Fractals F.A.Q (Last Updated: 2024 Nov 13 3:03 pm)

Subject: Fractal Explorer

FractalFactor ( ) posted Tue, 26 October 2010 at 6:18 AM

I'm still running XP, so no problems, but there is an option on Vista and Windows 7 to run a program in a different environment--such as the XP environment. So basically what you're doing is using the way the older operating system worked. With that, there should be no problems running FE. If you have the FE icon on your desktop, rightclick it, select properties, and over at the right there will be a tab for compatability. Select that, check the box for compatability mode and select the version of Windows you want to use from the drop-down menu. You can do the same thing if you start FE from your list of programs. Highlight it, rightclick and follow the same steps.

I am very very ignorant and  can only say that :

  1. I have a new PC with Windows 7
  2. Dual Core Duo
  3. 64-bit
The main programs fractals work fine : I refer to FE, UF, Apo
only a few very old spot of Fe (2003) do not open

'Morning everyone. I woke at 4.30am and decided to check on this thread. My goodness! I'm so pleased it is blossoming like it is. It's now 8.22. Yawnnnnn.

Anyway, there are some questions I can answer.

FE availability: I have all the versions, starting, I think, with 123, and ending with 203b3. I have them all in one folder that also contains the zipped versions. I use 200.b3 and 203.b3. 200b3 is the most stable, but contains fewer built in formulae. The file is 30+ mb. I can either split it and send in several pieces, or upload it to one of those large file-sharing sites for people to download. Can somebody please point me to a good one?  I don't want to split it down into a smaller file, because the one I use is the one I know works.

Developer stuff: Arthur actually was working on updating the code when he disappeared suddenly. No actual reason given, but...anyway. Perhaps voluntary. There is source code around. Andre Vandergoten has a copy.  I  have his email address.

There is no site where 203b3 is available. As far as I know, the Eclectasy site is still operational. It has all the ancillary files. The version there is older.

Compatibility. There are some issues. As Len said, the 32/64 bit is one of them. I have found also that there seems to be a few problems with running system qpps beside fE. This has arisen recently. Going offline and killing virus checker. etc do help, but XP and up are much bigger programmes that do tend to expand to fill any available space. RAM in particular. So if you want to render images larger than 6000x6000, there can be problems, even when running in 'skeleton' mode. Arthur always worried about RAM, as do I.

Bugs: LOL. We're talking FE here; its gold is more hidden than the big shiny fractal software. But usually there are workarounds, including the best workaround of all: patience.

FEusers list is still alive, but is taking no new members, and it has morphed into a group of people posting almost anything but FE. I find it sad to see the degeneration after the strong, robust list I joined in 1998.

Spot sharing: This is the best way to keep the blood circulatig. Like Jenny, I do it all the time. In fact, I think most of us do.

Saving palettes. The easiest way is: in the view pane on the left of the main window, open the folder containing the spot you want to copy th palette from; select and right click the spot. You can then choose to open the palette which will transfer to the image you are workjing on. To save a palette, just use the lower left palette options. This will enable you to save your most favourite palettes where you can access them readily. There is room for six, I think, and you can change them whenever you want. I have a couple of Arend's that I still often use as starting points.

Numbers using FE. I'll get back to you on this.

What a pleasure to read everyone's posts. Jenny you did start something lovely.

I have to go and nurse my pleurisy. Yeah. Still too painful. The good news it it should get better. The bad news is it is expected to be three MONTHS!!!

much love

merren

Hi Jenny, and everybody :)

I'm sorry, I'm a bit late here.
Also, I have not read all your reactions to Jenny's call.
(It will still try)

I only work with FE
Do not use other "states" around it.
Just 'bare' Fractal exploror.

Great treat you started, Jenny!

Bye friends!
Mies.

p.s. FE is just fun, and surprising!

Jennyfnf ( ) posted Tue, 26 October 2010 at 3:28 PM

Thanks Merren.  Straightforward information and simple to understand.

Maybe remaining FEUsers would log on to Rendo and then more interest and more FE magic would be on the cards, that is, if the Goup is no longer purely FE.  Or would that be treading on someone's toes?

Keep warm and nurse your pleurisy well.  Time will pass and Summer will be here before you know it for you Kiwis.  The warm weather will help.

Jennyfnf ( ) posted Tue, 26 October 2010 at 3:30 PM

Hello Mies.  Lovely to see you here - one of our most prolific FE posters.

Now here is a girl who knows how to weave her magic:-) Yes, FE is fun and you know how to get the most out of it.

daali ( ) posted Tue, 26 October 2010 at 3:31 PM

Greetings Merr
thanks for your news of Fe,
As you can see we are still in many to be interested in the program

I'll be damned, You're right Merren, it's back, when I tried the link the other day all I got was a 404 code error, but it's there now and all the downloads too.

Me too Lynn....I wonder what is going on here.

FractalFactor ( ) posted Tue, 26 October 2010 at 4:59 PM

It may have really been down--for a short while. What matters is that it is up...

The Internet musta been having a Bad Hair day....or some splinter group of those that think Fractals are only good for Backdrops for their Poser characters were running amok.

It is certainly back now.

Rerewhakaaitu ( ) posted Tue, 26 October 2010 at 5:24 PM

I tried the blankets, Jen. Too sore to lie down.

I'm glad eclectasy is back up. May I suggest that anybody who does't have copies backed up...and up...please backup what you've got. Please?

Sorry, Alida, I forgot to greet you. I do so now. Isn't it a cosy little gathering we have here.

There's place enough on my server, so I can upload the program and spotfiles to my server and than offer them in this thread, or at the free-downloads-pages at renderosity

if anyone want to share their fe-stuff... send it to me, and I will upload it to my server and announce them at the freware-section of renderosity

send it to : j.gribnau@upcmail.nl

dochtersions ( ) posted Wed, 27 October 2010 at 4:19 AM

Great idea and offer, Juliette.

I've search for the freware-section of renderosity, but without any result.
A pity, I have no concentration, because of that constantly pain in face, mouth, eyes, a.s.o.
Just tell me what I need to do, for sharing my spots. You may have them all :)

It is that Karel can't help me now. He is very busy here with that rebuilding, and has a lot of stress with it.
These people don't keep appointments, and did not finish their work while we were so stupid, all paid in advance, and that was really a lot :(.
We are ripped off, by being too trusting.

Sorry, this has nothing to do with the treat, but just that I want to explain, 'my handicaps'

Wishing you all a happy creative day.

I think this must be it Mies:-

http://www.renderosity.com/mod/forumpro/showforum.php?forum_id=12473

I am sad thatyou have trouble with the builders....Never pay up front.  They do not care then how long they make you wait or indeed if they turn up to finish the job. You are yes- too trusting.  Not everyone like you you know.  The world is changing.

You saw your Doctors on Monday?  Did they not prescribe something to help with the pain?  Maybe the anxiety is making you feel worse.  Try not to worry. What's done is done.  You need someone to come and sort them out?  I'll do it.

xx

dochtersions ( ) posted Wed, 27 October 2010 at 5:06 AM

You are such a good friend, dear Jenny.
Thanks for the link, I'll start trying.
Now, I need to clean up the mess here.
I do not worry, 'it comes as it comes'.
No, they can not do anything for the pain.
They gave me many compliments yesterday, by telling the outcome of those tests.
That, I did not expect, so they saw me f.e., as a "good job being" person, and with so many talents.
Tomorrow I must go to the dentist and the dental surgeon maybe too.
But I do not complain; I go, as I said, clean up here.
Must remove all the junk!!! ;-)

Thank you, dear one(s)!!!!

Hi All,

the program can be downloaded here :

www.bodhi-creations.com/fractal-explorer-2-02.zip

including the program and some extra spotfiles that were shared by several highly appreciated fe-artists

I also uploaded it to the free-stuff at renderosity and will let you know when it is approved by the staff of renderosity

One suggestion :  anyone who want to share their spotfiles :  upload them zipped to the free-stuff-gallery at renderosity; they allow a zip up to 50 MB

I am going to zip all my spotfiles right now and offer them there

I will let you know when they are approved buy the staff too

Brilliant Juliette.  You are so helpful.  Now, if I can manage to zip up all my spots......right back to 2004.....here we go again, oh how I have problems with the zippers.  They get stuck and it is not funny.

Juliette.Gribnau ( ) posted Wed, 27 October 2010 at 5:51 AM

I just have uploaded 874 spotfiles to the free-stuff.... going back to 2008... the ones from earlier I lost in a computer crash

I have the habit to save every step I take as a spotfile, but I only save images when a step makes a beauty lol

succes with zipping Jenny

( and all other FE-ers !!!)

That's really helpful, and generous, Juliette. It's amazing to me all the talk and interchanges that go on while I sleep through my night. Here, it is 10,44am on Thursday, so I'm not really behind. It just seems like it, as you all sleep through your nights!

Dear Mies, I hold your hand as you cope with all the horrors of your life. Those darned builders need a good kick! Jenny is right: never pay in full before the job is done, and done well. I'm sending strength and love to Karel as well. I hope your dentists are as kind to you as mine are to me. I share the pain in the face and jaw. My beautiful young maxillo/facial specialists are really beginning to make progress. I have even begun to look forward to seeing them! One thing I love about being old is the freedom to flirt outrageously!!

Now, back to you, Juliette. You are very generous. Thankyou. I have much later versions of FE than 2.02, and will upload them to your server. All versions are zipped inside a big zipped folder that is working with any version you feel like using. I think it's under 50 mb, but will have to check and modify it if necessary.

I think I'll have to split my spots folder or modify it. It will take a bit of time, as my energy is a bit low. I have 12 years' worth of spots!!  My backup practices are very good lol, but not perfect. I don't save discarded spots. Only the ones that I decide to render, but there are a lot, and the file includes thumbs.

Thanks again, Juliette, and I wave with love to all my sleeping friends as I go about my day.
