Subject: Define Rendering

santolina-sailor ( ) posted Sun, 02 May 2010 at 1:45 AM · edited Wed, 23 October 2024 at 2:22 AM

If you had to define to a lay-person what "Rendering" meant-----you know the scenario
",Ill show you the image as soon as its finished Rendering "which is usually met with a blank stare.
Ill usually say that "Rendering"is a process where the computer is now converting the data Ive created in the progran into pixels which when renedered can be seen and if required printed.
Even this doesnt allways work.
Is there then a better way explain to the unconverted what rendering is?

I normally tell people that have no clue about poser or computers that its generating an image. Making it from blah to HD.  I normally still get a blank look.

To laypersons i explain it as making a 'set' inside a computer (ie like a film or studio set with actors, props, lights etc) and then asking the computer to film it from a camera. This usually gets the point across fairly well without any mention of the technical side of things or them thinking that it's the computer doing all the work.

I generally tell them my computer is taking a picture of my scene or of my figure. We generally don't go into much detail about what a digital camera does when we take a picture with it, so for the same reason we can use the same metaphor for rendering.

Ah taking a picture is a good way of explaining it. I normally says the computer is "drawing it" (somehow it sounds a little less stupid in Danish L

But generally when I try to sexplain Poser to non-3D savvy people such as my colleagues, I liken it to The Sims. Most have at least heard of that L So it's "like the sims, just better" in my explanation :)

Now try explaining people what it is you're SELLING when it comes to textures and Poser models ect.. and see the blank stares emerge L

You just can't put the words "Poserites" and "happy" in the same sentence - didn't you know that? LaurieA
Using Poser since 2002. Currently at Version 11.1 - Win 10.

Interesting you should say "Sims", TrekkieGrrl - I got my start in 3D with Sims2... I loved making all those lovely people, but hated the way they behaved in the game... stupid game! Next came Blender3D which was a bit daunting, and then I discovered Daz Studio... and ultimately Poser 5.

The most common question I get when I dare mention Poser or 3D and that I might make a farthing or two with it is: "But what do people DO with it?" I daren't show them this site, or they might think I'm aiding and abetting digital pornography.

WelllllL!!?!?!?!! Had a good look at the front door of Rendo recently?

I usually just say I do "3D modeling and texturing", followed quickly by "don't ask". LOL

Rendering, definition: "the process or business of separating fat from meat or animal remains by slow heating"

More seriously, one definition of rendering is to "give an interpretation or rendition of". I guess you could say that Poser is giving a final "polished" interpretation of your scene.

Straight and simple from wikipedia:

* Rendering (computer graphics)*, generating an image from a model by means of computer programs

I usually say that I set up a scene and the computer figures out the lighting and shadows and textures. It's kinda like Toy Story or Shrek only not that fancy (or sometimes I say high end) of a program, and I don't do animation. -This explanation is for those who have some familiarity with computers. For those who have no clue what so ever I use the photo set/take a picture analogy.

edit: mostly I don't go into what I do in poser, except that I make pictures.

I find myself having to explain "rendering" to a lay-person quite often ("lay-person" is such a weird term O_o)

I usual say its the program taking my scene and calculating how rays of light interact with surfaces and project shadows and calculate reflections and transparancies.

Which usually gets the response, "huh?"

at which point I strangle them.
