Poser - OFFICIAL F.A.Q (Last Updated: 2024 Nov 02 2:25 pm)
Since some people use both Poser and Daz Studio, I thought it would be of some interest on this forum--especially since Daz is giving away Daz Studio Pro 4 for free (and it also has the Genesis exporter for Poser). However, only the Pro version of V5 is anatomically correct--so this free offer may not be too interesting to people who need anatomic correctness in their images.
Do you know hat issue number that is? I went to the local Barnes and Noble, and their copies did not have anything but discs with tutorials. Incidentally, $15.00 for a magazine is not free, but if there is enough content it is not a bad deal. Who knows. At some future time I might want this.

It's the March issue, #153. Our B&N is usally at least a month behind.
If you install V5 into Studio and export Genesis, the morphs are incorporated , and they should be able to be used in Poser.-it worked for me with head morphs You need to export a Genesis for every UV set you plan to use.
Genesis exported this way generally works well in Poser (However, the Studio version I tried exporting from resulted in a figure that exploded when Restore Figure was applied), but I haven't tried exporting conforming clothes.
Phil Cooke has a Genesis WW2 plugin; haven't tried it.

Daz has had a change of management since then. Interestingly, the new management appears every bit as good at stirring up anger and hysteria among their customers. The old management alienated many Poser customers, the new, the Daz loyalists. And in both cases, they were trying to do good. Hope we don't lose what has been a good company over all this. The real enemy, of course, is the economy. But no one wants to be seen yelling at the economy.
Funny Tomsde- I rarely use males in my renders.. :-) Thanks for the tip.
I had V5 briefly when I briefly had Daz4 Advanced-(returned due to not working well with my 1st gen Mac Pro (Xeon Quad). It's a nice morph. No renders to show-since it kept bugging out on me. But-nice. Caveat: DS4 evidently works well with certain (all?) recent Macs- particularly the MacBook Pro.And I repaired permissions, and updated to 10.6.8.
But I'm keeping Pro- since it's free.- so it might be worth a magazine purchase.
Wait- maaaybe Daz is a front for the Illuminati? I think that somewhere coded in the Mona Lisa is information on the future World Domination Plans...

IMO DAZ made a mistake when they did not make V5 a stand alone figure that could be used equally in Poser or in DAZ studio. There are people out there who are still using Poser 5 (heck I still have Poser 4 on my external drive, but I use just the runtime because of all the crap that I had installed into that program.). I'm not saying that they shouldn't have had their Genesis system or the weight mapping that works only in Studio, I'm just saying to have made the greatest amount of profit they should also have had a stand alone V5 and M5 figure for the general Poser market. But then again, the newest PS3 machines are no longer backward compatible and will no longer play PS2 and PS1 games. Big shame that. I'm not getting rid of my PS3 machine because it still is compatible and will play those game format discs. Even though I bought the hype and went and got DAZ Studio 4 Pro last night, I'm not sure I'm even going to install the program. Genesis and V5 are not that much of an interest for me because of the hoops you have to go through just to get it into Poser. I guess I was more lured by Bryce 7 Pro (and my room mate wanted Hexagon). So even though I fell for the lure, I'm not on the Genesis/V5 bandwagon because its not installable/workable with Poser, which is my program of choice.
And no, I'm not DAZ bashing here. I'm just think they made a bad marketing decision with the direction they went with Genesis.

It will be interesting to see how it all pans out, I was skeptical about Genesis when it came out until I tried it--now I'm hooked. I'm not ready to jettison Poser and keep hoping for more decent looking Poser humans that I can use in that program because frankly I get bored with reworking the same models over and over again. Yes, it would be nice to have the best of both worlds, so to speak--but then people would most likely complain that they don't want to have to buy multiple versions of the same character. I would be interesting if a 3rd party vendor could come up with some sort of Poser plug-in that would make Genesis work with Poser--it would solve a lot of issues for a lot of people.
As I understand it, Poser Python currently doesn't have access to some of the rigging functions that would be needed to add morphs with new joint centers to an existing library figure, which would be needed to add new characters, such as the Genesis gorilla; the scuttlebutt is that some of these Python commands may be added in SR2.
However, DAZ would need to have someone program the necessary scripts and build everything in Poser format...

I agree, been trying Genesis and it is rather fun. Enough I spent some dollars for Genesis content. Say goodbye to M4/V4.
As for how it works out. I hope Daz hasn't shot themselves in the foot one too many times. Genesis got a lot of their Poser users in an uproar. Now this giveaway has gotten many of their loyal Daz users all lathered up. In this ecomony you can't afford to lose ANY customers.
I'd like to see a similar system in Poser. Doesn't have to be Genesis. Just something with similar flexibility. I'm not abandoning Poser. I like it very much.
Ran the 3 newly free programs thru my cart a few days ago and still have not downloaded all of them yet.
But I am going to install DS4 Pro one of these days and try it out. I think...
Currently using Poser Pro '10 with no plans at the moment to upgrade it. Unless of course SM makes me an offer I cannot confuse, I mean refuse.
Or, they could just send me lots of money to get a new system first, then buy their software. That way, nothing gets devalued, they make a sale and I get the kit I want. Everyone wins. :)
A new car would be nice, too. And I've had my eye on this really cool Les Paul. And a new pitch shifter. And a new wah pedal.
Works for me.

Re: the point that Daz should have released a version of V5 for Poser; that is, not based on Genesis.
I think that unless V5 fixed Vicky's joint issues and other design flaws they never got around to correcting, there wouldn't be much point in releasing a Poser version of the Genesis V5. It would just be another body shape.
For all intents and purposes, the Poser community created the real V5 with the weightmapped-V4. The "official" Daz V5 is just a body shape for Genesis that they decided arbitrarily would be called V5. A lot more people bought it (and the V5 bundles) than if it had been sold as just another Genesis female morph, so the strategy was quite effective.
Does V5 look that much like V4? I'm not a good judge. V5 pro also has Vickies nasty bits--isn't that a first? I know that V1/V2 had no gens. It certainly seems that V4 is no where near going into retirement as I see new stuff for her every week--she has some many characters and morphs. The real benefit of Genesis is that V5 can be combined with other female forms to create a totally new look in a blended way that is not likely easily acheived with the V4 version.

Not exactly free but SM have a Valentine Sale for them.

That is an amazing 50% off-it's only 40%
SM did give Debut away in December, but only for a few days...

Oh, it said only 40% in the email I received. I think they have made a typing error.
I am glad if you feel that is a good deal.
I am not interested in comparisons with other products right now.
I have Poser Debut and Poser8. I bought both. I bought P8 during a sale a few months before P9 and P2012PRO were released. I think it was dishonourable for SM to push P8 (through a sale) when they were planning to bring out the new iterations such a short time later, which essentially makes P8 obsolete. They knew exactly what they were doing and decided to milk customers for as much as they could get. I am sure many customers, including myself, would have saved their money and waited for P9 if we had known it would be available in so short a time after getting P8. Many people, including myself, have limited resources, and as good as this sale appears to many, I can't take advantage of it.
Now, this is not a comment on the value of Poser software. It is a comment on business practices and ethics. This naturaly has an effect on customer satisfaction.
This is not something I am interested in debating. I present it simply as my experience. You have some similar sentiments in the DAZ community as a result of DAZ 4 PRO being made available for free.
When Poser 4 came out it was selling for about $600 without an upgrade. I had to wait until I got a special price to be able to afford it--same thing with Photoshop. Poser without an upgrade is now a lot more affordable for people, then SM also offered a preorder on the upgrade to 9 of only $79.00--which I considered to be a steal--considering I could easily spend that much on content alone in one foul swoop. Most software companies offer deep discounts on outgoing versions before a new one is released--Adobe not as much but they may offer $50 off or something. The changes between Poser 8 and 9 were more subtle than sweeping--Poser 8 is still a good version which produces good results so you can hold off until some time in the future when they may offer a better discount that you find more affordable. Oh and I just realized I made a mistake above, the Black Friday special was for 60%--not 50%.
At least SM offers non-linear upgrades, that is you don't have to have the directly preceding version in order to get the upgrade price on the next version. E-on requires you to have the last version of a program to get the best upgrade price and if you have the version before that you end up paying substaitailly more. I had bought 2 versions of Vue Infinite thinking that I'd continue to get affordable pricing--but since Vue has "gone Hollywood" and is now used in many major motion pictures they've jacked up the price of Infinite so much even with an upgrade I couldn't afford it--I had to settle for a lesser version with the old interface which I don't like as much. Such in the world of software. Since Poser is used by a lot of graphics designers for ad work, book covers, comic books, and magazine articles we're lucky they haven't raised the price on it further.
A few years ago I enquired about how much an upgrade of Vue would be if I skipped a version and it turned out that I would be still, more or less, be paying for the upgrade for the version I hadn't had plus the upgrade price for the current version. The price of Vue is getting so high and new versions coming out so frequently that it is impossible for a hobbyist to keep up. In this respect I think Poser is excellent value considering you can skip versions and still get the same price for the upgrade. Except for ZBrush I think the SM way is one of the most generous in this field.
E-on wants you to buy a monthly membership promises the next version of the software as soon as it comes out--but if you add up the monthly payments you're still paying the same amont. I may not want ot have to upgrade to every version of s program--in fact I've already skipped certain Photoshop upgrades in the past--it's good that not every company makes you upgrade every version in order to not loose your upgrade price.

I saw on Facebook that 3D World Magazine this month included Victoria 5 for free--not only the figure but stuff for her as well. I haven't bought V5, and although I don't use females in my renders frequently, it might be worth buying the magazine just to get her.
