Thanks Fugazi,

You know 3D Coat makes the process of making and texturing clothing for a figure so easy that anyone can now do it with ease.  I made three pair of pants for Brad in one afternoon!

Oh thanks!  I'm going to look at this when I get home from work.   Is 3D Coat a free modeling program?

I dont know any Poser specific ones apart from the ones on my youtube site, I'll probably do a more in depth one in the not too distant future.

Sadly not, I wish it were.  However it is a really good buy I think, it makes all sorts of things really easy to do.

Hi Acadia, Gini.

3D Coat is not free, but very resonably priced for all you get. It is a top notch 3D paint-texturing app that fully integrates with photoshop. It can turn out stunningly detailed textures and loses very little quality from the original photo, the best I've seen in that respect. It is a fully functional sculpting app that rivals Zbrush, only much easier to use. It has the best retopology tools on the market IMHO.  And much more for only $200.

And get this, Andrew who created the program actually hangs out in the forums and answers questions and takes suggestions for new features that users want. He is very quick to fix any bugs that people find as well.  Just top notch all around.

Gini:  Fugazi there also has some tutes on making clothing on his you tube page.

Edit:  Oops cross post.

Mike.

Too true the topology tool is fantastic, I can't stress that enough :)

Sculpting is great too, I have zb3 as well and 3D Coat is much easier to use with equally great results, well woth the money I think.

For a Poser user is provides so many possibilities from custmising existing content, like giving a texture a personal touch, to creating your own full blown figures textures and all.

I truely believe that it's ease of use opens it up to all levels of skill, and it really doesn't take much playing with before it starts to feel very natural to use.  Something ZB3 never really felt like, for me at least.

Oh and here is a poser render of the vase :) I forgot to add it earlier.

Thanks Fugazi & phantom, I'm checking out the tutes now.
I bought 3DCoat when it first came out at a intro special price but didn't get very far with it... more from lack of time than ineptitude (I like to think  ; )
Anyway have just upgraded to Version3 and hope to get a bit more into using it now in conjunction with Poser and Photoshop, my 3 main apps.
And have subscribed to your tutes Fugazi, they look very helpful !

Hey John,
I just watched your great tutorials about the poser clothroom.
Thumbs up!
You mention a poser script for cotton and rubber parameters.
Unfortunately I can't find it on your site, can you point me to it?

Thank you.

PhilC used to have some, but they seem to have gone missing in his last site makeover, so you could ask in his forums if they could be made available again.

See also linked thread.

You mean that I can put a 3D image of let's say the Morphing Fantasy Dress into Photoshop using 3D Coat and texture the dress in it's 3D view instead of on a flat template having to fuss with trying to match up front and back seams and straps and belts at the waist etc?

Sort of :) but its better than that

  1. Import MFD into 3d coat
  2. Paint directly onto the mesh in 3d coat using brushes, textures and all sorts of other tools.  As you paint you can paint onto 3 different channel maps - Colour, Specular and Displacement
  3. You can synchronise your textures with Photoshop to use any ps tools that you like, then synch back again :)

A texturers dream :)

John.

OMG!!! That sounds so amazing!  I know I'd be good at texturing because I love to sew and I have all kinds of design ideas in my head from when I used to tailor real clothing.  But I just don't have the patience for the tedious fiddling that is involved with trying to texture a flat template and then having to try and match up front/back/side seams or imaginary lines when making straps or waist/neck lines with front/back flat templates.  I've always wished that I could just have the whole 3D mesh of the clothing item on the screen and be able to just paint directly onto it because that would take the tediousness trial and error out of it.

Is there a demo of the program that I could try before buying? I do have Photoshop CS but am not very good with it. I started with Paint Shop Pro and haven't really worked at learning Photoshop because the method for doing things is just so different and I have a hard time relearning something and have always went back to PSP because it's just been easier and faster to do things instead of fiddling and trying to do it in Photoshop.  But if this 3D Coat can do what I think you are saying it can, then I would make the extra effort to learn Photoshop!

:) There is a demo I think, check the 3d coat site (link attached).

You can use psp with it I think, anything that will handle a psd file will work.  I'll do a demo when I get home from work, so you can see what it does a bit better.  Though if ya look on my youtube site I have some videos on texturing on a model.

I have CS2 and it integrates perfectly with it. I'm sure it will with the newer ones as well.

Yup! No seams to worry about, you paint right over top the seams and all, and it gets applied to your texture automatically. You can import jpg photos to use for your texture, line up and scale the photo the way you want and start painting the photo right onto the model. It has a mode to paint directly onto the pixels too so you lose very little detail from the photo.
