Subject: Runtime folders question

Holli ( ) posted Sun, 16 September 2007 at 7:42 AM · edited Mon, 23 December 2024 at 11:58 AM

Hello
since a few Versions it is possible to add additional runtime-folder to Poser!
I think it is a very useful feature to keep things in order.

But every time I choose an item that is not in the main runtime I have to tell Poser exactly where the files (obj and jpg) are.
This there no way around it?

Poser knows where the additional runtime folders is and Poser should know if I choose an item from the main runtime or from another runtime.

Why doesn't Poser find things by himself?

BeyondVR ( ) posted Sun, 16 September 2007 at 7:56 AM

I don't really remember why I do it this way, but I have always kept those files in the original runtime.  My extra runtimes have only the library files, character, pose, etc.  I use Poser 6, and it has never asked for a file.

I seem to remember that P5 needed the !DAZ folders in each runtime, but P6 doesn't care about that.  Someone may be able to help you further if you say which version you are using.  Sorry I could not be of more help.

John

It sounds like the files you're accessing don't have the full file path written in the CR2 or MAT files. You could try fixing these with an editor like CRPro or RuntimeRepair (both available here in the marketplace).

Also are you using Poser 7? Make sure you have search set to "Deep search" in Preferences. (Edit>General Preferences>Library>File Search.)

Hello Holli,

You might try doing this and see if it helps straighten things out.

  1. Load the object (or figure) that has a "problem"

  2. Load (as necessary) the additional files required.

... When the object/figure is loaded properly in Poser ...

  1. Select the "Runtime" where you want the object/figure to be saved.

  2. (re)Save the object/figure to the Library.

This "should" correct any path problems that might be associated with the object/figure.

Is it possible that you have named your actual runtime something other than just "runtime"?  For example "V3 Runtime".

Have you named the actual runtime folder something like "V3 Runtime" and then placed the contents directly into that so that the path is as follows?

V3 Runtime Geometries
V3 Runtime Textures
V3 Runtime Libraries

If so that is the problem. The correct path for the above example would be as follows:

V3 Runtime Runtime Geometries
V3 Runtime Runtime Textures
V3 Runtime Runtime Libraries

When you link the runtime to Poser you browse to the folder called "V3 Runtime" and Poser will look inside that folder for it's own "Runtime" folder.

Here is a link to a tutorial on using multiple runtimes.

http://forum.daz3d.com/viewtopic.php?t=9060&start=0

http://www.drgeep.com/p5/run/run.htm

Another tip is to never just unzip or install anything directly to your runtime. Always unzip or install to a separate folder. Then browse through the folder to have a look at the structure of where things are going and make sure that it's in "proper runtime structure" so that when you move it to the runtime, they get into the proper folders.

You could also consider a single runtime with sub folders, that way Poser doesn't have to go looking all over the place!

It just dawned on me.

Did you by chance rearrange the files and folders inside the geometries and textures folders?

The folders/files inside the actual "Libraries" folders (ie; camera, character, pose, props etc) can be rearranged, but the folders and files in the geometries and textures folders should be left wherever they land.

If you have moved the geometry and texture folders/files around, then you will either need to reinstall poser content from scratch again, or use something like Correct Reference to remake the paths for poser.

Acadia is right!
My additiional runtimes are indeed just like
V3 Runtime Geometries
and not like
V3 Runtime Runtime Geometries

Is that the problem? I will try to change that.
The strange thing is Poser displays all that stuff from the new rumtime libary but is unable to load or find any of the contents.

Is that the problem?

Yes, that is the problem :)

If you have a look at your main Curious Labs folder you will see that inside it is a folder called "Poser <version#>"  and inside that is a folder called "Runtime" which contains a bunch of sub folders.

So you need to have a similar set up.   Just open the folder called "V3 Runtime"  and create a new folder in there called "Runtime" and move your geometries, textures and libraries folders into it and you should be all set :)

When you link to the folder inside Poser, link to the  folder called "V3 Runtime". Poser will search it and find its usual "Runtime" folder and all of the files.

The folder that you have your actual "Runtime" in can be named anything you want. It doesn't have to have the word runtime in it.  For example I have an external runtime called "Props", the path for it is:

D: Poser Runtimes Props Runtime Geometries
D: Poser Runtimes Props Runtime Textures
D: Poser Runtimes Props Runtime Libraries

When I linked that runtime to Poser I browsed for the "Props" folder and not the folder called "runtime" that is inside of it.

What's that? ... Can't read the print? ... Just click on the image and everything will be clear. 😄

NOTE :  You MUST have the (new runtime) "folder" BEFORE you can add it in Poser.

Thanks for all the pictures. Now one of mine .. my runtime only ... sorry This is what it looks like. Poser displays all the content correcty after I add a new runtime. That tells my things are basicly fine. But if I try to load something it always asks my for the right files.

I have Poser 7 and I have Deep Scan enabled. I had this problem already with Poser 6.

I've not seen it set up in that particular way before, but it looks like a nightmare to navigate! [LOL].
Sorry!
I dare say others will say different!
I find a single runtime with sub folders much easier!

As geep says, I have sub folders in my "Hair" folder for [V4 hair], [V3 hair], [A3 hair], [Mixed peeps hair] etc. Navigation is easy via the small black triangle.
Initial loading time of the programme may be increased by a small amount but it's not excessive and once it's loaded it runs just as fast as ever and IMVHO navigating sub folders is quicker.
And yes I have tried multiples!!

Dizzi ( ) posted Wed, 19 September 2007 at 1:09 AM

References in the files are usually starting with :runtime: and that means a folder with the name "runtime" not the Poser runtime. A correctly build Poser runtime consists of a folder that gives the runtime its name. Like the default runtimes "Poser 7" or "Download", which then have a folder called runtime inside. Poser itself cannot create a correct runtime structure that 99% of the content on the market (and itself) uses. It'll just not create the folder "runtime". (And it's been like that forever, no matter how often it's reported - but it got an annotation in the manual now.) So name your folder "Runtime V4" "V4" only and create a folder "runtime" inside that, and move the libraries, geometries etc. inside that "runtime" folder. V4->runtime->libraries V4->runtime->geometries I'd also suggest to not create runtimes inside of other runtimes, as Poser is then too stupid to save the correct path when saving to the libraries. And you also risk to lose all runtimes when there's another installer flaw...

I would agree with what everyone is saying as well Dizzi has sort of what I have how I have mine setup. I have several external runtimes, but I think 2 of your major problems is having runtimes within your main Poser runtime as well as having your runtime have an additional name in it like Runtime V4.

How I have mine external ones I have the millennium people (V3,V4,M3,L3 etc) together, others like (A3, G2, Apollo etc), Structures, Vehicles, Animals, Misc stuff, Backgrounds & Enviroments, Weapons. Those are the main titles then inside is the runtime like Dizzi was saying.

One thing that Acadia you say here about moving things around in the Geometry and Texture folders I disagree with cause when I download something I always put things where I want them in the Geometry and Texture folders within my runtimes and don't have a problem usually. For instance, say I downloaded a morph for V4 that came with a skin texture. I actually have in my texture folder it broken down to a folder for skin texturesmale or femalemill or other then which character, so if there is an issue or if I want to experiment with the texture I can easily find it. Same with hair and clothes.Once in a while there is an issue where Poser can't find something on its own, but very rarely and when it does come up I know exactly where it is.

Holli ( ) posted Wed, 19 September 2007 at 2:36 PM

First of all another question : How do I remove a runtime?
This the past there was some XML file I could edit but I don't see it anymore.

Having different runtimes instead of subfolders make things easy to install. I just drop the content of a zip-file into a runtime and it is done.
Sometimes packages contains empty folders. That may be the reson I have an hair folder in my V4 runtime even when there is nothing in it.

geep ( ) posted Wed, 19 September 2007 at 7:22 PM

Remove a runtime? ...
Simple, just select it and click the minus (-) sign at the bottom of the Library.

That looks very confusing.

Here is my list of runtimes. I have them saved on my partitioned D: drive totally separate and apart from my Poser program which is on my C: drive.

Notice how I have all of my external runtimes in a folder called "Poser Runtimes" and that each runtime inside just has a name that I can relate too and no "runtime" word in it? I reserve the word "Runtime" for the actual runtime folder inside each one.

Here is the top level of my "Angels and Faeries" runtime.

The "Runtime" folder you see contains the standard geometries, textures and libraries folders.

The "3D Object" folder you see are for files that I find that are in .3ds or .obj format and that I can still use inside Poser, but have to import them instead of accessing them through my poser library inside Poser itself.  Eventually  I convert the .3ds and .obj files to .pp2 ones and save them to my "Props" runtime folder.

The poser.exe files that you see are simply a new text document renamed to be "poser.exe". That gives Poser something to look for in the event I want Poser to search out the runtimes for installation, which I no longer do, but old habits die hard and I like having that fake Poser.exe file in there, hehe
