For hair textures, I found that making my own worked better than using photographic images. I used Kozaburo's hair tutorial but I can't find a link to it now. Apparently he thought the tutorial was out of date and removed it, but I found it extremely valuable. I still have the zip file of the tutotial on my PC. Site mail me if you are interested.

No, that's not Koz's tute. His tute is here - in English.

isnt this the same like the french site?

No, that link I gave above contains the complete tutorial - the html file and all associate image files. Did that other site have all that?

edit: I stand corrected. It did have everything...lol. Well, now you have the option to download it all in one swoop - and in English if you don't speak French ;).

hair has a lot of detail. i think its hard to come close to real hair with hand painted strands.

i think reference is better.

but i agree that you have more control with painted hair

Thanks Laurie for the Kozaburos tutorial. I've been looking for it for ages. :) Also thanks for the link to the texture resource site. Does anyone know how to make a proper texture for a skullcap?

I personally ended up using the method Valea showed in her tutorial to make poser hair. It's a very time consuming method and I haven't textured the hair yet, so I don't know if it will work. But all the other methods seem to produce very plastic looking hair.

I don't know. Sometimes I think it might be worth to really get to know poser's hair room. Perhaps dynamic hair has a lot of potential after all? Dynamic clothing certainly looks good.

D'oh! Why do things that happen to stupid people keep happening to me?

Online Now!

The basic problem with photo reference hair is the baked in specular associated with the way the shot is taken.  As Nanette stated, perhaps generating your own may produce better results.

BTW, does hair dye sites have reference photos of each of their products?  Makeup sites have color chips, why not hair coloring?

Quite a few hair color charts here. If you use jcpicker, you can snag the colors from them :). Google images are a wonderful thing...lol.

if you have photoshop you can get rid of the soft shadows and highlights in hair.

Thank you for posting that link, Laurie, I just couldn't find it.

Ice-boy, yes, you can remove specular from hair images, though they seem to look a bit faded after you have done it. For me, the biggest shortcoming of hair photographs was aligning and scaling it with the flow of hair vertices. Someone with better UV-mapping skills than me might not think that is a problem.

The main hair colour sites do have colour swatches, and you can use those to pick up colours to draw hair textures with.

Making hair textures, as in Koz's tutorial, can look a lot better if you start with a large texture map and scale it down. You can get finer details that way. At least that's what I do in Photoshop ;).

I asked koz to do a tute on those hairtex w/hilites, but he said it's very complicated.  leaving them out makes it easier, unless yer taking photos of somebody's hair with a flash camera or in the sun, in which case it'll have hilites.  in case nobody mentioned this, try getting an orthographic photo, e.g. by scanning hair.  it may work pretty good for long straight hair, but maybe not too good for others.

is Kozaburo still making hair for poser?
