Subject: Dimension Theory's Interjection Turns M4 Red

sandman_max ( ) posted Tue, 22 May 2012 at 8:02 AM · edited Wed, 04 December 2024 at 11:02 AM

I've been trying everything I can think of to get Injection to work.  The promo shots are beautiful.  But M4 face looks like he's got a lightbulb (one that lit, too) inside his mouth.  The little icons say to turn down specularity, but how much?  I've got the shadows on all my lights set to ray-traced, so that's done.  But I can't the red mouth and nose area to look normal.  If anybody has any suggestions about how to work with Interjection, I'd love to hear them.

I turned off the ambient that is on all the mouth parts...that helped keep the face from glowing too much.

As I'm having that same Problem and am a bit... well I guess... to dumb to see exactly what to do... would you be so nice to give me a hand in understanding what exactly needs to be done? I guess I'd be on the right way with the actual "name" of the ambient thing that has to be changed / turned off... these settings are 'all greek' to me. Your Help would be very much appreciated :)

It's the textures plugged into the SSS.  I got his first interjection product, whch I was totally dissatisfied with and returned.  A lot of people actually returned it, especially people with better knowledge on DS's SSS.  I don't have the M4 version but I'm assuming it's the same thing.

What happens here, if I recall, is his settings are too red and the textures blows the mouth and other areas out of proportion and makes them look unnatural.  Honestly don't know why his promos don't show as much as when people use them, he's done something extremely tricky, but looking closely you can still see that "too much" areas (such as the mouth).  I don't recommend the product but wish there were a better product out there.  If you can work in an art program, however, you can tone down that red on the textures, also change the SSS color in DS to not be so red.  You can also work on the diffuse color, turn it a tad blue.  It's best to actually learn these properties then have to buy product to do the work you have no control or knowledge of.

Also ambient is unnatural for character settings.  People don't have "ambient".  Ambient should actually be called "glow", as when you render things with ambients on in dark renders, they glow depending on strength and color, blocking the lights/shadows.  That's not natural and should only be used for glowing effect.  Or simply a cheat thing to make characters brighter in renders (which I never do).

I'll be releasing my new character soon though, with SSS and proper SSS textures, just so you know.

Here is how to turn the ambient off on the mouth inner parts.

thank you for the insight, jamminwolf. I guess my mind will take a while to understand that all, but someday it will click ^^

and a big thanks for the screenshot rawnrr! this is exactly what I needed to understand a bit more and geht the problem solved - hopefully :)

I am not a fan of using ambients to get sss effects anyway.

I think DT is working on a new version that doesnt use ambients.

I have been playing around with SSS effects in some upcoming sets....so I think you will be seeing alot more SSS stuff being used in ds4. It does really do some cool things.

Sorry jamminwolf but I don't agree, I use both of DT's injection products and like them both. The first product (the one with settings for M4) does require some tweaking, the ambient does need altering or turning off the other setting that can need lowering is the susurface strength and the subsurface group.

You need to check that there are specular maps being used if the texture has them they can sometimes be removed by Injection depending on where they are placed, if this has happened put the, back. If the character has no soec maaps use ones from another M4 texture set. the

First render, Morris' Lazarus texture, inj medium, no tweaking.

Second render, same texture and lights, ambient turned off, Subsurface strength 70%, subsurface group 3.

Lights used 1 distant light raytraced shadows, and 1 uber light.

Wow!  Now I'm going to have to check my settings.  I'm fairly confident in making changes in surfaces, just not always what affect each will have.  I had no idea that Ambient was the glow affect and that people didn't need it.  It may be turned on - I'll check when I get home.  I know at one point I had SSS turned down to 7%, changed the color to pale pink and M4's mouth was still glowing red, so obviously I missed something.  Tparo's "no tweaking" example is actually one I could live with. Mine was MUCH worse - like I said "lightbulb in the mouth".  I'll play around with it some more tonight and post examples if I can't get it improved.

Oh - one other thing.  The character texture that I'm using is an older Poser 6/7 pack and it only has a diffuse map and bump map.  I used ShaderMap to generate a spec map and displacement map.  The spec map is pretty dark, so I don't think that's going to be much of a problem but I did drop the Specularity strength to 50% (I have NO idea what ballpark that's supposed to be in - it's not used in original settings and Interjection set it to 100%).  And does matter if the maps are .bmp or .jpg?

Mouth inner parts?  I almost missed that!  I bet that's the lightbulb problem...

If you have M5 look at the settings for the Philip texture they are excellent textures and the settings might give you some more idea how the SSS works.

Jamminwolf, I know that you have personal issues with me at this point so please refrain from talking about my products in such a negative fashion before promoting your own like that.  It's not appreciated.  I was more than grateful and respectful for the testing you did for me, as was I generous.  You know this.

As for the set in question, there were a number of fixes and updates posted on the Daz forums that obviously are having issues right now.  There were ambient modifiers to help fix the issues with that, as well as a simple lighting preset that will give results closer to the promos without work (just a distant light and UberEnv with raytraced soft shadows).  Give me a few and I will link to them here.

Thank you DimensionT :) Very much appreciated! That will help me - the total noob especially when it comes to Skinshaders - very very much :)

jamminwolf ( ) posted Tue, 22 May 2012 at 6:59 PM

DT, gonna sitemail you.

My open comment here, my recommendation wasn't according to the "issue", I still bought it after this so called "issue", but wasn't happy after many testings.  You're right, I shouldn't have mentioned what I have coming after saying that, I did bite my lip all day at work lol kicks self  So I apologize.  I still recommended your CloudNine lights though.

And the light preset...

I have the SimpleSoftLight and had done a test render, which was quite nice.  But I had messed with the settings so much, I wasn't sure if it was the change in lights or the changed settings.  So I didn't want to muddy the water by mentioning it.  I'll get the ambience modifiers and reset everything and try again.

By the way, I really love the Simple Soft Light.

wallace3d ( ) posted Wed, 23 May 2012 at 11:06 PM

i beleive that the SSS is designed for UberEnvironment lighting or Raytrace shadows ON all lights

jamminwolf ( ) posted Thu, 24 May 2012 at 1:15 AM

Good advice!  I have UE (UberEnvironment) up as well as shadows (raytrace) on lights all the time, never use shadowless (or deep shadow map) lights nor can I go without UE.

tparo ( ) posted Thu, 24 May 2012 at 2:28 AM

I use Deep shadow maps most of the time don't have the patience for raytraced when theres transmaps involved.

Zev0 ( ) posted Thu, 24 May 2012 at 6:00 AM

Does the effect work with deep shadows? I prefer it over raytraced.

Could somebody post the correct velvet and SSS colours for various human groups? I know for darker skin sss ain't red and velvet isnt a light colour. I could be wrong. I have a rough understanding but I just want to compare to what others think.
