Subject: Installing your Runtime (free program)

Wow. This rocks! Thanks for the installer and yup computers are for automation and it's nice to see them getting used to make things easier.

Quote - I just found this thread and the programme, so it might be some time before I can use it.
My problem is I have a new PC (Quadcore) which is running Vista 64 bit, and about a hundred million petabytes of runtime to rebuild (at least that's what it seems like after two weeks of slow progress - LOL!)
Unfortunately, Vista 64 bit does not like installers of any kind (ESPECIALLY Victoria 4.1, though V4.0 is okay), so I'm just hoping your programme will help with the simple stuff.
Don't expect me to post back too soon, though, as Vista frequently proves uncooperative.
Frank

ps: And just transferring the Poser 6 and 7 Runtimes from my XP Pro system to the Vista system doesn't work, as Vista uses a different file hierarchy. I tried it and it made such a mess I had to re-install Vista, which took almost five hours just to run the Setup file on the 1 Tb hdd.

 :scared: Five hours???!!? Ouch. If I get another Windows PC I'm going to have it built by a the build-to-order computer shop down the street called Data Doctors. They're a national chain and sell them with WinXP installed.

My brain is just a toy box filled with weird things

I have a ?

You know how you have to add your own runtimes to the list?

IF you have CLOTHING do you have to add a different clothing runtime for each character?

For instance my clothing runtime goes as follows:

C/runtime/CLOTHING. I have subfolders for V3/A3/V4/SP etc.

Do I add each and every character's folder to the runtime list making it like this?

C/runtime/CLOTHING/V3
C/runtime/CLOTHING/A3
C/runtime/CLOTHINGV4
C/runtime/CLOTHING/SP
C/runtime/CLOTHING/etc

EnglishBob ( ) posted Fri, 23 November 2007 at 4:27 PM

Yes. If Poser sees them as separate runtimes, then the Installer will too.

If I may? Poser 4 and earlier used RSR files as library thumbnails, whereas Pro Pack and later use PNGs. Many authors provide both RSR and PNG thumbnails for convenience - but of course you only need to install the type which is relevant to your version of Poser. The rest are just taking up disk space.

I just installed Poser5 - again.  I've got all the Hiro content CD stuff installed before I found this thread, but I also have a lot - really a lot! - of content from Daz - that I had previously installed for DS, now that I've re-intalled Poser5 can I use your installer to install the same stuff for Poser5? Or do I not need to even install all that?

I ask because the runtimes and all that rot are a complete mess for DS, so much of a mess that DS keeps saying - "you have more than 10 folders..warning... blah blah warning blah blah blah..." over and over again.

In fact that's one reason why I've not used DS much - because it's such a hassle trying to find something it needs when I want to use a model, prop or pose etc, so much of a hassle that I usually just have to give up and forget it.

I think having so many folders called "content" or "content this" in so many different locations that makes it so maddening.  And if the computer doesn't know what it did with the stuff when it installed it, there's no way on earth I can ever know.

So is this what your program gets rid of?  The mess?

It would be so cool if something did.

It certainly would be cool if something did!

I'm afraid this program is not the tool though (for getting rid of mess). In fact, I don;t think ther IS a tool for getting rid of runtime mess. This program will however help you install 95% of your stuff into nicely names runtimes. If you are going back to Poser and want to start afresh then zap the D|S folders completely and segergate your content into figures (V3, V4 animals etc) and then within that into clothes, shoes, hair etc). Then, make a well ordered (short named too) list of the runtimes you want eg

c:runtimesV3Shoes
c:runtimesV3Hair
c:runtimesV3Clothes
c:runtimesV3Char-morphs
c:runtimesV3poses
.
.
.
c:runtimesV4Shoes
c:runtimesV4Hair
c:runtimesV4Clothes
c:runtimesV4Char-morphs
c:runtimesV4poses
.
.
.
c:runtimesprops
c:runtimeslights

Put this into the runtimes.txt file in the installer folder.

Take each category of "things" eg all your install files for poses for V4. Put thim into the install files folder and run the program specifitying the c:runtimesv4poses folder as the target.

This will install all those files (the poses for V4) into the V4Poses runtime.

Repeat the process for each category of content.

Finally, start poser and add all the runtimes into the library.

You may wish to look at the excellent "Advanced Library" http://neocron.lunarpages.com/library/ program to further subcategorise your content. This can help you build a virtual structure on top of your runtimes. It is WELL worth a look.

Hope this helps

Sorry, do you mean avast thinks there is a virus? Again, i have checked the file this time against Norton, AVG (free) and NOD32 and none of them feel there is an issue. Perhaps you might ask your antivirus program to send the report to the manufacturer for them to ascertain the fault.

Most useful feature I could think of off the top of my head would be a filter for the directory names that come in many prepackaged runtimes.

For example, the directory name in the character folder might be Micheal's Suit - but the guy who made the runtime for whatever reason decided to put "Mat Suit" for a directory name for the mat files, and used "artist name here" as the directory name in the geometry and texture file location.

This can become quite maddening after a while, you get 10 or 20 directories like this and trying to track everything down becomes a royal pain in the keester, especially those damn material files.  How can anyone possibly remember the name of the original vendor 6 months or a year later so they can track down the geometry or worse yet the original texture file?

If your program could allow you to substitute a single name for all of these different directory names that would be a real godsend.  It would be nice it it would check to see no duplicate names of that same directory already existed, but just the ability to get rid of that stupid "MAT" designation or those godawful "!" signs in front of the directory name would be fantastic.

Nothing worse than trying to find something when it's out of alphabetical order.  Really wish more people would keep that in mind when there packaging this stuff in the first place.

Lol.. ok, rant over...

OH I SO AGREE!!!

Big change though and would only work for zip files, not Daz installers (without serious work). I will think about this though. I can't say it will be imminent much as I would like it to be so.

NEW VERSION 1.6

Change 1. Zip installation log files and a corresponding new program UninstZip. If a log file is dragged and dropped onto the uninstZip program it will uninstall all the files that came from that zip file.

Change 2. New option to move input files into Success or Failed folders

Download from the original link on the first post.

Sorry about the rubbish icons for the main program and the UninstZip program. Does anyone know of a good free icon source?

Well, if I understood how the program works it essentially "hijacks" the daz install process by feeding it parameters already, so I can't imagine it would be too difficult to just have the program install all the runtime info to a dummy directory and copy it over from there just as if it were a zip.

True. Still, the renaming bit would be tricky and it would invalidate the Daz installers uninstall routines.

Hmm.... but that would be simple enough to work around I would think, install everything without the "uninstall" feature from daz, and just incorporate an uninstall feature in your own program instead.  Since the idea is they'll be using your program have it keep a log file of what it installed and where and give it the ability to uninstall them instead, bypass the daz installer almost entirely.

Truth be told what little I have from Daz I never use there uninstaller routines anyway, more of a pain that what their worth.  I don't want 20 or 30 extra entries in my add and remove programs menu, enough crap in there already :)

First of all I want to say "thank you" as well. I have several ideas/proposals.

Would it be possible to integrate this into the context menu for .zip files? When you rightclick a zip-file, you have the option "Open with poser installer".

Then you have a dropdown box with the predefined runtimes (from the Runtimes.txt already in your app).

And it should list the folder names of the libraries folder included in the zip-file in a second step in a textfield (yeah I come from the web programming side :-).

So it would be possible to change the names of the folders that go into the libraries folders.
For example: "poses/freestuff creator xyz" so you it could be changed into "poses/V4 sitting poses". The names of the folders for textures and geometries cannot be changed, otherwise the files could not be found from poser.

Thanks

This is getting quite indispensible!

I have a feature request.  How about a way to add files from the program, rather than just copying them ahead of time?  An Add files button, so to speak.

Also, an intuitive way to end the process in the middle, like after the current install finishes.  I haven't figured out how to end the program early yet; though i could have sworn I read something on how to do that.

If you have a version prior to 1.6 then if you email me at the address in the readme file, I will be happy to send you version 1.6 free until the end of January.

How about a content UNinstaller?  Software that installs content and makes a record of all actions, and the data on all files created.  Then it can uninstall the content when summoned, maybe even hunt it down if it's been moved.

EnglishBob ( ) posted Wed, 12 November 2008 at 9:01 AM · edited Wed, 12 November 2008 at 9:03 AM

The drawback with this is that some content can share files with other items, and you wouldn't necessarily want those shared files deleted.

  • Edited to add: Hogsoft's Correct Reference Pro can do uninstalls, by looking through the library file to see what else is referenced from it. It suffers from the same drawback, nevertheless.

JQP ( ) posted Thu, 13 November 2008 at 1:44 PM

Examples?  If the file locations, sizes, dates, and names are recorded, seems removing them would be straightforward.  If they don't match, the program could ask for confirmation.

nruddock ( ) posted Thu, 13 November 2008 at 5:02 PM

You'd also need a usage count (or similar mechanism) for each file.

Not a trivial undertaking (see also Microsoft Windows DLL Hell).

leather-guy ( ) posted Thu, 13 November 2008 at 10:52 PM

Hi.
After scanning this thread, I just bought the program.  Trying to install it just now, it seems to be hard-coded to install into a folder called installer that has to be in the root directory of a hard drive.  How do I override this? Installing a minor utility (however useful) into it's own folder in a root directory is unacceptable to me.  My root directories on all 6 of my hard drives (1.6 TB total)are carefully organized.
I need to be able to install this into D:3D-AppsPoserUtils3DContentInstaller to maintain the organization I've labored for several years to maintain.
I haven't seen a program hard coded to a root directory in over 10 years (aside from some of Adobe's and Corel's support files, which is one of the reasons I've stopped using Adobe and Corel products).

How can this problem be corrected?

Thanks!
