Hi all

Well loaded P8 started OK, but no libraries. The right hand window where it should be is just black.
I'm installing to default.

Any ideas

Regards

From SM Tech Support.

(See http://www.renderosity.com/mod/forumpro/showthread.php?thread_id=2778571&page=4)

The following has resolved this issue when encountered with over 90% of those reporting the issue.

First off, make sure your Operating System and your IE Browser are up to date, using Windows Updater. Set your Browser to Medium or Medium High Default Security Setting.

Then go to the Adobe Flash Web Site and use the Flash Uninstall and then use the Flash Install download files.

Uninstall
http://kb2.adobe.com/cps/141/tn_14157.html
Install
http://get.adobe.com/flashplayer/otherversions/

Launch Poser after rebooting and see if the issue remains.

If that does not resolve the issue, check your Firewall/Security Programs to make sure you are not blocking Poser.exe or 127.0.0.1

The other issue encountered is one of Permissions for Folder Access. Installation should be as Administrator for all aspects (Poser and Flash) when using Vista and all Users should have access to the programs and the Runtimes. (This can be an issue even if you are the only user on some systems. Vista you should not run the program as the Admin, but from your user account that may have Admin Rights.) Remember to Reboot your system after you make any changes to your Firewall, Security Software or User Accounts access.

To verify that all items were installed correctly, check the following Folder

... windows/system32/drivers/etc

for the Hosts File. In Hosts, using Notepad, look for the following entry

127.0.0.1 ::1 localhost

change it to

127.0.0.1 localhost

(removing the ::1 ) <[do not leave the space]. Save and reboot. Launch Poser.

Also, verify that the LSMGUI/bin-release folder is listed as a trusted Flash application folder.

The contents should be a variant of this:
…Poser 8RuntimeuiFlexLSMGUIbin-release

It should match the main runtime installation location.

In that folder is LSMGUI.html and LSMGUI.swf, the two pieces that make up the Library GUI. Launch Poser and double click the LSMGUI.html file and launch it in your browser. LSMGUI.html will display the Library as a standalone (but Poser must be running). Viewing this in your Browser may reveal the problem. If you also have Firefox, try using that to check the File when Poser is running.

Ok I open the LSMGUI.htm in my browser(firefox) and it all there OK.

alpha117 ( ) posted Thu, 13 August 2009 at 2:10 PM

Also I can add my remote runtimes from within the browser and it also works OK.

I have deleted the flashplayer and downloading the one from your link above, hopefully that will work.

Note: if you have a lot of runtimes to add, there is a script included that help.

Use the Menu Scripts/Partners/ShaderWorks/import_runtimes

Do not have a scene you're working on in memory when you run it. You'll need to restart Poser.

Just tried to run that, it was asking for a file to open 😕  I have 13 remote runtimes, so i just added them from the library. Couldn't see the advantage of the script, until you tell me otherwise:blushing:

bagginsbill ( ) posted Thu, 13 August 2009 at 3:26 PM

OK. For me it just found my other version of Poser and imported. Doesn't matter. You're up and running.

Hmmm I just ran this as I had ?'s after all my runtimes that I added manually - now I have all my runtimes there but all (including my P8 content) have ?s next to them now. I've tried clicking the refresh thing but nada :/

alpha117 ( ) posted Sun, 16 August 2009 at 3:50 AM

Hi Purdey

I get the ? also, but only when i first start up poser, it just takes awhile to index  all the runtimes. I have 133gb of runtimes. Once it has finished indexing them all is ok

Purrdey ( ) posted Sun, 16 August 2009 at 3:55 AM

Hmm I uninstalled, reinstalled and everything was there. I loaded up a scene and it was all back to ?s again.  That also applies to the Poser 8 main content library. One minute it was there, next it was gone lol!

alpha117 ( ) posted Sun, 16 August 2009 at 4:39 AM · edited Sun, 16 August 2009 at 4:40 AM

have you followed bagginsbill fix which in in this thread?

do you see your runtimes ok when you launch LSMGUI.html in your browser?

Purrdey ( ) posted Sun, 16 August 2009 at 4:48 AM

Yeah, it's not that the library is blank, I can see all the folders, it's just that they have ?s after them. Hitting refresh doesn't do anything. It's just weird that they are there one minute gone the next.
Anyway I closed P8, opened again and I got them all there and I'm rendering something now to see the indirect lighting so lets see if they're there still when this is done.

What?! Poser 8 needs Adobe Flash?

What happens to Poser 8 the next time Adobe Flash is updated that and it's not compatible?

What if in a year or two from now you're re-installing Windows, have to reinstall Poser and compatible versions of Flash from the time of Poser 8's release are no longer available?

My brain is just a toy box filled with weird things

Purrdey ( ) posted Sun, 16 August 2009 at 8:42 AM

Well I'm guessing that Service releases of Poser will take care of keeping it parallel with Flash versions, I would be pretty confident that it won't be an issue.

mylemonblue ( ) posted Sun, 16 August 2009 at 8:53 AM

I hope so. Only other worry is I just hope we are not unable to continue using P8 after P9 comes out and support is dropped for Poser 8.

What if you don't want Flash installed on your computer at all?  I have an older version Flash and have no intention what so ever of updating that software.  I keep the plugin I have now disabled most of the time ...

There are serious privacy concerns with Adobe Flash.  I guess there will be no Poser 8 in my future.

My hosts thingy looks like this :

127.0.0.1       localhost
::1             localhost
127.0.0.1 activate.adobe.com

Is this wrong?  This type of stuff makes no sense whatsoever to me =

Rance01 ( ) posted Sun, 16 August 2009 at 1:03 PM

I think Bill mentioned that

127.0.0.1 ::1 localhost

should be changed to

127.0.0.1 localhost

Can't check it against my own hosts file.  I modified mine along time ago to block unwanted ad banners and third party cookies.  I'm pretty sure getting Poser 8 to work on my system would take some doing ...

laschae, you could make a copy of your original hosts file, make the changes and see what happens.  If Poser is working now you should be all set anyway;)

You can disable the Flash plugin for IE and other browsers without affecting P8's use of the Flash player ActiveX control.

Rance01 ( ) posted Sun, 16 August 2009 at 1:37 PM

I actually picked up a newer machine running Vista and in the version of Flash running on that machine (10 I think) I couldn't find the options to turn off the automatic updates or stop it from running at startup.  I gave the machine away -- Poser 6 crashed constantly and I, frankly, gave up on it -- and I never really figured out all the ins and outs of the OS.  I do remember Flash annoyed the hell out of me.  Further reading about Adobe Flash makes me want to avoid the software altogether.  I do have version 9 now and disable the browser plugin as often as not.  I know I miss a lot of content on the Web but I don't miss the comercials and don't miss being tracked.

If Smith Micro had tied Poser 8 to Adobe Flash I will pass on the upgrade.  Not all that interested in beta testing their software anyway.  I did go along with a number of earlier versions of Poser and found it entertaining enough.  Just don't feel like going through all that again with a new version.  I didn't like version 7 and was always a little sorry I spent the loot for that.  Guess I will turn the computer off and go for a walk outside;)

Enjoy,
Rªnce

PS: Does anyone sell software that actually works?  Poser 4 ProPack was the last solid version of Poser I remember.  I know figuring stuff out can be fun, knocking around in HOSTS files shouldn't be a requirement to getting a software package to work in my book.

bagginsbill ( ) posted Sun, 16 August 2009 at 2:26 PM

It is not a requirement to edit the hosts file unless you have a borked one. Even so, I don't think it matters.

But carry on. I've given up fighting the endless flow of speculative misinformation doom and gloom.

Rance01 ( ) posted Sun, 16 August 2009 at 2:57 PM

Huh?  I only replied about the hosts file edit because it was mentioned earlier.  Didn't mean to pass out misinformation.  And I don't mean to be full of doom and gloom.  I'm happy for everyone who's happy and would be the first to congratulate you bagginsbill.  I know how generous and forthcoming you are with your knowledge.

I only found out about Poser 8s release on Friday.  I've been working alot the last few months and don't always connect to the Web.  Knew it was GOING to be released but had no idea it was out.  Only reading the threads about it now.

Is it true then, Flash is required by the program?  I'm not even sure if that's the case.  Just reading some of the fixes as downloading the new Flash Player version ...

bagginsbill ( ) posted Sun, 16 August 2009 at 3:24 PM

Yes the new Library/Search/Favorites GUI is written in Flex which requires Flash. It is a complete rewrite of how the library works. It is massively mutli-threaded and can do extensive work in the background, unlike the old library module. The old library easily died with 500 GB in runtimes, this one can handle that even in a single runtime, and doesn't make you wait for it to catch up. It also remembers what you're interested in, and will do more to become adaptive to your habits in the future.

There is signficant benefit to the technology chosen. Pros and cons were weighed. It isn't like this decision was made by stupid people for stupid reasons, despite what so many opine. Plus, the ultimate goal of the library has not been revealed, so anybody giving their opinion about the decision is working with incomplete knowledge, which makes the opinions irrelevant.

Is there a current non-self installing Flash Version. My Poser PC is not linked to the Internet. My Flash is 10.0.12.36 and it doesn't work with Poser 8.I have this message in my librarie palette: "Alternate HTML content should be placed here. This content requires the Adobe Flash Player. Get Flash " too bad not linked to the Internet. I realy hope I will be able to run Poser properly without Internet access.

Rance01 ( ) posted Sun, 16 August 2009 at 7:46 PM

I've seen the Reader on disc but am not sure about Flash.  According to the product page Version 10 should work.  Is the program listed in you Add and Remove Programs?  Maybe you have an installation issue with the software.

Seems like you'd be able to download the installer and move to the computer you're using on disc or something.  Or try re-installing Flash from the version 10 you have.  I can't remember where the installer nests itself on the users computer.  I'm sure the installer is there on your computer somewhere.

My machine is much older -- Windows XP Pro.  I've been looking for the installer but now think I was thinking about Adobe Reader and NOT Flash.  The reader DOES have a Setup.exe nested on the computer.  Does your SysWOW64 have an Install program file?  The 'WOW64' makes me think there maybe different versions of Flash.  32 and 64?

Might be you'll have to download the installer using one computer installing the software from a disc or portable device.  Did you get Poser 8 on disc?  Maybe they included Flash?  I did look at my Add and Remove programs and REMOVE is the only option.  I was hoping they might include a REPAIR function.

Wish I could be more help.

So you do have Internet?  I think once everything is installed you'll have no problems.  Internet access is only required to use the Content Paradise window in Poser I would think.  If you're connected to the Web you should have no problems getting Flash.

Not sure how they set up the program registration.  Earlier versions did require online registration.

Good luck.  Sounds like you got it licked.  I'm off to bed.  Early flight in the morning.

I use to have a small laptop for Internet and a desktop for 3d graphics including Poser. If atool is needed or a registration it can be done using an externall HDD.

Bagginsbill can confirm, but I think you only need Version 9 Flash. I am not sure if you need to have an updated Internet Explorer (Not version 8, but the updated version 7) I know the Library works in the updated Version of IE 7, but I am not sure if you will have that with your system not connected to the web.

The above link is for developers... you may want to contact Adobe directly to see if it is available for an enduser, using a product that requires Flash to be installed that does not have Web Access.

I have not tried IE 6... What OS are you running? Poser 8 requires Windows XP or Vista. It also states that it requires Flash 9 or better. I am not sure if Flash 9 would work on IE 6.

Technically, Poser 8 should still run, you just could not use the Library, but there are some third Party Products which you could use in place that I do not think require the Poser 8 Library for them to function.

Oh O_O;; Sorry.

I didn't see that it only is to work in XP or Vista. I guess that puts me out of the loop then. I had to revert to using Win2000. With all the hardware changes I tend to go through I just can't use XP with it's re-activations and Vista's addition of user data collection makes it even more unacceptable. Ehhh I guess I'll just shut up now. Sorry for being such a bother and thank you for all your patients in answering my questions.

I don't suppose it can be made to run in Linux by chance? LOL.

Yeah I know the answer to that...  Ok. I shut up now. m(_ _)m

It works fine with only IE6.
Just use the FlashPlayer installer supplied with P8, it's in the same directory as the Adobe Reader installer.

"Also, verify that the LSMGUI/bin-release folder is listed as a trusted Flash application folder."

How do we do that?

Rance01 ( ) posted Mon, 17 August 2009 at 5:22 PM

From the Smith Micro Web Site:

  • Windows XP or Vista
  • 700 MHz Pentium class or compatible (1 GHz or faster recommended)
  • 512 MB system RAM (1 GB or more recommended)
  • OpenGL enabled graphics card or chipset recommended (recent NVIDIA GeForce and ATI Radeon preferred)
  • 24-bit color display, 1024 x 768 minimum resolution
  • 2 GB free hard disk space (4 GB recommended)
  • Internet connection for Content Paradise
  • Windows® Internet Explorer® 7
  • Adobe® Flash® Player 9
  • DVD-ROM drive (physical product only)

The Internet connection is for the Content Paradise Room (window) only.  One would have to get on the Net to download the required Flash installer or to download IE7.  Microsoft DOES offer CD-ROM installers (for the price of shipping and handling I think) and the Flash installer could be downloaded to a computer and written to disc or a flash (thumb) drive and brought to a non-Internet computer.

-Looks to me like Timberwolf has solved any issues he was having, including the product registration.

Be Well,

redtiger7 ( ) posted Mon, 17 August 2009 at 6:00 PM

Finally got it working. But I have to allow the program full access to the internet in Zone Alarm, not just server access. That concerns me a bit as I don't see why Poser needs an internet connection unless I go to content paradise. I know that may sound doom and gloomy, but in today's software neighborhood, spyware is a legitamate concern.
