you can get really close to that, but the muscles are not bump map/displacement on that figure, those are modeled..........this looks like a zbrush creation and render

I have used zbrush before and it's quite powerful.I played around with the lighting and bump maps a little bit with daz3d and i think i am getting the hang of it.The shadow samples was still at default so i ramped it all the way up to 64.
And i discovered the Normal map feature which i am more familiar with.I'm still learning quite a lot when it come's to daz3d and i must say that it's the easiest app so far when it comes to posing and animating a character.
You have the option in Daz Studio to use the 3Delight render engine which is built in or LuxRender by means of 3rd party plug-ins and POVRay as well by exporting the scene as an OBJ. 3Delight and LuxRender support HDR as well
To get that "feel" of that render LuxRender would probably be the best bet.

Yes but displacement in Reality does not work well in my experience.
What problems do you have with displacements in Reality? I cannot complain about them...

short answer - yes you can.
If you have the Advanced version of DS3 or 4, you can use Uber Environment2 to make lighting more realistic and the Human Surface Shader to adjust the surface settings.
Good lighting should include not just full illumination lights but also just specular (to make the highlights pop).
As for shadow depends on how sharp you need the shadows to be. Raytraced shadows are created in real time as the render progresses, which means that a render can take MUCH longer if you have many raytraced lights. They are far more accurate BUT, even at the softest setting, are still quite sharp. Mapped shadows are softer but are precalculated and created before the render starts. Sometimes a combination of 1 raytraced 1 shadowmapped can yield the desired result.
