LuxRender 1.0RC2 is out: http://www.luxrender.net/forum/viewtopic.php?f=12&t=8619

I have not tested this yet so it's advisable that you install it in a separate directory until we verify that it works correctly.

Enjoy!

Is this new version motoring faster? Not sure what the stats mean but the efficiency percentage jumps up to double on the same render I am currently baking

I haven't been using RC1 because I had too many issues, so I just upgraded from the last weekly of .9.  I see a big speed increase from that, but my efficiency % is exactly the same between the two versions on the same render.

Your settings didn't look too bad, though any particular preference for the values in your specular and diffuse, or is that 'stock' for your skin maps?

One thought, though I doubt it's the perpetrator, is the gloss on the giant's fingernail. If it's at like 9800 or something way high (98% in daz is pretty typical), that could be acting like a mirror on the little lady's face, which can pop noise and fireflies like crazy.. Might be worth checking.

One other bread crumb, when you're setting skin settings, if you hold down control and click the main skin material areas (face, head, arms, legs, etc) you can set them all the same at the same time. Sometimes changing one too much from the rest will get you darker arms more than the torso, for example, and it can show very obviously when the samples get higher.

I know how to change settings on multiple items. Hard to tell since there are other scenes where this does not happen.  I was more curious to see if others have had this and how they dealt with it...

A quick lighting question...

I have 2 lights (sabers) and they are exactly the same. (duplicates actually)  In reality, I made the blades both lights, and one comes out great, but the other does not show at all (see below)  The other will give off light (i.e. I can increase the gain in Lux and it does give off red light), but for some reason it does not appear in the scene?

Anyone see anything similar to this?

(BTW: it appears fine in a normal DS or Poser render)

Check your DS scene listing and make sure they have different names. I have seen this when importing more than one of the same object at times.

Thanks for the reply!  I checked and they were named "adSithSaber" and "adSithSaber (2)".  ...but for kicks, I renamed them to leftsaber and rightsaber.  Unfortunately, it did not make a difference.

I did notice that if I keep all 3 in the same light group, the saber that you can see in the picture above becomes the "Strongest" light in the scene.  I have to seperate them up into seperate light groups, and tone down that one.  (but that may be another issue)

I changed them back to Materials, and they do look different, which again, is odd, since they are the same.  I wonder if its the angle/shape of the object that Lux has a problem with?  It is like 3 intersecting planes making a "star" pattern looking from the end.  Not sure why it works in one case, and not the other though?

Just try a little different camera-angle. I've had that mesh-lights did not show up at all even when placed through V4.. Re-loading the scene and a different camera angle, and voila, they were there again..

I think you were right about the efficiency increase. I got great efficiency with a scene I redid that used Enchanted Forest. I was using a box to help with that, but now it's good without, and with the dome. Makes it a lot more useable. And it's funny I'm sure I'm getting eye reflections more easily now. Both great news, if this is the case. I've often been frustrated by the eye reflection thing, in cases where I knew damn well I should have been getting them and wasn't. I've had no problems with the new build so far.

bobvan ( ) posted Mon, 04 June 2012 at 3:31 PM · edited Mon, 04 June 2012 at 3:35 PM

The 3 renders I have done with it show eye reflection much better. I am still having to post work the noise out of the face and it does not seem to render faster overall. I tried GPU enabled unlike RC1 this one does not crash my machine but some materials still dont transfer properly

Makes no sense to me at all...but I didn't see anything in the docs about making sense!  LOL!

I have a few of the sabres as well but haven't used them in a render. Is the light portion a 3d object or a plane object, which looks like a texture with a bunch of transparent area?

Mesh emitters in Lux only shine along the normal, they do not emit on the backface. If it's several planes intersecting, the it won't light up along certain angles.

Hi Guys,

Lux 1.0RC2 seems very stable, even the gpu 'hybrid' renderer is almost usable...great effort from the lux guys.

Paolo..I am interested in trying out the 'none' volume intergrator, but I can't find any reference to the Volume Intergrator in the Lux scene file..

Will the next iteration of Reality allow us to choose world volume's and such.??

Cheers,

p.s. have you also rethought / reconsidered doing a version for Poser, ducks head down to avoid impending stoning....Lol...

Here is a simple nude render of Natasza/Magda with the simple DS Mat by Cath.  Rendered for over 24 hour to 2.5Ks/p.  1 main meshlight and 1 fill meshlight.

I changed all the skin surfaces to matt, no other adjustments.  I should have adjusted the lip gloss down, I'll try fixint that in post.  There is something odd about her eyelashes too, which I will also play with in post.

Next I need to figure out how you do the trick with a null object and focusing the camera so I can enable DoF.  My first experiments have been failures.

I'm also going to try the new version of Lux, with the hope that I can enable my GPU and cut the render time.

Swordman01, the next update to Reality will simply support DS4.5. I have it running already but I need to finish support for storing the Reality data in the new DUF format while preserving compatibility with the old storage system.

Also, we will need to wait until DS4.5 gets out of beta before the update to Reality is released. This is one of the many reasons why I consider public betas simply a bad idea. They complicate things and bring almost no benefits.

Anyway, for Reality 3 there is the plan to integrate the new volume thingie but there are no exact details on how, what and when. This is as far as I'm going in talking about future versions :)

While we are on the subject of updates, I notice there are some issues with GeoGrafting and Reality. One is easily fixed in Reality, and that is that GG items do not import with subdivision on, so it's necessary to set subD to 1 in Modifiers for each item. The other is that each GG material imports as a part of Genesis as well as by itself. For example, with Catgirl feet, the surface Boots-Gloves_L appears with owner CatGirlFeet and with owner Genesis. They are both essential—if you null either one the mesh does not appear in Lux. I presume you are aware of these, Paolo, but will they be fixable? I realize they are not fatal, but it does add to the work needed in Reality.

Pret-a-3D ( ) posted Tue, 05 June 2012 at 9:15 AM

I'll look into geografting. I am surprised because this issue was resolved at some point so it seems that there is either regression or something has changed in the last couple of versions of Studio. Anyway, thank you for the reminder.

There was an issue with GG parts showing white which was fixed, but that was before I had started rendering any GG items. I certainly don't have that problem.

Looks like 3 intersecting planes, which if that is the case, then what J said below makes sense why a 90 degree spin addressed the issue.  Thanks for clearing it up!

That is a clear examples of "short term hacks." Stuff that works because of the way 3Delight works but that it's not really the right solution. If the sabre had actually the "blade" modelled then you would not have this problem. I don't know if the three planes are distinct, if they are and they can be set as indivisual lights, remember than Reality allows you to invert the direction of the light in the Light Editor. Simply select the light and enable "Invert direction".

Cheers.

...but can you sing?  LOL!

Anyway, I had another question:

In the case of something "not real" like a lightsaber, what methods do people use to include this in a Lux scene?  I find that using a cylinder for a blade, to get the ambient light birght enough, you lose the color, but get nice realistic reflections and such.

Since it really is a fictional object, it seems you can do it more justice in postwork, by adding it, but you can't add the ambient light, of course.

Do people render twice, and mask out the object or some other "trick of the trade"?

Braintickler ( ) posted Wed, 06 June 2012 at 9:58 AM

The Trick is "Preserve light hue" I think...

Pret-a-3D ( ) posted Wed, 06 June 2012 at 10:06 AM

Remember that the light sabers in Star Wars were actually done all in postprocessing. The actors actually played with wooden sticks that were then replaced in post by digital artists. That explains the way they glow in the movie.

You can keep the color of the light if you use the "Preserver light hue" option in the Output tab of Reality.

On a side note, I found the "Glare" effect in Lux actually can give you a really cool "saber" effect thats adjustable during render.  I replaced those blades with thin cylinder primitives in Daz Studio, and re-rendered...adding some Glare effects (tweaked) this is one sample of what it can come out like  :)
