Subject: Corrupted download files?

pzrite ( ) posted Sat, 19 May 2012 at 4:48 AM · edited Thu, 07 November 2024 at 2:39 PM

During the past 24 hours (while Daz is updating its website)  I made two purchases from the store.  The first one I purchased and downloaded Friday morning.  The file downloaded completely, then I went to run the .exe installer file and first Windows asked if the file installed correctly (no, it didn't do anything at all) so I tried again using the suggested settings.  Again nothing happened.   So I thought the download was bad.  I downloaded the file 3 times, and each time when I tried to run the installer, nothing happened.

Then I made another purchase about an hour ago.  Same exact thing happened.

I tried running it in admin mode, different compatibility modes....nothing.

I think it's more than a coincidence that the two product installers have the same problem, but I can't understand how or why a downloaded file from the Daz store could behave this way?  Usually Windows will tell you if the downloaded file is incomplete or corrupted, but the file seems fine.  The three different times I downloaded the first one, they all have the exact same file size.

It's like it starts to run when you click on it, and then poof the installation process just goes away like you never tried to run the file. It doesn't even make it to the first splash screen, just the little blue circle "wait" symbol spins for a couple of seconds, then it goes away and that's it!

Has anyone else recently downloaded a product from DAZ have this kind of problem?

Gladiator Sandals for V4- 7.25 MB

Bijou Character and Hair (two files) -37 MB and 1.2 MB

I tried downloading and running on my desktop PC and on my laptop.  The first time on each I got the Windows message (as soon as I clicked on the file): "Program may not have installed correctly - Would you like to try reinstalling?"  I clicked on yes, and again, nothing happened at all.

Windows will not tell you if the file is incomplete. You probably need to flush your browser cache and try the download again. Rename the old file to something.BAD and when you download the new one, compare the sizes. If the installer launches, and you never get the splash screen, the file is corrupted. To flush the cache on Firefox, go to Tools > Clear Recent History. For IE, it is in Internet Settings.

I had no problems with 2 recent downloads.

pzrite ( ) posted Sat, 19 May 2012 at 11:04 PM · edited Sat, 19 May 2012 at 11:13 PM

Thanks I already tried that.  I cleared everything in Firefox including cookies, cache, etc. I changed the name of the old file, and I tried downloading it again.  The file size was exactly the same as the previous downloads and unfortunately still does not want to run.

But I did discover something interesting though.  The other files that I have recently downloaded that did work are newer products with file names like "13141_B2BasicsJane.exe".  It is only the two older products with the old naming system like "ps_ac1826_productname.exe" are the ones that are NOT working.

It's also possible that there's a cached copy on a server between you and DAZ - though unlikely. If it's a very old installer, which I don't think it would be, did you cancel the Search dialogue at the very beginning of the process, if it appeared (if not, try restarting your system and then cancel the search dialogue on the first installer you run). I will try getting an older file from the new site and see if it works for me.

pzrite ( ) posted Sun, 20 May 2012 at 7:24 AM · edited Sun, 20 May 2012 at 7:25 AM

Well as I said, these files (the two products) had the same result on my PC and my laptop, while all the other files worked fine.  I didn't get a search dialogue, only a few times I got a "Did this software install correctly?" dialogue, mere seconds after I clicked on the .exe file.  Most other times, I clicked on them, got the spinning blue circle for a couple of seconds and then nothing else happened.

I tried rebooting on each computer and clearing the cache and cookies.

I get exactly the same issue with the Gladiator Sandals - and the file is apparently the same as before, since it has the old-style icon. Going to report this to DAZ though obviously I can give no promise about how quickly it will be dealt with.

Pzrite..Thank You! At least now I know I am not the only one with this problem. I have tried to download an item I purchased on the 17th and the item had 2 files to download. Both files downloaded but when I tried to run them nothing happened. Same as you, I tried in Admin mode and I tried with 2 different browsers too and on my PC and lap top. Nothing happened. I tried to contact Daz using their contact page. They have an address there : cs@daz3d.com

I got an email from Britney saying they dont use that website anymore and to use a submit a request green button on the contact page. I tried that but got an error page. I wrote Britney back and told her I am getting error page and she wrote back saying "keep Trying". So..I did but still keep getting error pages. I cleared all caches too and cookies..still will not work.

I am lost on what to try next..

Here is the link of the item I bought:

http://www.daz3d.com/shop/sport-balls

The installer has a icon that looks like a circle with a red Z in the middle and a red arrow under the Z pointing to the left and then a small floppy disk to the right of the arrow.

Thanks Richard!

pzrite ( ) posted Sun, 20 May 2012 at 1:48 PM

Yeah, I get a  "page not found" error whenever I click on that "Submit a Help Request" button too.  I hate to complain but its bad enough that all this stuff isn't working but to have a customer service rep give you such uninformed information as to "keep on trying" is just like pouring salt on an open wound.  I think at the very least the customer service staff should be made aware of what's going on (what's working and what's not working)

Digitell ( ) posted Sun, 20 May 2012 at 1:59 PM

Yeah..it has been very frustrating and I hope that by next week we can get some help with our purchases...I sent Britney a request for a refund but she has not responded to me anymore.

I have this situation with an order I bought yesterday. It's "PD Cruiser" a sci-fi flying car. Seems an oldish product, the installer has the floppy disk icon with the DAZ symbol on it. My other two orders were fine: Aiden and the Rennaissance outfit.

Zendesk still not working. Also the link on the Contact Us page that goes to the forums: www.daz3d.com/forums hides the URL http://www.daz3d.com/shop/help/help-contact-us/ which is the page you are actually on.

Digitell ( ) posted Sun, 20 May 2012 at 2:24 PM

Hi FyranNyanser..so maybe it is the installer is old?? Hopefully when Daz gets things in order they will provide us with a link that works..zip file maybe? Would be nice!

RHaseltine ( ) posted Sun, 20 May 2012 at 2:31 PM

Yes, the ones with the (old) DAZ logo seem, so far, to be the ones that aren't working from the new store. I tried my archived copy of the Gladiator Sandals ins taller and it ddi work, so the finger seems to be pointing at something to do with the transfer to the new store.

Digitell ( ) posted Sun, 20 May 2012 at 2:52 PM

Thank you Richard for looking into this... so hopefully Daz will provide us with a working link to our purchases?

Many Thanks

pzrite ( ) posted Sun, 20 May 2012 at 2:54 PM

Okay thanks Richard, we're making progress.  I'll just need to have my downloads reset when the problem is sorted out.

I also tried disabling my anti-virus programs.  I have Bitdefender on my PC and ESET on my laptop.  That didn't help.

kyoto_kid ( ) posted Sun, 20 May 2012 at 7:27 PM

...this is interesting...

I picked up Faveral's Ultralight when it was the freebie of the week but couldn't DL it from home.  When I went to my local hotspot to DL it I received the following error message:

Sorry, there was an error getting requested content. Please contact store owner.

...and took up one DL attempt.

It still shows on the order and my Downloadable Products list with a 0:00$ cost.  It hasn't been pulled form the store either.

Same item and message for me.

Fortunatally, I checked and found I'd already downloaded it from the old store.

I'd used 3DContentDownloader, at the old store. And I habitually clear the files after download... so the files shouldn't have shown up again, at the store (unless I'd forgotton to clear them).

And now it might get a little weird... I just now installed it (to test). I'm positive I didn't install it before...

14292_Ultralight_1.0_ds and 14292_UltralightMetaData_1.0_ds installed fine. But when it got to 14292_Ultralight_1.0_dpc it wanted to uninstall the "previous version".

And now I have two copies each, in Content Manager's search results, of the ultralight and its prop guard.

Is the dpc supposed to go to my poser content, and the 1st two to DS4 library, or something? (Pardon the remarkably stupid question, I don't always catch up to new things, nor pay much attention to what I install).

.

SickenlySweete ( ) posted Sun, 20 May 2012 at 10:52 PM

yes the 1.0_ds is a studio format file and the 1.0_dpc is the poser files.

for some items you do not need to install both.

i would say if it wants to uninstall then you don't need it unless your using poser

...looks like I'm out of luck for the time being as I wasn't able to DL it until after the new store came online. At least there is no money at stake so I'll just wait until things settle down and reset the DL later.

The odd thing however, I was able to successfully DL Valandar's Treasure Chests which was also a weekly Freebie that I put in my cart when the old store was still up.

Same problem here.

Serenity Arches and Celestial, purchased over the weekend, won't run.

Meanwhile, Angel Noel, purchased in an earlier order, redownloads fine.

Spit ( ) posted Mon, 21 May 2012 at 7:45 AM

I had reset an older file to test the RESET process.

As it turns out it is a much much older file (ps_mo076b_ChargerPose). I just tried to install and, like those above, it does not work.

The fact the problem shows up with new purchases, purchases sitting in downloads a while, and resets leads me to believe that the process of 'preparing a file for download' through moving it to a different server and/or caching is messed up for these files. Perhaps a header byte is mangled.

(I actually ran into this before, long ago, on a can-you-believe C64 talking with a quantum server.)

UPDATE*****

Heard from Daz just now..received an email noting that they are aware of the problem and they are working on fixing it as quickly as they can. So I am sure we will be able to receive our items one way or other "soon" ;)

Just wanted to let you guys know that they know about the issue and have acknowledged it.

Cheers!

Yeah, I just got an email too.  I appreciate that I got any response at all (including all the responses from Richard) but I was kind of hoping that after the weekend we'd find everything working again on Monday.  I guess that was too big of a thing to hope for.

Oh well....patience....

Anyone else get any joy with their downloads being fixed?

After almost a week I found a working email address and asked DAZ support for help.

Just got back a stock letter with general advice about clearing caches etc, which I'd been doing all week, and no reference to the problems we've been having with older files on the new store.

I wrote back, pointing them to this thread, and heard nothing since.

pzrite ( ) posted Sat, 26 May 2012 at 10:39 AM

I actually had someone from Daz send me a working file for one of the two downloads I've been trying to install.  And it worked.  Maybe if you tell them that, they can send you a file too.

I almost deleted it because I didn't read the Daz email first, and I saw this other email from a 3rd party download site saying that I had a file to download.  I thought it was a scam/trojan virus at first until I read the Daz email.

Digitell ( ) posted Sat, 26 May 2012 at 10:39 AM

I never got any help either using the support help email. I finally sent a PM to Ann over there at Daz and shortly after that someone emailed me a zip file that contained the item. Seems that the older installers will no longer work. I suggest sending a PM over at Daz to "DAZ_ann0314"..shortly after I sent her the PM I got some help. But you may not get any help until next week this being a holiday weekend :(

**.
**

This is due to server problems.

Error messages get appended to the ends of downloaded files.

Likely also the cause of Antivirus false positives, on some files. (Such as ManleyStanley reported, in that other thread).

Kendall Sears has written a utility to fix it. It can also be manually fixed with a hex editor.

I'll assume it's ok to post links, to the two threads at Daz Forums:

This page, of this thread, has the utility:

http://www.daz3d.com/forums/viewthread/217/P60

This is another thread:

http://www.daz3d.com/forums/viewthread/217/

And Daz just shut down for the blowtorches and cranes... Let's hope they're stomping this bug, now.

Well last night I was helping Kendall test out the utility. One was made for a 32 bit system and one for 64 bit. I tested both. I have Windows Vista on my 32bit and Windows 7 on my 64bit.

The 32bit with Vista would not work, but the 64 bit with Windows 7 worked fine.

I told Kendall the results and Kendall said that the 32bit seemed to work with XP and Windows 7 but not Vista.

The 64bit..dont know if it was tested on a Vista or not but it worked good on the Windows 7.

Yes.  Thanks Digitell for your testing yesterday.  I recompiled the two executables and, so far, no one is complaining about having any problems.

EDIT:  I wanted to mention that the utility will work on any filetype that comes from the DAZ servers with the type of errors seen so far.  The release candidates are also affected and the utility is tested good against them as well.

It is really a pretty common problem.  It has to do with the way  php deals with files.

There is another possibility for a fixing program. This could probably be done as a Tcl script. The advantage of that would be that the same script would run on any platform and operate on any file. The disadvantage would be that anybody wanting to use it would have to download and install a Tcl interpreter (free). There are Tcl interpreters for Mac, Windows, Linux, you name it. As long as all the damaged files end with "0AFatal error: ..." it would be easy to have a Tcl script operate on a large number of files all at once. Should I have a go at this, or is the problem well in hand by now? Any indications Daz has fixed this problem on their side? More info on Tcl:

krsears ( ) posted Wed, 30 May 2012 at 3:34 PM

On Posix systems it takes 2 commands:  "grep -b ..."  followed by "truncate"

Both of these commands are available natively on MacOS and Linux.  And can be installed from any of a dozen packages for Windows.  The functionality can also be created in Perl, Ruby, Rexx, and others.  Again, all of these are available for all platforms.

I wrote the exe, simply because those not interested/capable of using a Hexeditor would want something simple, small, and easy.

Yeah, I get that. It turns out I haven't had any corrupted downloads yet, or I might have done it already. I use Tcl a lot. It kind of depends on how long this problem persists and how much of a burden supporting a fix becomes. Frankly, Daz has so much egg on face right now, they could feed omelettes to everybody...

I vaguely recall when I joined DAZ last August that there were some install files that were giving a false error.  The consensus then was that it did install okay, just ignore.

jestmart ( ) posted Wed, 30 May 2012 at 9:30 PM

To AtticAnne.  The issue you are talking about is different.  On Windows 7, and I think Vista, the installers would do their thing then when done an error window would pop with the message that the installer may not worked properly.  This was most likely the result of Windows UAC security/babysitter.  The recent issue is with older installers simply not working.  We Windows people are now in the same boat as Mac people when it comes to old installers.

Actually, the problem with old Mac installers is worse, because the only workaround for that is far more painful. This problem was easy to fix. Mac users have to run the Windows installer on a Windows machine, or use a VM. That means paying the Microsoft tax even if they have no other reason to go near it. They hate that...

FWIW, I do have a Tcl script now.

In order to test my Tcl script, I had to write another one to "break" the files.  As reported earlier, only certain generations of Daz installers are affected, meaning they will not run. It turns out that I did have some files with the extra junk at the end, but they ran anyway. These were the last 2 recent generations of installers. The last clean download I had was the Ultralight on 5/16/2012. Anything I downloaded after that does have the junk in it, but I didn't download any of the older installers after that date. I took one of my old installers that I downloaded before 5/16 and was clean then "broke" it with the break script, and the fix script fixed it. If anybody has files that need breaking, I can do that too.
