Yes, my freebie-hunting tainted seed has been spread far and wide 'cross the net. Though at least 150gb are my own high-rez character textures and retextured sets of stuff I already have, so we won't count those.
Is this gonna turn into some sort of pi$$ing contest? lol showoff!

Is Gargamelle afoot? Might also be a very high blue specular color that didn't agree. I haven't delved much in cross-shader mating via Reality. Not to say it can't be done, of course!

Yeahhh, might pass on the five. Got one of my own on the way, so I'm trying to build up my horde now while I can. I am an excellent freebie hunter, too.

That's very odd. It turned out OK when I used the Bree shaders on Charlie & Neve skin (see my post above). I didn't do anything special either, funny that we got two different results.
Mighty peculiar.
Quote - > Quote - > Quote - I recently started burning off content that I no longer use or no longer like. I've only went through a smidgeon of the content I have and I've only been working on characters and hair so far. 2 Dvd's full of hair sets and 3 full of character sets and I still have like 30 gigs worth of stuff I've not even sorted through. Little over 4 grand at last count on the stuff I've burnt off. I don't know of too many ppl who are content addicts like me.
You're small-time, Just checked my DS content hdd, 116Gb so far! I'm a shop-a-holic! (my bosses wife and my o/h got me loads of that stuff though).

I got stuff from before Poser3 came out includeing my original Poser 1 install disks

it could very well be my lighting.. i've been relying heavily on ibl lately as that's the only time i can get my render speed above 30k s/s on this old beast of a computer.. i'm soooooooo waiting for the 5th of october to get here so i can start building a giant rendering beast for the wife and I.
using my "daz environment sphere as a light" system.. i can get my render speeds up to about 70k s/s and that's okay for now.
Quote - While I was thinking about skins, I decided I just had to redo my close-up skin test with one of my all-time favorite skins... Charlie & Neve from Callad(yes, our very own Callad) and moonbunnie (if you don't have it yet, it is available here on Renderosity: http://www.renderosity.com/mod/bcs/charlie-neve-for-v4-2/75271)
The first shot just goes to show the superior quality of the skin texture I think, this is straight out of the box!(no material adjustments) amazing results! This also illustrates how good a job Reality does converting materials for LuxRender.
CLICK HERE FOR FULL SIZE: FULL SIZE
This second shot is the same scene, but with the Bree ACSEL shaders applied to the Charlie & Neve skin. This is a straight copy of the shader set, no tweaking of any settings. Not sure if I like it any better than the out-of-the-box version, but it is nice.
CLICK HERE FOR FULL SIZE: FULL SIZE
I played around with tweaking the Bree shader settings, but couldn't come up with anything I thought looked any better. My skills are still in their formative years :)
I'm thinking of doing this same scene with the Dublin textures (which I bought specifically because of my current obsession with skin textures )
All comments welcome.
Oh and BTW, a huge thank you to Callad (and moonbunnie) for the awesome set that is "Charlie & Neve" Love it!
Michael
PS- If anyone can tell me how to post multiple images that you can click the image to see the full size view (without editing the HTML), please PM me and illuminate me :) Thanks!
PPS- I have a question about the artifacts appearing on the chin and jawline in these images... I tried using subdivision both with and without micro-facets, and tried moving the camera slightly and the lights, but couldn't get rid of them. It is happening with other textures too. Any ideas on how to get rid of these ugly blemishes on my renders? Kind of disheartening seeing this on Genesis.
Michael
First a 'thank you' for all the nice compliments :) (and -no- I haven't paid Michael to say all that )
I like the second image too, it's a totally different 'look' this way! I must say I like the eyes of the original setting just a tad more (maybe a combination would work?)
I just LOVE all Danae-crafted skins, these days I use them a lot and think they are worth every penny.
The artifacts just may disapear when you give the Reality light a slightly different angle, that has worked for me sometimes. Hope this helps :)

I'll have to check out those skins, I seem to be on a skin quest right now lol.
(next obsession is gonna have to be hair, I don't have many, they always seem to be pricey, so I shy away from buying those I haven't seen in a render)
Thanks for the tip about changing the angle of the light, I tried that with both lights in the scene, didn't seem to help. Maybe I just need to change the angle MORE heh.
While I have your "ear" , I don't mean to put you on the spot, but, do you think there will ever be a Genesis version of the Charlie & Neve figures?
There's tons of freebies out there, ya' just need to look a little. My go-to hunting grounds is of course, sharecg. The freebie area here on Rendo has some goodies too, but you need to watch those descriptions. A lot of them tend to be texture sets or fixes to an existing product. I have found some of good links from there though.
Just found a bunch of hair and other useful bits here yesterday while looking for an A4 shirt:http://www.evilinnocence.com/free-stuff/clothing.html?limit=all
Anyway, most of the major content sites have a freebie section, and will occasionally offer them 'exclusively' for email subscribers.
In the last year, I'd say at least half of my 'junk' was found for free (!!)
Skin textures, I used to be a big Sarsa enthusiast (over @Daz), though Mirhelle here on Rendo has lots and lots of good ones too, as well as Reciecup. Now that I've made a few myself, I tend create one if I can't find just what I'm looking for, and I can edit the daylights out of 'em without having to worry about copyright issues or whatnot.
Happy Hunting!

lol 'Dublin' IS a Danae-skin :) So is Rio, Paris & Lyon :)
As to your question: No, I don't think I will create anything to sell anymore. Besides, when Gen-X will work for 4.5 you can 'easily' load the morphs onto Genesis, the skin works already on Genesis ;)
Now that we have skins sorted, maybe we could have a definitive list of hairs that renders well in Lux. And the settings for each. As Callad is the expert, maybe she would like to list her favourite hairs (and maybe settings)?
I decided to take a break from my Skin rendering and play with light(shadow) a bit...

This is Tori (Bree skin) rendered to 1 Kspp, baked about 7 hours.
Hope you like!

oh wow.. that list would be enormous. it would be more easily narrowed down into categories as there are some that look like helmet-head no matter what the render engine is and there are so many hair "styles" that just look like a dozen others. My key is the designer of the hair. I'll pick up just about anything made by outoftouch/bice and swam/goldtassel as like 98% of their content is hair and seem to REALLY know what they are doing.
callad.. if you'll remember back.. i was having some issue with the charlie & neve characters transferring via GenX. Since I went over to 4.5 I knew I was going to be without GenX for a while; so, I transferred over all 500 or so ++ morphs as well as the elite morphs and a few others that are used frequently by character creators. To make a long story even longer, I got to messing around last night while I was letting a render bake and decided to hand-transfer over charlie and neve. On GenX, if you don't specify, the dial maxes are -1 to +1. Charlie and Neve both use settings higher than that on several morphs. This led me to think that maybe the reason why charlie and neve's chests were so deformed after the GenX transfer because I hadn't turned off limits. My hand-dialed charlie looked pretty darned nice imho. I'll post a quickie 3delight render of how she turned out. Haven't gotten around to hand dialing Neve into Genesis yet as it takes me about an hour to do each one depending on how many morphs are used.
Quote - medmon.. even though I don't do it myself very well.. i'm a big fan of subdued lighting so that render is pretty nice imho. maybe some sort of texture or color on the floor to let the viewer know that she and the candles aren't hovering in space.
Thanks, Sharky.
I thought about putting in a floor, but it was 3 hours into rendering when I decided it needed "something more" and I didn't want to lose the time invested already :)
I also thought about a blanket or sheet crumpled up at her feet/side, but had no idea how to go about that (had vague recollections of a dynamic sheet freebie somewhere...)
Also considered a window behind her with moonlight streaming in for a backlight...who knows, maybe I will revisit this. I'd also like to find some more/better candles for the scene.
Anyway, thanks again for commenting.
As far as character textures go; I'd wholeheartedly agree on Danae. My own personal favorite is Rebelmommy; but, Mihrelle looks like he/she will quickly pass RM up. I just got Mihrelle's new-ish Elena character/texture and it renders about as well as anything I've seen so far. Could possibly pass up Dublin as my all-time favorite character/texture. For older stuff I love syltermermaid although some of her characters look a tad too young to be appearing in any of MY renders. For african/american characters, Reciecup does make some nice skins.. I just think his/her character dial-ups are horrid. About the only place I go off-rendo for characters is illusions designs as every since character I've gotten from them(74 at last count) is utterly fantastic.

What about just a plane with a cloth texture applied.. subdivided down to like 5 levels, and then a d-form? I'm not good at spline editing; but, I saw a spline editing tute that made a beautiful water-drop effect on a flat water surface. something like that to crumple the plane up.. do that will several d-forms and you have a crumpled sheet.
Medmon.. this is my try at replicating the effect you were getting with the close-ups you were doing yesterday. It's my own hand-dialed character with Callad's charlie/neve texture applied. Gloria Short Hair morphed up some to try to get a wind-blown look. The background is an hdri image I found and applied to the daz environment sphere and then turned into a light in Reality. Used no shaders and did not one thing with the materials other than make unseen materials matte rather than glossy. Let it bake about 1200 passes. I actually used a film effect on this.. used the Kokak Portra 160NC as this is what my pro photog cousin said she uses for portrait work.
Seeing it full-sized is a must so clickie clickie on the pic to see the giant version.

Very nice, Sharky. I sure do like that Charlie & Neve skin ( I may have mentioned this before )
I need to look into using the DAZ Environment Sphere (not really even sure what that is to be honest) I've just been using the Multiplane Cyclorama as a backdrop in most of my scenes.
Medmon.. your mileage may vary.. but using that environment sphere(base studio install in the props group of smart content) as a light has tripled to quadrupled my render speeds. It seems to really do the trick if you're just using ibl anyway. When I use mesh lights the max speed I can get out of this 4yr old puter is about 30k s/s; so, I use any trick I can to squeeze more speed until I build a new box in october.
Did this one several days ago, but for you anime fans, I got such a great response that I ended up doing the entire cast (minus Alice and Zero) one at a time of High School of the Dead. I have the full cast in one shot surprisingly cookin' now, though Studio became almost unresponsive by the time I squeezed 6 plus a zombie into the shot.
All the base characters I've done thus far are over on dA, though this was the first and most popular thus far.

OT, saw this and wanted to see what others here thought. I rarely use backgrounds as I want a full 3D environment, but saw a new set of 2D images that are being marketed for use as image backgrounds from a vendor called Melkor. I checked out their store and that is pretty much all they market, 2d backgrounds. Now the issue I have with it, they are mostly done using existing 3D sets from people like Stonemason and such which seems wrong IMO.
If I was to create a 3D city landscape for sale, the last thing I would want/allow is someone to sell images done using it for background purposes as it would take away from what my product is mainly used for, background. Basically that person would be making profit off of me in using their product to compete with mine, kinda like rendering high res images of an existing character and using those renders to make a new character to sell.

at best i would consider it parasitic.. but if i passed rendo's copyright cops i guess it's allowable.

I very much agree with your thoughts on this, but unfortunately it's not the first I've heard of it. On the legality side, it isn't much different than if you were to make prints with your own characters and say a stonemason set is in the background. It's still covered under the commerical use aspect.
Personally, I much prefer a 3D set as well, and to have control over the lighting of said set and its environment. With a background, you're stuck (aside from photo filters in post) with however it was rendered by the marketer, so for as far as people who just want a quick background, most serious folks won't have much interest. Again in my opinion, it's really marketed to people who want the quick and easy preset style of image.
My 2 pennies. Thanks for the comment by the way!
On the TOS, they frown on images where harm is currently being caused to another 'person' or entity, but if the event has passed, apparently that's kosher. Not sure where that one of Brad's would fall into, but I liked it so I'm guilty too.

I tend to disagree. Usage is what is defined by the original copyright holder and if I made an image that had the set in the background, it wouldn't be marketed as a background to replace the original existing 3D scene. If they were my sets, rendo would know about it and I would do everything in my power to have the 2D products pulled. This marketplace is too small and niche to allow any kind of plagiarism like this IMO
Thanks for the TOS info, helps me in posting.
