Subject: VSS Latina skin settings

gamedever ( ) posted Mon, 21 June 2010 at 8:06 AM · edited Sat, 15 February 2025 at 4:55 PM

Does any VSS user know how to adjust the skin shader included with VSS to convert a caucasian skin to latina? (aka white to slightly brown?)

hborre ( ) posted Mon, 21 June 2010 at 9:15 AM

I can't post an illustration at the moment, but if you scroll left towards the Parmatic nodes, you will find the Color_Tint control for skin textures.

gamedever ( ) posted Mon, 21 June 2010 at 9:16 AM

Right, I know about that. Have experimenting it for days, haha, trying to find the right tone to use. Most results lead to my skin becoming unhumanly brown, alien-ly brown.

hborre ( ) posted Mon, 21 June 2010 at 9:28 AM

You need to use a very light tone with that control, don't over darken the chip.  In the link below, I demonstrated several renders to correct a situation existing in the Ultimate Miki2 Morph package found @ RDNA.  The technique used caused an over saturation of the skin texture shifting the tint towards red, which cause all sorts of render problems. Using VSS restored the normal skin color. But to reproduce the intended tint, I added a HSV node with a modified saturation value, plugged the skin texture in, then plugged the HSV node into Color_Tint.

The exact values to use will depend on whether you are using render GC or not, and the exact colors of the existing texture. I can guess about the texture by just doing examples with a few of the textures I have, but I need to know whether you're using render GC or shader GC.

Oh another factor is whether or not you have a separate specular map in the texture set. If not, then the shader uses the red component of the color map. Why does this matter? Because darkening (tinting) the color map will darken the red component, thus decreasing the specular effect. You may have to boost the specular value to tune it, compensating for the darkening you're doing to get the darker color.

Here's a very pale color map with no tint.

Tinted here with RGB 255, 220, 200, but this is with render GC enabled. The actual linear value is anti-GC'd first by Poser. So you won't get the same results with that exact number unless you're using render GC.

I use Poser Pro 2010, with render GC enabled. I also use the Angel V4 skin texture from DAZ. It had a bad specular map so I adjusted it in Photoshop. And yes, the spec map (as well as bumb map) are all individual texture maps.

K - are the images I posted in line with what you want?

Yes, that's what I seek. I want a latina woman, not tanned, hence my new thread. Thank you. Any thing else I should change? SSS? I use IDL, by the way.

bagginsbill ( ) posted Mon, 21 June 2010 at 5:25 PM

I had the SSS set to .7, with IDL. If it comes out too red, decrease the SSS as I did.

Excellent, setting it to 0.3 seems to work for my skin. Thanks again.

When I went to render my test figure full body, I found the specular map was messed up. The amount of specular represented in the body was less than half that of the face.

I found it easier to just not use the specular maps at all. Here's what I got.

That's a feature I love about your shader, it still allows for specularity even if the map is crap. (Though it's better to make a new, accurate specular map)

bopperthijs ( ) posted Mon, 21 June 2010 at 6:07 PM

IMHO, when you want a latino skincolor, and not a tanned one, you'll have to reduce the red color, so it will be more greenish,  I had good results with a 220,255,245 settings and a reduce of the diffuse value of 0.6

best regards,

Bopper.

Oops, sorry, I forgot to tell that I'm using the DAZ-vanessa skin a lot, which is rather tanned by itself

Yes adding more green is a way to get a more "olive" skin tone. I've seen your skin colors, bopper - they are terrific.

For reference, here is my test figure without the tint.

Taking bopper's suggestion, I tinted with RGB 255, 240, 200, Diffuse Reflectivity = .4, SSS = .7.

What type of Latina are you striving for?

And simply because all American (North & South) and Caribbean Latins are all intermixed with the native populations.  Physical attributes and skin color will vary tremendously.

gamedever ( ) posted Mon, 21 June 2010 at 6:58 PM

I seem to have found one I like. An Olive shade, I did bagginsbill's rgb values with a tweak to the sss and diffuse reflectivity, 0.6 and 0.5, respectively.

Oh wow! These looks good... I wondered how it would look on M4... Thanks for the thought provoking inspiration.
