Subject: Problem with OpenGL

My Poser 7 programme shuts down when it is set to OpenGL in the render preview settings. I'm using the latest driver for my Nividia 880GTX graphics card which I've downloaded from the site. It works fine when I alter the setting to SreeD but that makes it heavy to work with. I can't think of any explanation. Can anyone?

Using the latest Nvidia driver won't necessarily help matters with OpenGL problems (although it may be vital for some other application).   I have known one driver update to resolve problems between OpenGL and an Nvidia card, only for the next driver update to re-introduce the problem.  My current computer, however, doesn't have an Nvidia card, so I'm afraid I can't comment on specific drivers.

I get this problem with Poser Pro, so it is not just a P7 issue. I get the following extremely helpfull error message every time: "Poser Pro executable file has stopped working".

The problem is nvoglv32.dll, which is an nVidia file that sits in the nVidia folder looking all sweet and innocent, but in reality it is working behind the scenes to crush Poser at every opportunity...

The good news is there is a workaround - well, this works for me, so it is worth a try. It allows me to set Poser back to Open GL mode, 'cos SkreeD just drives me insane...  This is not my workaround - I read it somewhere in these forums, so I thank the person who suggested it, it works!

I open Poser with an empty document window, so it also opens with the main camera selected. First thing I do is whiz the camera around a bit (I use the X and Y Orbit dials, and then flick both dials back to the zero point) and then proceed to load a character or scene... and Poser behaves just fine.

I have poser 7 and have been dealing with this problem for a long time. I too also have the latest drivers installed for my 1GB 8600GT. I don't like working in Sree either and poser seems to be the only app with this problem as Vue and all my other programs run fine. I also open to a  empty document window and do the same by moving the main camera around. But alas somewhere down the line poser will crash to desktop so I just save every little change I make.

I have this same problem (Poser 7 and Poser Pro) on ONE of my two rendering machines. The machine that has the issue has a really crappy Nvidia card in it (which obviously means nothing, now that I see PaganArtist has a card that smacks my "good" card around).  Someone elsewhere here suggested turning down hardware acceleration... I have not tried that yet.  Anyone here?

do a search on "opengl" in this forum, and you'll find the fix to this. Or you can go to the following link:

So help me to understand if I go into the Nvidia control panel and click on the "Add" button an type in "Poser.exe" this will create a profile that I can adjust just like the programs (Video game titles) that are already listed?

That seems to be the suggestion, PaganArtist.

I'll be sure and try this... since I can't seem to find the hardware acceleration slider in XP 64 bit for my Nvidia cards.  I think it may have gone the way of the dodo.

And, lucky me, it started to happen on the one stable machine last night.

What's the big deal with opengl anyway?
I switched to Sree 3D and everything became stable.
Maybe I'm missing a point here, but I really didn't notice anything different, except that now Poser doesn't freeze or crash anymore.

Not much of a big deal if you have a low end display card. But with high/mid end cards the performance difference between SreeD and OpenGL is quite large.

Even on my laptop which has a crappy 8600m i get about twice the performance in OpenGL as opposed to SreeD.

ashley9803 ( ) posted Wed, 23 July 2008 at 6:14 AM

"... performance difference"
What does that mean?
If you're only going to render it anyway, what difference does the preview make?

ghonma ( ) posted Wed, 23 July 2008 at 6:48 AM

Well say i have 3-4 characters in a scene. With SreeD, i can barely even move my camera as it stutters and jerks around very badly. With OpenGL i can move it as if there were only 1 character in the scene.

It doesn't make any difference in rendering but helps a lot while you're still setting up your scene and moving stuff around.

Adjusting the specific program settings in the Nvidia control panel for Poser.exe and PoserPro.exe prevented any crashes last night.  Here's hoping that continues.

I'll try my second machine today, and see if it corrects there also.

If anyone is interested in how i set mine, post here and I will gladly let you know my settings,

i agree
ive tried the OpenGL workarounds but Sree3D is still far more stable.
yes, in OpenGL - when its working - navigating around the viewport is a bit smoother. but ill settle for a touch of viewport lag in exchange for 100% stability anyday, especially considering that the viewport is just a means to an end and it makes no difference in render quality.

the problem is not limited solely to Nvidia cards - i just swapped an ATI X1950XT for an Nvidia 8800GTX and performance in OpenGL with both cards was unstable -- although the ATI card actually let me mess around a bit in poser before it randomly crashed, while the Nvidia card crashed right away as soon as i touched anything in the viewport.

before people go blaming Nvidia - consider that i have no problems with this card in OpenGL mode in any other 3D apps, only Poser. ive never had problems with Nvidia running OpenGL in professional apps in the past - and ive been using them for 3D from back when we were resoldering resistors on GeForces to mod them into Quadro Pros. might want to take the problem up with Poser's developers instead.

turning down your hardware acceleration settings systemwide is counterproductive on high end cards seeing that hardware acceleration is the primary purpose of the card ... so make sure you do it using the profile method - setting up an Nvidia profile for poser.exe - and not by turning it down systemwide.

(**edit - 8800 not 9800)

As with you poser is the only app I have this trouble with. Vue 6 inf and other 3d apps I use run without a hitch.  It's kinda a run around when letting developers know of problems like this. Poser will say it's the card manufacturer's problem, the  card manufacturer will say it's a Poser app problem. Sell, sell sell, but don't find out with the problems are just point a finger somewhere else it's much easier that way.

PaganArtsist, I while post my settings when I get home.  They are probably far from perfect, it was my first stab at it.

Blackhearted, you are of course correct in your observations about it not being Nvidia or ATI's issues.  And you are right about not changing the hardware acceleration system wide, don't know what I was thinking trying to follow that suggestion (you can't even do that anymore with most cards). I guess I just expect to have Open GL... and SREE has always struck me as ugly, annoying, and hard to work with.  So I guess its a personal thing.
