Subject: SSS On a Leather Coat?

Latexluv ( ) posted Wed, 15 February 2012 at 5:33 PM · edited Sun, 24 November 2024 at 4:18 PM

I am working on an M4 character and the duster coat is a very important part of the character's persona. I just wondered if you could use P2012's SSS on a leather coat and how would the shader be set up?

I dont know.. but I'm listening for an answer.. I've been wondering  for a while about how to incorporate sss in clothing materials

Glitterati3D ( ) posted Wed, 15 February 2012 at 5:45 PM

Perhaps not an answer, but you might want to take a look at this freebie.  He/She used SSS on the materials, and they are a lovely addition to any runtime:

Hmm, I had downloaded those but had not read that some of the material were built using SSS. I'll check that out. But I'm still waiting to see if some material guru will come and give an opinion. I could try using BB's Scatter + Blinn set up on the coat and see what it looks like.

You could also add the Poser SSS in the material room to see what it looks like.

You know, it wouldn't be too hard to use EZSkin to add SSS to a leather coat - just treat it as another figure.

Hee hee, talk slowly and use small words when you explain how to do that! :)

EZSkin allows users to add support for additional figures by adding definitions to the ezskin.xml file included with the distribution. Instructions for doing so are in the readme.txt file in the zip file.

There's no reason why a leather coat couldn't be treated as another figure. After all, leather is skin, sort of :-)

I'm happy to help more if you need it, but if you fancy giving this a try I suggest you have a go yourself first (it's quite easy, I think) and then if you get stuck at any point you can ask for specific help then.

Okay, I'll give that a try tonight. I really want a coat that looks like this one tho.

I guess what you have to figure is not just the node set up for an sss leather but also the parameter values.  I mean yes leather is skin, but it possibly doesnt have the same qualities as living skin which the sss skin shaders are designed to approximate.  I'm just a bit lost as to where to start defining the properties it may have.

This is the M4 Cowboy Duster with a leather shader and Poser SSS.

Okay, using an older Leather shader that BB made and using the SSS macro, I've got this. The problem, I realized, with this coat, is that it unrealistically has no buttons or button holes.

leather is quite shiney, and light does not go deep in leather as it does in human skin.

Okay, totally frustrated now. None of the trench coats that I have will work for this project. I even tried two that I had converted from M3 with Crossdresser. So, if any modelers are out there, please look at the photo I posted. I want a coat similar to that. Closed on the front with a few straps. Tight in the arms and chest and flairs out at the bottom, and ankle length! Not calf length, not knee length--ankle length, nearly brushing the floor. Thanks, rant over. :)

Hello,

I tried that as well, as leather is made of skin.  See for example the render here: http://www.renderosity.com/mod/gallery/index.php?image_id=2286957&user_id=475250&np&np

(Cannot post nodes right now, as the scene is on another computer, will post them later).

Don't overdo the SSS effect, as leather is quite thick.

Best regards,

   Michael

Michael314 ( ) posted Sat, 18 February 2012 at 12:01 PM

Hello,

some final explanations: (units were meters), the image map node is just a regular tilable leather texture (I think from the set "PD into leather" here at RMP).

Color can be tweaked as required.

Best regards,

   Michael

Probably not exactly what you're after, with wanting to have an SSS node in leather, but I'll just throw it in anyway ... just in case  =)

Have you tried BB's Leather?

To be found here: http://sites.google.com/site/bagginsbill/free-stuff/leather

Quite amazing stuff, very flexible and versatile, I might add :)

Okay, I made a quickie texture and combined it with one of BB's Leather Shaders and got this.

Been having fun testing out the coat all day! I found that Kobaltkween's Metalic Lycra shaders look nice on the coat too, but I wanted leather. I've now got the character in the scene he's supposed to go in. I know you're supposed to use one infinite for sunlight but it sure doesn't look like sunlight to me.

The Leather Coat for M4 is in Rendo freestuff now, so anyone who wants to play around can.

MistyLaraCarrara ( ) posted Tue, 21 February 2012 at 11:58 AM

i tried using the material room wacro to add SSS to a dress.

the node says skin scatter, but it doesn't have the drop down arrow for skin, apple, etc options.
