Subject: OT: Very OT: Anyone know what Rib pain means?

josterD ( ) posted Wed, 14 October 2009 at 10:41 AM · edited Fri, 22 November 2024 at 4:44 PM

I've been having sudden rib pain attacks . Upper right abdomen.

It feels terrible. I was checked for gallstones and they found nothing.
Could it be a damaged nervous system.. and what should i take to get rid of these pains?

It's hard to do Poser or even at work, when i get it i feel like collapsing.

any help appreciated.

That's one of the reasons i could never be a programmer or something like that. I get sudden strong pains that make me feel like dying

It could be Costochronditis.  Check with your doctor.

http://www.diagnose-me.com/cond/C598186.html

It could also be a fractured or bruised rib. In both cases just time, rest and pain medication like Ibuprofen are the only cures.

It could also be pleurisy which is inflammation of the lining surrounding the lungs.  A chest xray will diagnose that.

It could also be a Vitamin D deficiency. A simply blood test will diagnose that.  Part of what kept me off work on disability was severe pain in my ribs and eventually my entire skeletal system from head to toe. I thought I had bone cancer it was so bad. I was referred to a pain clinic. A blood test showed that I had virtually no Vitamin D in my body. I was put on prescription high does for 6 months and then a maintenance dose daily for the rest of my life.  My pain was almost gone by the end of 6 months, and at the end of a year it was gone completely.  See your doctor and ask for a blood test.

You need to talk to your Doctor-this might give you some information prior to your visit to help you clarify the description of your symptoms:

Hmm.

Here's a web site that's helpful in "brainstorming" about symptoms and possible causes, areas to look into. If you have some other specific symptoms, you can enter them all and the site will offer possiblities.

Starting only with rib pain, look here:

By the way, we programmers all get sudden strong pains that make us feel like dying. They're called "users". ;-)

Upper right abdomen is the top of your kidney and you're describing what I have a LOT of experience with. Kidney Stones! Go See your Doctor! It could also be appendicitis, which I've also had and since I was so used to having kidney stones that's what I thought it was when I had mine removed. Seriously, if you're having pain like that, go to the ER or your doctor.

Miss Nancy ( ) posted Wed, 14 October 2009 at 3:03 PM

in addition to the above, when seeing doctor again, provide list of recent food items and medications, to zero in on a chronic condition unrelated to those.

Ridley5 ( ) posted Wed, 14 October 2009 at 3:48 PM · edited Wed, 14 October 2009 at 3:49 PM

The general rule of thumb is that if the pain is severe (prohibits you from doing daily activities), call your doctor/go to the ER (preferably both) right away.

Kidney stones often presents more as flank or back pain at first although the pain may radiate(move) to other areas.  Appendicitis is again more lower right abdominal pain although again, this cant be ruled out either.  If it is pleuritis, then usually when you breathe/inspire, the pain often intensifies.

If you do have upper right abdominal pain, gallstones, gastritis, and ulcers are the prime sources in a number of patients.  Notice carefully if eating meals or taking antacids of any kind improves or worsens your symptoms.

A simple test to see if the pain is external (musculoskeletal such as costochondritis or a broken rib) or internal (gallbladder, stomach, kidney, etc) is simply press on the area where the pain seems to be localized.  If it gets significantly worse, it suggests a superficial cause (broken rib, strained muscle, etc). Although this method is not as reliable, it at least helps your doctor to notice the rough location of your pain and could facilitate diagnosis.

At this point, anything could be the cause (even the heart)..so first:

  1. See a physician immediately
  2. Note carefully your symptoms including: duration, severity, location, things that make it better or worse, and finally associated symptoms (nauseu, vomiting, breathlessness, etc.)
  3. Note all meds and past medical/surgical conditions of which you may have or have had in the past

Hope this helps...

Do you cough a lot? Believe it or not you can actually fracture a rib doing that..I did.

The pain can of course generate to the surrounding areas too.

Anyhow see a doctor, and get an xray asap

Have you seen the Poser gallery?

Most of us don't have a clue about anatomy, let alone anything medical.  In fact, most of us can't even tie our shoelaces.  And you're asking us?

Get to a doctor, dammit!

Did you do any body check? There may be something wrong with your liver.
If you get angry easily or feel unhappy, you may easily get this pain too. If so, Chinese medicine could help you.

Chiropractor, Ribs out of place is VERY painful but can be dealt with. Also a spine with slight twist puts the ribs under pressure. That is also very painful. A modern trained Physiotherapists can also deal with it. It may not be this at all but I thought I'd offer up this idea to add another possible avenue to peruse in your search for the actual cause.

I hope you find what the actual cause is and find the right medical/health professional to deal with it.

Go to the doctor. Explain where the pain is. Take the tests and find out.

The number of potential causes is legion; dislocated rib, torn cartilage, gall bladder, kidneys, liver, twisted colon, impending bowel blockage, calcification, translocated angina, tumor (cancerous, pre-cancerous, non-cancerous, takes your pick), spiral fracture, etc etc etc......

Doctor. NOW.

Marque ( ) posted Thu, 15 October 2009 at 7:50 AM

Did they do an ultrasound when they checked for gallstones? If not you might request it as it may be your liver that is causing the problem. At any rate you need to go back to your doctor and make them understand the kind of pain you're in. Good luck with this. Will be saying a prayer for you.

T4 -T7,  Arthritic Spondylitis? = GabaPenten, maybe?  See your GP.

estherau ( ) posted Sun, 18 October 2009 at 6:47 AM

Dave-So - that's awful.  It must have been a big shock to you, but no doubt you've grown to love the baby - little teeny tiny cute antenae and all.   they grow up so fast - don't they (especially the alien ones).

BTW even a negative US scan for stones doesn't mean you can't have a type of gallstone pain called biliary colic.  you need to see a specialist to work this one out.  Ask your GP to refer you to a general physician or gastroenterlogist depending what the GP thinks the pain might be related to.

PS it's not from sitting scrunched in your chair in an awkward position for hours and hours doing poser is it?

 estheru. thanks for the info.

NO, it's not from the poser sitting : )

OH yesterday i woke up at 3 am.. and i have pain that doesn't end. I'm still having it right now.

I don't want to go to the emergency cause i don't look like i'm dying and they'll just say that i'm making it up.. then charge me like 200 dollars.

So gastro doctor huh.. i should go.

But man, daM***t, i just got a job and if i start saying i'm sick, they're gonna fire me because I'm the only one doing the job that i have. the helpers are not coming tomorrow and the boss was counting on me.

Oh and i'm noticing one symptom, aside from pain, my rght upper ab is spasming intermitently

Miss Nancy ( ) posted Sun, 18 October 2009 at 3:33 PM

IMVHO it's better to take care of that ASAP.  far more important to catch this early, than some paper-sorting or bus-boy job.  there may be some hospitals in L.A. which will still treat ya and then bill based on ability to pay.  in general, they're required to treat emergency patients regardless of ability to pay. but chronic care requires insurance.  best wishes for a good outcome.
