Several of you guys and gals have asked to make a hose for the victorian shoe. I whipped up something based on a few pics, but I'm having a tough time. The reference pics are scarce. Here's what I have so far. Please let me know what needs changing or adjusting, if it's anything close to what you had in mind or any other input you'd like to make :)

Hi. Those look great!

My question is should the tips of the clothe emerging from the knot be so pointy as opposed to round? Should the knot be centered on the upper cuff? Should the cuff be wider? I think the sytem worked like a ribbon of cloth passed through a button hole in a cuff like used as is the draw sting on the waist of modern exersize pants. That or a garter sleve with the ribbon it it that was placed under the rolled up top of the stocking I think being more common. I wish we could find good references!

Has an image of this standard "split" underware but no hose!

Yeah, it's tough finding a good image, showing how they worked. I remember you mentioning something of a 'working class style' which seems to look more like the 17th-ish century boot hose. Looks like they tied it with a ribbon, in some cases with handkerchief, and folded over the edge.

Then the more modern ones of Edwardian time seem to have been tied with lace ribbons and garters.

well, in an era where they even put covers on piano legs, pictures might be scarce. Although, and I hate to admit it, there was a lively postcard industry during the Civil War of prawnography (you know what I mean..;), which is why they passed laws against sending such through the mails. You could probably find a lot of reference pics that way..I'm sure they're out there somewhere..;)

Oooh ! I love those stockings, Conniecat8 !! Those are very unique. You're doing superb work

kimber89 ( ) posted Sat, 02 June 2007 at 11:48 PM

They look great but wrong era/period. Victorian hose/socks go up over the knee or so I've seen in those Victorian "naughty" photographs.

A member of deviantART has old/vintage nude photos for image reference, some of the women are wearing stockings with boots.
You could try looking at them but I don't think Rendo will allow a direct link but look up GentlemansClubStock.

I had forgotten about the handkerchief tie... that would have the pointy corners. Those images at the link you give do match up for lower class images I have seen. Kimber89 is absolutly correct in terms of middle-class women according to my historian friend while bellow the knee was taudry but representative of lower class wear. I have seen a number of images of poor women where no ribbon or garter is used but the top of the hose is pulled tight, the excess being rolled in a knot and tucked under the rolled down top. Closest modern equivalent is how dancers will pull the bottom of a shirt tight, twist the excess in a knot and roll it in the lower edge of the shirt. Can't find an image of that either.

Those shoes are a tour de force!

Conniekat8 - Love the idea of what you're doing here. I don't know exactly how they should look but I'm sure howwever close you get they'll look brilliant!

surreality ( ) posted Sun, 03 June 2007 at 3:34 AM

There's a livejournal community that specializes in vintage pin-up images and Victorian nudie postcards that might be handy for this. I'll see if I can find anything there if you like -- but honestly, those look wonderful. Most styles did go up over the knee, yes, but I half-remember seeing some like these also, though they may be slightly later (or earlier... my costume history brain is on vacation this week).

Wow, you guys thanks for the interest and the wonderful research tips.
The more I look around, the more I get perplexed about whether I should go with the 'lower class' style, whic are the ones tied with handkerchief, and below the knee, to sort of fit bloomers, or working class shorts...
Or if I should go with classier, more fashionable over the kenn hose held by a garter...
(or perhaps both)
Seems to me that I should go with the classier style to fit the boots, and make the 'working class male' type for Apollo, to fit the blacksmith apron I wanna make for him!

@momodot, what do you think about the above? I'm sort of trying to follow up on things you were interested in?

@cedarwolf - I'm making stockings right now to fit the Victorian shoe freebie I just released. In case you missed it, you can find it here:  http://www.renderosity.com/mod/freestuff/index.php?username=Conniekat8

Hi Connie, what you are thinking makes sense to me. I like the below the knee for the shape and the way it breaks up the pattern of the leg compositionally but for accuracy with your shoe I think you should go above the knee. I would appreciate a copy of the bellow the knee to try with the RAF shoes I bought at the shop to see if I can replicate that look in the image of the woman turned away that I posted and that was cropped so it looked like a male on account of the low heel on the shoe. Since long before Poser I have always tried to break the human form into interesting patterns using partial clothing.... I am very influenced by Egon Schiele.

I found an example of a pull-string closure on this Alice underware for Posette by ISO. I think it is simmilar to how the stockings worked but they had a ribbon rather than the string. I wonder if these pants can be made into period split-pants.

Conniekat8 ( ) posted Mon, 18 June 2007 at 4:16 PM

I'm not sure if the pants could be made into split pants without looking at the obj itself, and how it's rigged in Poser.  Pants like shouldn't take too long to model :)
On the stockings (which I'm texturing at the moment) I want to make the bow and handkerchiefs in a picture as a separate piece, so it can be turned off, and add a little ribbon like bow, so you can have both ways of tying them.

I have thought that the ideal of sexual dimorphism excededs the reality of it. I once tried demonstrating that here by editing a picture of George W Bush by changing only his dress and hair and yet he made a pretty convincing woman. I think people may take their cues from hair and clothing more than they realize. Remember the faux dude in the movie Liquid Sky? This lady here shall be soon deleted by a moderator I suppose unless we can get lisensing from the estate of the photographer.

Conniekat8 ( ) posted Fri, 22 June 2007 at 2:20 PM

Yeah... Not too long ago I was doing some reading where they were describing how what we find sexy and attractive is rather significantly molded by social influences.

I'm planning on making a thigh-high version too.. eventually.

The actual pair will fit snugly. I modelled it to fit, but yesterday when I imported things to see how it all fit together, I accidentally shifted something... Being in a hurry instead of redoing it, I just made quick fix and made V3's legs skinnier.
You guys caught me faking it! Sheesh, tough crowd! (LOL - just kidding)

I like the idea of the thigh high version as well. I know this is a silly question, but will they be exactly the same but higher?

Conniekat8 ( ) posted Mon, 23 July 2007 at 12:12 PM

Um, I hadn't given it that much thought yet. I think with a thigh higs, I should make a garter belt type tie.
On the short one I was going by a picture that showed it tied with a handkerchief. I think I'l make it so the handkerchied can be turned off. Same with the bow, that way people can get a few slightly different looks.

Sounds like I need to make an above the knee pair, and a thigh high pair, with couple of different type ties....

The more I end up thinking about these things, the more elaborate they become.... I like it, but, it pushes the release date farther out too... :(  I hope you guys don't mind waiting???

I would imagine ribbon might have been used to hold them up prior to the use of rolled garters (the stocking would roll around the garter as the garter was rolled down the leg). I suspect the rolled garter was mostly used on thigh high stockings.

You certainly do excellent quality work Conniekat!

I admit that I'm a big fan of short boots & there's just something about your boots Connie that appeal to me. I think it's because they have the style that would look good in some many different kinds of textures.

Thank You, but I can't take all the credit! Momodot picked a really classic look... I just modelled it. I guess there's a reason it's a classic boot shape :)
I can't seem to get away from the two color look.  That brown looks like it's made of copper :)
I think I'll have to make some sort of a still life with the boots.
