It is my belief that all of us here in the Bryce Forum are split into 4 groups.

1, Bryce Gurus - Those that know everything there is to know about Bryce. (That would be Rochr.)
2, Bryce Cardinals - Those who believe there is only one true app. (Guess who fits that bill?)
3, Bryce Newbies - Those who know very little about Bryce (But are nice people who want to learn)
4, Heretics - Those that think Bryce is just a landscaper and that there are other apps. (Spawn of Satan who will be damned for all time.)

Where do you fit in?

I'm:

5, Occasional Bryce User - Those who use Bryce only every now and then, acknowledge that it's a powerful tool that can accomplish a number of things, know how to use it, but use a variety of other programs with or without Bryce when doing their work.

danamo ( ) posted Thu, 26 April 2007 at 4:43 PM

Ahem, well, since I am a self-admitted "heretic" and I never looked so great in that garish shade of red that Cardinals favor(besides, those carmine satin undies feel weird!) I guess I could be pigeon-holed into category 4. Even though I know quite a lot about Bryce, I would never have the hubris or self-delusional belief that I belong in category 1. I have built many models using only Bryce and made numerous textures and animations in Bryce which I have used in other "heretical apps". I don't think that Bryce is "just a landscaper". I know it is capable of much more. I do however cheerfully adopt any app which will make my workflow easier and give me good results. I never quite understood how SILO was recognized as an approved app by his Eminence, and Wings was not. Could it be that he could wrap his head around the former, and not the latter? Perhaps Cardinal TheBryster gets "kickbacks" from Nevercenter.
Yes, you can call me a heretic, but never a hypocrite. ;-P

  1. Heretic
I think Bryce is far more than just a landscaper; but has limitations that cannot be overcome with the current version of the app.

I will use whatever tool is best suited to do any given job.

I'm a little of 2 and of 4....   All I use is Bryce for all my renders....    but I do little modeling in Bryce. all my modeling is in Rhino...  and I certainly do not know all that there is about Bryce..

Greetings again.

Oh I'm not sure how to classify myself. I wrote this big explaination, but it comes down to this: I love Bryce, it's my only renderer. I'm not a newbie. I'm amazed how much there is to learn with it. My models tend to be hybrids between a CAD package (SolidWorks, which was reviewed in issue 89 (I think) of 3DWorld magazine) and Bryce. I'll do a model segment in Solidworks then finish it in Bryce. But Bryce is my favorite and primary 3D app.

I wouldn't mind being a cardinal. I love Bryce enough, yet my motto is "let the computer do the work" meaning use tools to get the job done. Yet because I love Bryce a lot I'm always thinking how to render it in Bryce, or how to finish it in Bryce. Bryce Bryce all the way.

So I guess this anthropomorphic being could be listed as 6? Someone who loves Bryce, promotes it, use other software occationally to suppliment Bryce, yet does not use the heresy software.

Does this make sense?  I wouldn't mind the red robes of a cardinal... I shall become known as The Red Death.... ;-)

RodsArt ( ) posted Thu, 26 April 2007 at 6:53 PM

Yes, like many of you I have this steel ball implanted in my forehead with little arrows on it, so I'm not sure if a category even exists for that because I occasionally push it back in under the skin so I'm not cross-eyed and can see in 2-D(PS).

Maybe a closet-Heretic??

ummm... I started with Bryce, been using it for years, its my favourite app and I can't see anything replacing it. I don't consider myself a newbie, but I still learn something new every day. Everything finishes up in Bryce, one way or another, but I'm also definitely a heretic, being a Wings and GeoControl user (is GeoControl heresy? - I'm not sure). On the other hand I've used Booleans to do diagrams for university projects. So... I dunno.

I use Bryce for 100% of my renders, but I just can't help playing around with really old apps like Adobe Dimensions (a vector based 3d prog) and Ray Dream Studio (where most of my modeling is done). so....does this make me an old outdated heretic, or what!

Senor Most Honored Cardinal of the Track Ball with arrows order,

It has come to may attention that there is a number of parish members who fear not your wrath and comfy chair.  Because of your hesitant use of rack and irons your grip may be loosening.  The evils and sins outside Brycedom draws many.  I must confess I have been drawn to the dark side.  I now occassionally use crayons.  Forgive me.

And I ain't gonna mention other apps... edges away from the comfy chair.

**I do not know  where I fit in here.  I do my modeling in other apps, but I always come back to Bryce for the scene setup and render.  I model in Rhino, but their flagship rendering engine, Flamingo, which costs twice as much as Bryce, is a pile of stinking crap.  I can spend 6 intense and frustrating hours trying to get a texture right and then switch over to Bryce and have it in 5 minutes or less.  And Flamingo will not animate, do landscapes, water, or clouds.   Makes me wonder why people use it.

I always recommend Bryce to folks over in the Rhino forum.**

Heritics you say. Well just because I use other apps. I suggest a new catagory. Original bryce user the anchients. Those who used Bryce 1.0 on a 6800 mac when it first came out. Those who were using Bryce in the glory days of yore. All this talk of heritics unless you used Bryce 1.0 must cease. We rendered a non reflective sphere on a flat plane in 6 hours at 400x400 and we liked it. Back before Bryce would import anything import models what a feature for the soft. No metaballs no imports and we thought it was great.

Lol, that was a while ago, wasn't it? I didn't start with Bryce until .ver2. You know the one; the boxcover art was Eric Wenger's beautiful lake scene with the Red Japanese Torii gate?. Anyway, we're just having fun here. I'm feeling good knowing that I'm not alone in wanting to import an occasional mesh model, my own, or someone else's, into my Bryce scenes.  Besides, if we really wanted to be technical we'd have to create sub-categories for the people who are pro, or con, in the matter of adding postwork, on both sides of the "Cardinal v.s.Heretic"debate,lol. I suspect there are more postwork users in the Heretic camp, but I could be wrong. Come to think of it, Cardinal TheBryster himself has admitted to displaying his Bryce postwork in public. *low, shocked murmur issues from the crowd!

ROTFL, I started with bryce 2, that was a long time ago......

I think post work or not depends on two things mainly

a) whether you're any good at it (thinking Rochr here :) )
and
b) if you animate, in which case post work is a bad idea.
