Subject: Stupid question about textures

glennb ( ) posted Mon, 21 April 2008 at 5:42 PM · edited Thu, 30 January 2025 at 3:09 PM

I'm struggling with D|S and trying to make it do as I want, I have only used it for some week, but I used to do alot of 3D in Real3D (from Realsoft) many many years ago.

Well, now I want to create something simple, like a floor, I make a plane, and then go to surfaces, and select the plane, and click on the arrow on Difuse->color and choose an texture. Well, the plane looks like the texture, and I even can get it to bump and everything with an according bumpmap.

So what is the problem ? ..the problem is that my plane is 5x5m, and with a texture containing 25 floortiles each tile get around 1 meter each :) ..not very good.

In Real3D you could mark how large one instance of the texture should be, and then let it repeat seamless, no matter how I trying I cant get this to work. ..there MUST be an easy way to do it :)

..I even searched the D|S manual (when everything else fails, read the manual) but couldnt find anything.

..I forgot, isnt there any easier way to make a non-square plane than make one and manually scale it ?

..And isn't it possible to do lets say one wall, fix everything with textures and stuff, copy it and paste it somwhere else ? ..This MUST be påossible, but I cannot find any function for it.

I don't think DS does tiling..yet..I'm still hoping and waiting for it to be part of the application.

So, how does other people solve it ? make the plane in another application, and then import in D|S ?

What do people use for this stuff ? Hexagon ? Blender ? Maya ?

Well I mostly use DS as a means of getting poser content into Bryce.I did hope it would be ok to work with Carrara but the results have been spotty to say the least.

Otherwise you'll just have to experiment in Photoshop or some similar application with modifying textures.

Yes, I considered that, but I feel that its the wrong way to go.. bit if it is what it takes well..

The main reason that I'm struggeling with D|S instead of a "real" 3D app is that I really like to be able to easilly put humans in my 3d environments..

Tiling textures are not yet implemented in Studio.  In order to get a bump or displacement you will need to scroll further down the Surfaces list and then browse to where you have your bump map stored, or just use the texture map you have.  In order to get a good bump you will need to make sure your min and max values are set correctly.  Sometimes you will only need say

Min = -0.010
Max = 0.010

and sometimes you will need:

Min = -0.100
Max = 0.100

You really gotta play around with the bump and displacement settings.

If you wish to use tiling then there is a free set shaders from Pendragon.  You will find the info in the link provided above.

Good luck and have fun! :)

Well, thats great, but I downloaded and installed it, and yes, I get ALOT more options, but not tiling ? or is it just me that cant find it ?

You will need to get the Alpha... crap... I'm at work,.... let me go hunt it down for you....

Click the link above!

You will want the 2.0.5 version at the bottom.  I'm pretty sure this one has the tiling shader in it but just so you know there is NO preview, so you will just have to trust that it's going to tile your textures.  Give it a try! 😄
