Subject: Hair Parenting

blf ( ) posted Mon, 26 April 2010 at 7:20 PM · edited Thu, 23 January 2025 at 2:46 PM

I think the forum ate my thread. I went to user posts and couldn't find this one, so I will try again. I am using the Simon Character and tried to add Ryan's hair. I scaled it, made it fit properly and went to parent from the hair property panel and there was no "parenting" option.

I tried to change the hierarchy and I even went to the object to change parent and apply bends...but when I pose the character, his hair does it's own thing.

Is it odd that there is a second "body" under the hair in the hierarchy as well?

As always, thanks tons!

It sounds like the Ryan hair is a conforming figure, which would account for the second "Body".  If that is the case, conform it to Simon and then adjust the scaling.  You can, then, save it out as an .hr2 file so that it comes back in as a prop, which can be parented.

OK, I tried that..and it was a mess. I picked the hair as an object and conformed to Simon and it flipped out or something.....

Don't conform it to simon. Use the set parent option in the figure menu rather than the object menu. Of course, if you really want to conform it, I suppose you could use wardrobe wizard.

I tried that too, but as soon as I pose him, the hair poses and the body doesn't....

If you had to use xyz translations to get it to fit correctly, your best bet would be to fit it to the figure you want to parent it to (make sure that figure is in the zero position), export the hair prop as an obj. Don't check anything except the existing groups option (last in the list on export). Delete your scaled hair and import the object that you just exported back in. It will be in the correct place and the correct scaling. Parent to your new figure's head and use the materials from the original hair. Save to your library (don't select any subsets when you save) - it should say something about the item being a smart prop and do you want it smart propped...choose yes. You will of course lose all the morphs for the hair this way if there are any.

That sounds like you selected the wrong figure to pose.  You cannot conform hair which belongs to one model to an entirely different model.  The crude, but effective,  workaround would be to scale and parent, or load and apply parenting to an imported geometry obj.  However, using the latter approach would not load any morph capacity associated with the piece.  Victoria_Lee's method sounds to be the best alternative.

Once you conform a hair figure to say Simon the xyz parameters usually dont work - at least for me it hasnt in the past.
If the hair is a prop - use the object menu to change the parent of it.
if the hair is a figure, my advice is that if you are having this many issues with it, pose your figure etc, and at the end before rendering, bring in the hair and scale it to fit simon.

OK, created the hair....but not  sure how to save as an .hr2 file and bring back in...help? Please.

Save into the Hair Category of the Library.  That will create the needed .hr2 format.  Afterwards, load from the library just like your models.

I looked as the save as and the export, I still don't know how to save as an .hr2 file. I don't understand how to save to a library either.

Sorry for my stupidity....

Well hborre nailed it. If it's a hair meant for Ryan you can't conform it to Simon without it being a mess.

But yes, it can be parented, and with at least short hair, there's really no advantage in conforming it, quite the opposite. Long hair is nice when it's conforming because it'll bend properly when the head bends or the shoulders are twisted.. but for most male hair, which is typically short, parenting is enough.

Saving to library, select your model, hair, prop, etc, highlight your target folder in the library category, and click on the + sign located on the bottom.  You might be asked to select other models scene, and then a name for the model.

OK, I am giving up, nothing seems to work. Any suggestions for free hair for Simon model? (Beginning to think I wasted 200 bucks on this program.)

Whoa, don't give up now.  Despite the lack of Ryan and Simon support, there are DAZ3D's millennium base models which are all free and have more freebie content available at several sites.  You might be better off using the popular models.

You can't expect to learn in mere days and weeks what it took some of us months and years to learn (meaning that 200 buck program)....lol. If you just want Poser to "work" and not have to tweak anything, look for anything for the current Daz figures. There's tons of stuff and it's more or less just load, pose and render.
