Subject: Poser Pro Question (not 2011)

Anniebel ( ) posted Mon, 04 April 2011 at 11:57 PM · edited Sun, 22 December 2024 at 7:50 PM

Does the old version of Poser Pro require internet access, like Poser 8 & the new Poser Pro (2011)?

I.E. which library system does it use, the old version like Poser 7, or the new version like Poser 8?

Neither poser 8 or poser pro 2010 require internet access.  you need only access to the local loopback (127.0.0.1:11530)

I don't notice any difference in the library for poser 7 and the first poser pro

Poser 8 & Poser Pro 2011 need some internet access, because you need an up to date flash etc to run the library, which is why I cannot run it on my old computer. I am just wondering if I would be able to run the old Poser Pro on that computer.

Poser Pro is essentially a souped-up version of P7;  it does not have the library system of P8/PP2010.

P8 & PP2010 have a library system which is a separate program;  in order for Poser to be able to talk with the library, they need access to your LAN, but the LAN does not need access to the internet.

Regarding Flash and AIR, if you have access to another computer which can go out on the internet, you could download the updaters for those from Adobe and transfer them by flash drive to your older computer.

Or just let Poser install those components since it COMES with them built in. I don't understand this notion that you have to go on the Internet. Everything you need is built into the Poser installation files.

If you want to get updates directly from Adobe web sites, then yes you would want to (not have to) connect to the Internet, and in that case it would be your computer doing it, not Poser, so that it can get an installation package.

I am just going on what I have read on the forums. I am not able to access the internet at all with my old computer & I didn't think it would cope with Poser 8. I didn't realise the files where built in, so many people reported issues with the library system & it was suggested many times it was due to not having updated internet browser etc. My old computer doesn't even have IE, it is a Dell & the hard drive died & the guy that rebuilt it for me left a lot of stuff off. Funnily enough Poser 7 hasn't crashed once since it was repaired, runs nicely without all the useless crap on the system, but I am without some basics like a calculator, IE etc

My laptop doesn't like Poser much, although Poser 8 IS performing a little better lately since I added it to the DEP exemption list. I just thought the old Poser Pro might be an upgrade from 7 that my older computer would cope with, as I still prefer to do most of my work on that system.

Since you're one of us forward-thinking Aussies, you might follow a true-blue Aussie trend and use FireFox instead of IE. Can't think of a single reason to pine after IE, and lots of reasons to avoid it.

The old Poser Pro is Poser 7 with upgrades, yes. If P7 works, PPro should as well.

Earlier I thought you were talking about Flash and AIR, and my response was regarding those components.

Now we're talking about IE. It is not required that you use IE as your favorite/default browser, but the HTML rendering component of IE is connected to how the Poser library is displayed in Poser 8 and you have to have it installed already, because SM is not allowed to re-distribute it.

Poser 8 requirements, as published by SM, for Windows PC are:

  • Windows 7, Vista or XP
  • 700 MHz Pentium class or compatible (1 GHz or faster recommended)
  • 512 MB system RAM (1 GB or more recommended)
  • OpenGL enabled graphics card or chipset recommended (recent NVIDIA GeForce and ATI Radeon preferred)
  • 24-bit color display, 1024 x 768 minimum resolution
  • 2 GB free hard disk space (4 GB recommended)
  • Internet connection for Content Paradise
  • Windows® Internet Explorer® 7
  • Adobe® Flash® Player 9
  • DVD-ROM drive (physical product only)

Internet access is not among the listed requirements. Please bonk anybody on the head who says otherwise in a forum. Forgive my impatience but I (and others) have been fighting this discredited meme for years now and it will not die despite the clear and unambiguous corrections made over and over.

Note also that if you have Poser Pro 2010, and are using the AIR version of the library, then there is no need for IE or Flash 9. AIR is standalone.

see that is one of the biggest issues for our household about upgrading. Due to the fact that I too, wish to put the p8 to a puter that is not internet connected,,,and I have read in many forums that it has to be connected for the libraries to work.

I do not get that it has to connect to the LAN but not the net?

also is it really worth it or should one wait for p9?

(just read the other thread about gamma control etc and seems like allot of headache)

There are an incredible number of people in this forum willing to say any falsehood with the same certainty as if they were the author of the program in question.

Perhaps you did not know, but I am the author of the Poser library. I designed it. I wrote it.

Quote - I do not get that it has to connect to the LAN but not the net?

It does not require a connection to any network, local (LAN = Local Area Network) or Internet. I use it on airplanes. I use it in the bathroom without a WAN. I use it in the car. I use it all kinds of places where there is no network of any kind whatsoever. Clear?

Quote - also is it really worth it or should one wait for p9?

Nobody knows what is in P9 and if I did know I would not be allowed to talk about it.

Quote - (just read the other thread about gamma control etc and seems like allot of headache)

Most people don't need an airplane either, except when they do, and then it's not a question of airplane versus car anymore, even if both are made by the same company. You either need it or you don't, and if you are not aware that you need it, then by definition you don't need it.

For P8 and PP2010, Poser and its library are two separate processes;  the Local Area Network enables Poser and its library to exchange commands/data.  Think of it as one program communicating with another program in order to cooperate.  You can remove the aethernet cat6 cable from your machine and Poser will still work, because the communication is all inside.  If you have multiple computers behind a router, they can all network render using Queue Manager via the LAN;  no internet connection (WAN) from the router to a modem is needed.

Internet connection requires that the LAN be connected -by aethernet cat6 cable or wireless- out via the Wide Area Network, to the port on your modem.

If you have internet connection, Poser will use it to check for any new service pack updates and to be able to connect to Content Paradise if you're in the content room.  If for some reason you want to prevent this, you can simply look in edit/general preferences to uncheck this feature.

Not quite accurate. The LAN is the network in your house, and people use that word as if you have to be connected to that. You don't.

No cable of any kind, no network adapter, is required to operate the inter-process communication.

It is not the LAN that is used. The LAN is for computer-to-computer communication, locally within the premises.

It is the loopback TCP/IP stack that is used for application-to-application communication, locally within the one computer, that is needed.

Part of the confusion comes from the fact that the TCP/IP stack is used both for intra-computer communication, and also for inter-computer communication, and that firewalls block both. This does not mean that you need to connect to a network, just because you need to tell your firewall not to block Poser. Further, many firewall programs assume you the user is a technical noob and cannot handle the subtle distinction between the question "Should I let Poser talk to itself" versus "Should I let Poser talk to other computers"? As a result, many firewalls ask "Do you want to give Poser access to the Internet?", the user says no, and the firewall shuts Poser out of the communication stack altogether, not just for reaching the Internet. The result is the library stops working. This has nothing to do with the Internet, but the issue is confused by the nature of the question and the assumed action that was taken as a result of the question. The firewall developers are making a gross mistake by glossing over this distinction and it will come to hurt apps a lot more over time. With new computers having ever more numbers of processors, the technique of using inter-process communication to combine the power of multiple CPUs, either in the same machine, or across multiple machines, is going to be more and more common. Users of software, like it or not, are going to have to understand that telling the operating system what to allow or not allow is going to involve separate answers for "the network inside the machine" versus "the network outside the machine".

I understand the graphics community is not a bunch of network engineers like me, but if you're going to use the words that network engineers use, such as LAN, then you have to abide by what they actually mean.

Do you need to connect your Poser computer to the Internet? No.

Do you need to connect your Poser computer to a LAN? No, unless you want to use multiple-computer rendering.

You do not need to connect your Poser computer to anything in order to use Poser with the library. Also, some of the 3rd party libraries also use the internal loopback connection and if you block it, they stop working also.

Just out of interest though, why does the library give an error message if you aren't connected to the internet. I know the library isn't effected, as you can click ok & it still works, but it is annoying - is there anyway to turn it off?

It's not supposed to do that and in the next version it won't. On startup, the library attempts to get information from content paradise on how to do searches - what sort of search options are available. The search options were not hard-coded into the library, but are driven by the data returned from CP, so that the developers of CP could, over time, add new features to the library remotely. When you're not connected to the Internet, CP is unreachable and it's telling you (admittedly not in a nice way) that you're not going to be able to do searches of stuff at Content Paradise.

Even if you do have Internet access, if CP happens to be down or unreachable when you start Poser, it will give the same error information.

As you noted, it's not important at all, since you have no intention of searching CP.
