Subject: How to save characters

Pjotter ( ) posted Wed, 30 September 2009 at 10:59 AM · edited Thu, 07 November 2024 at 9:43 PM

Yes, sounds simple. But I am stuck.

Imported an obj file, added the skeleton and tuned it. But how do I save it so I can re-use it again. Would be nice in the content tab, but not important. Tried different settings in export obj, but then I loose the skeleton setup. Tried saving it as character, but then I can't import it. The only thing that works, is saving the whole scene. But I think there must be a better way.

A Poser character is saved as a CR2 file. If you have the Figure Setup Tool you can select File/Export and inthe file type chose  "Poser CR2 File"
Save the file in a Runtime-compatible folder and then import than folder ikn your Studio Library and you'll be able to see in the Content tab.

Have you tried making a .pz2 of the tuned skeleton using the Poser Format Exporter (which is still free at daz3d.com) or perhaps saving it as a pose instead of a character in the file drop-down tab?

PZ2 will not work, this is an .obj file with the skeleton created from scratch. A PZ2 file works in addition to an existing figure, it cannot stand by itself.

Using the Custom option in the Save Pose Preset dialog, users can selectively record any parameters of their choosing to a Pose Preset.

Try that-of course that is if what you want saved is the fiddling OF the skeleton instead of the entire SKELETON in it's fiddled pose/settings/parameters.

The CR2 solved it. Not sure about "import that folder in your Studio Library", because it showed up without doing that. But it works and that is what counts. Thanks.

You could also have saved it as a scene file - double-clicking a scene file in the Content palette merges it with the current scene, and it would have the benefit of including surface settings and not loading any morphs (if you have them) until they are set to a non-zero value, neither of which is true for the cr2 (but the cr2 is usable in Poser, Carrara and others).

Reagrding the library import, it's only necessary if you save to a directory that is not included in you Studio config.

So the cr2 file has limitations? I am not using Poser and probably won't need it. My "path" is creating characters without skeleton, import them in Daz and include the skeleton and the other tools. From there I make my scenes in Daz. I haven't use morphs so far, but I will need them in the future. Probably with Mimic.

Until yesterday I did save each character as a scene and then use File > Merge. Saving each characters as a scene is doable but not easy. Is there an important reason for not saving my characters as cr2? For me this is the easiest way.

As I said, the cr2 won't store (and DS wouldn't read if it did store) many surface settings, so if you've set your materials up ypou should either save a scene or export a cr2 and save a materials preset. What is complex about saving a scene? There are fewer dialogues than going through cr2 exporter, and if you are in a DS content dierctory you can do it by clicking on the + at the bottom of the Content palette without having to navigate to the desired folder.

It is not complex, but weird. Software that is not capable to store complete objects/characters created in that software. I thought I had it solved with CR2, but something not right. The skeleton parameters are responding in a weird way. So back to saving them as scenes. It works, is easy and I can move on. Thanks.
