 02 October 2006 at 5:28 PM · edited Sat, 11 January 2025 at 3:45 AM

and made some "how to" screen caps that I can put up on my web site, if anyone is interested...I spent a lot of $$ on the great Bryce "seriously real" mats at DAZ when I was sooo frustrated with vue water...well, now that I am getting a handle on Vue's water AND will get Vue 6, I am going to jump the Bryce ship for good...but before I do, I want to convert some of my materials into a form I can use in vue! :) I did one and it worked nicely.. it's kinda like making a high res photo-pic in Bryce and then using it on a Vue terrain, and saving as a vue mat.... will be tedious but just have to save some of the $$ I spent on Bryce content before I leave it behind.... of course I can't share the mats, but I can show anyone how if there is interest... :)

The other reason I am leaving Bryce for good is because now the pass through DS-Bryce plug in does not work anymore...the part where DS reads a Poser SIX pz3....NOT! So that clinched it! (and don't ask....I did everything possible to get it to work (DS) and even the DS forum at DAZ could not solve the problem...they may not want to, since DS is their program instead of Poser... whatever...I am sticking with Poser and Vue from here on in....(well with a smattering of joyous use of ArtMatic Voyager, but that is another forum!)  :)

I couldn't find the screen grabs on your site, so this is what I do to get procedurals out of Vue.  I render them out on a cube or flatted terrain - render out at 512x512 up to 4000x4000 depending on my needs.  I take the render into PSP or Texture Maker(any other paint program will do) and save as jpg in order  to make them seamless.  Of course water/glass/some metals will need tweaking in other apps. But does not take long to manipulate at all :)

This technique could be used for all 3d apps.

As to Bryce, only reason I'm upgrading to 6 is to be able to get all my obps that were made in Bryce, tired of using alphas.  The Bryce community(especially at 3dc) have always been very generous in their freebies & all very well made, so I look forward to able to get them out for use elsewhere :).....Now to wait & see exactly well that part of the upgrade plays out ;)

I'd love to see them!  I have a lot Bryce mats bought over the years and now, I rarely use Bryce.

Thanks for sharing!

I also have some mats for Bryce, but use now only Vue. I would appreciate a link to your site to get the information.

Thanks in advance.

I have the screen caps MADE but I have not done the web pages to show the process I figured out...I did test my first one IN VUE and like the results....so I WILL make the pages... but right now I am just devistated at the loss of my Travis cat and so focused on him, posting about him etc... sorry... I will make a big note to DO the screen cap pages so I don't forget when I feel better, okay?

thanks.

That's totally understandable Lyne - take all the time you need, we and Vue will still be here for a long time so there's no rush .....

I hope this is better than Bryce2Vue.  I almost bought an expensive MAC, just to use it, because sombody recommended it.

...The day of the $100 G3 has come a long way, so I'm also very interested to see the screenshots!

Lyne ( ) posted Tue, 10 October 2006 at 8:25 PM

I don't know anything about that (link you provided) but my procedure to get the materials out of one program into another is simply a matter of rendering them and a certain manner in saving the high quality image to use as a material in Vue.

My grief has hit me even harder than I was prepared for but I will eventually get the screen captures up on my web site.

So sorry to hear of your loss.

I'm just getting used to having a Cat around the house, her name is Proda.  She was hit by a car in front of an animal hospital and lost her home.

Maybe now is the time to be thinking Kittens?

Lynn>First off...Very sorry for your loss...Now, Easy solution for texture question...

Select the part that contains the material you want to export.

Click on M and in the material editor go to load a texture.

Under each square where you can see the original texture there is a link to Copy.

Copy and paste in your graphics program..

It really works...Posted over at Daz by France...

gillbrooks ( ) posted Fri, 13 October 2006 at 4:47 AM

Doesn't work for me - my paste buttons are greyed out  :(

ellocolobo ( ) posted Fri, 13 October 2006 at 11:20 AM

Ok..After you click the "M" button..

Procede as if you are going to load a picture

Press the "p" button and then the one right above it..That will open the picture lab

Then select the texture you want..

THEN, under the first box it says "Copy"..

Press "Copy" and then go to your Photoshop and "Paste"..

It took me a few tries to figure out the combination but it really does work..Still problems, let me know...:)

gillbrooks ( ) posted Fri, 13 October 2006 at 12:32 PM

Ah yes, I wasn't going far enough in - I was copying on the window after hitting the m.

But still, this only works on textures using pictures - not procedural.  On JBA Seriously Real Crack 9 as an example - it's all procedural so that method doesn't work.

Handy for others though - I never thought of that LOL! Thanks

What that sounds like an interesting solution but is the material in a high enough resolution to be used in Vue?

What I was doing was bringing my terrain up flat to the camera, and rendering to disk at 150 dpi to get a really high quality material.

And as I reread the post above this one I think I'll go ahead with my tutorial because I am planning on using my method to get all of the "seriously real" Bryce materials that are so beautiful over to Vue... :)

And by the way since I am feeling better and my gallery CSS does not work right now I'm going to go to work on getting those screen captures posted on my site and I'll return here with the url when the pages are ready.

Close to the same as I described above what I was doing to get mats out of Vue - Only I use a cube & enlarge & render out & then make seamless in Texture maker.

These methods will work out of any program that use procedurals :)

Lyne ( ) posted Wed, 18 October 2006 at 11:47 PM

I wonder what those bryce mats will do in BRYCE 6? I just got it for the $6...how could I not? but will not be using it....just will archive "in case" .... and will continue using my method to get my favorite mats OUT of 5....while waiting for vue 6! :)

$6?  What did you get for$6?

Lyne ( ) posted Thu, 19 October 2006 at 9:44 PM

Bryce 6 - software!! I am a PC member there, so DAZ is giving away the new version 6 to members for $6...who am I to pass it up even if I just archive it! :))

Lyne ( ) posted Fri, 20 October 2006 at 11:13 PM

PS....reading about all the Bryce 6 bugs over at DAZ...I am deleting the b6 files and just keeping my registered status in case I ever want it...but from the look of the forums over there and the continued incompatibility with poser 6, vue 5..and vue 6 have NO competition in my opinion! :)

Bea ( ) posted Sun, 22 October 2006 at 8:03 PM

Lyne, there are not really serious bugs in Bryce 6 - or none that would stop people using it. give it a try - there are some new materials in there as well and you might enjoy it :)

Lyne ( ) posted Mon, 23 October 2006 at 2:58 PM

sorry going to become a dedicated vue person from now on....just can't do it all in bryce... the vegitation, you know.... but thanks for the head's up, could always get it again in the future ....

diolma ( ) posted Mon, 23 October 2006 at 4:21 PM

This thread reminds me of something I've been doing for a while now, on and off...

I prefer Bryce's terrain creation facilities to that of Vue ('cos I know it better, probably), but prefer Vue's materials and rendering.  So what I've been doing recently is:

  • Create terrain in Bryce.
  • Edit it (in whatever way I want to do).
  • Go to top view, and do a height render. Save the result as an image.
  • Open Vue, load a terrain, apply the saved height-map as a "Picture" in the terrain editor....

Vue seems to give somewhat smoother results than Bryce, but that may be a resolution issue. Sometimes the vertical scale needs to be adjusted (but that's probably 'cos of my current settings), but it works:-)) - same terrain transferred from Bryce to Vue.
Textures are another matter altogether, (see above posts for help with that), but then I'm more comfortable with Vue's texture function editor than with Bryce's DTI...

Just thought I'd put an oar in the water (there's more than one way to use the 2 apps together..)

Cheers,
Diolma

Interesting...  That's the thing I'll miss about Bryce-I was always more comfortable with its terrain editor.  I used to literally build things with it, but I just can't keep everything on my computer especially with Vue and poser taking over hard drive space.
