Wait...Reality 3? And if it's like Reality for DS, it's not a rendering engine ;). It's a bridge TO the rendering engine (Luxrender). For Poser??? POSER?? That a typo too?

Unfortunately I cannot be in LA. It was all planned but two days ago my wife had to be hospitalized for a sudden and rather serious perforation of the duodenom (the "exit" part of the stomach). She is in need of continous care and I can't leave at this time. Althought the hospital is great I need to be there a few hours a day to help like only a husband can.

So, there will be the capable people of the Poser team doing all the presentation. We are coordinating together and they will have all the information that we can share at this time. If you are in LA please stop at booth #1130 and see what the future looks like.

Item of information, Smith Micro's office is ten minutes away from my home/office so we work very closely.

Cheers.

I'm curious about the new figures and also about the reality plug-in except for one thing...... the price of the plug-in. I'm not willing to pay $50-60 for a plug-in that gives me access to a free rendering engine, also knowing that a community effort was made to create a free plug-in for Poser.

The current price for reality 2 imo cannot be justified, I'm sure people are willing to pay it. I've paid $68 (when it was on sale a few months back) for Poser Pro 2012 and that sure gives me a lot more bang for my money, then a plug-in with only one functionality.

We'll see what happens, I'm sure the new figures will be interesting.

My only problem with Miki (any version) is that it's an Asian figure that only does Asian well ;). Seems a bit too narrow for me ;). For Asian I use Angela and Ang 2 and therefore don't need another Asian girl :).

Tyler on the other hand....I'm totally excited about a new man on the block :D Especially if it's Gabe's.

Path tracing is part of LuxRender. Reality supports all the rendering modes of Lux including BiDir path tracing, Path tracing, SPPM and PhotonMap. Where possible there is support for GPU acceleration. Plus Reality allows you to render your scene with both LuxRender and SLG. SLG, which stands for "SmallLux GPU", is a GPU-based renderer that is a small subset of Lux. It's incredibly fast and it's very well suited for animations. Think of it as Octane without the price tag :)

Luxrender is great. The wait for a render (given you don't use the gpu) is worth it ;). From what I've seen of Reality for DS, it looks like a full-featured, easy-to-use exporter. I wish you many sales :).

Pret-a-3D ( ) posted Sat, 04 August 2012 at 12:44 PM

Thank you Laurie. BTW, there are many ways of accelerating the render and many ways of saving time by having a much simpler workflow that uses real lights.

Case in point, take a look at this post by FSMCDesign, the Dino scene took 18 minutes from start to finish:

http://www.renderosity.com/mod/forumpro/showthread.php?thread_id=2849428&page=56

A typical Lux scene takes a fraction of the lights necessary for a biased renderer and that means less work and less tweaking. BTW, other renderers like VRay have the same time requirements and VRay is used extensively in the VFX industry. Like with everything, practice helps in finding the fastest workflows.

Cheers.

LaurieA ( ) posted Sat, 04 August 2012 at 1:18 PM

I've used Blender's Cycles. It uses GPU also and was blazing fast for me and I only have 96 cuda cores ;). I assume my render time will go up the more things I have in the scene and some complex scenes may not be suitable for GPU rendering, but for the simpler scenes it should work great.

am i understanding correctly?

Reality3 converts a pz3 to Luxrender?

would the materials from poser need further work done?

Thanks.

Anything that goes from one program to a renderer (Luxrender) will have to have it's materials converted to something Luxrender knows and understands. Reality will convert your Poser materials to Luxrender materials that are comparable. Therefore you don't even need complex materials inside Poser - they'll get converted anyway. When I use Pose2Lux I make sure all my texures are basically Poser 4 style texures. The exporter converts them to a Luxrender material.

I don't know that Paolo's program will export strand hair. Pose2Lux does. But in order to do so it has to change it to a mesh and that takes up a whole lot of resources. You're better off using transmapped hair.

Laurie

Pret-a-3D ( ) posted Sat, 04 August 2012 at 1:42 PM

One thing that I can share is that there are no similarities between Reality and other Lux exporters so it does not help to draw conclusions based on other programs. This is not a criticism of other programs. We use different approaches and it's good to understand that Reality has its own philosophy and flexibility. Developing Reality is my day job, which puts me in a very special position compared to others who write software in their spare time.

Hope this helps.

Well, IMVHO there is nothing difficult nor crippled about the exporter that Snarlygribbly wrote. It works just fine for my purposes, I can write my own shaders for it and it's free ;). Sure it's not flashy or particulary pretty and doesn't look as nice as Reality's interface for the DS exporter, but it gets the job done ;). Snarly's been very generous with his time and his scripts :).

of course. other exporters don't cost anything. only reality does. even the 3Dmax one is free... thats one difference right there..

plus it has NO similarites? you re-wrote Lux and the Lux formats specially? we can't write our own shaders .. like we can for Blender, etc? you'lve locked the formats?

ALL unbiased render engines take hours to resolve...More time if you're using emitters vs lights, but it's a long time either way. Still, time = money and you get what you pay for. Physically based render engines render a lot purtier than biased engines.

Good questions, let me clarify. File formats have nothing to do with my previous statement. For example, both Poser and Blender can read and write OBJ files. In fact the OBJ file is at the core of Poser's workflow. Nevertheless the user experience with Poser and Blender is completely different and many Poser users would rather seat on the dentist chair than use Blender to pose a figure :)

For decades artists had the ability to model using the well-known polygon but it wasn't until ZBrush arrived that we had digital sculpting. The User Experience is what makes ZBrush so powerful. Its tools, and how the problem of sculpting is approached make it possible to create the models that were not possible before. When you look at the files on disk at the end it's the same .OBJ file format used by many other apps. It's how you get there that is making the difference.

Reality is all about the User Experience and how we get the results from the scene created, in this case, with Poser to the final product in Lux. In that regard I believe that my tool stand on its own.

Hope this helps.
