Subject: Reality Render thread. A new beginning.

Quote - Im using 2.5 and did not get any errors on the supposive 0.8 version O_o. only when I had GPU selected.

There are several features of Reality 2 that are not working if you use Lux 0.8. The fact that you didn't see any issue so far means simply that you didn't hit those features yet or that the problem was not immediately noticeable but you will get into problem if you use Lux 0.8 with Reality 2.

Hope this helps.

Nice render, Bob. However, in all your renders I am having trouble reading the chat bubbles even when viewing the image at full size. I understand wanting the text to be as un-intrusive as possible, but maybe you can post the images in a little larger size? or blow up the text a teense? I feel I am missing an important element in your renders 😄

Just a thought. Keep up the great work

Thats what I get for working on a 27" monitor since they look clear to me LOL

If you'd rather not change the size of the text, or post bigger images, you can just buy me a 27" (or larger) monitor instead. Yeah. That works for me 😄

Boyyyyyyyyy.. if you have two people in one household who render.. make sure you don't share the same runtime(ours is on server built for the whole house).  Short but ugly story.  Brother got a character/texture.  Saw it when I updated my studio content and used it in a render.  Gave the artist appropriate vendor credit.  He comes and visits my render.... looks at his purchases and doesn't see my artist name.  Sends me a nastygram about it.  I replied back.  He replies that it's against rendo policy to do what we're doing(by letter of the EULA it is...only the law of douche-baggery makes it enforceable in cases like this) and would prefer that we buy separate copies for each person using it.  I say I'll check with admin about it and do so.  They say "that's a no-no.. every buys a copy) and i say "nice.. even in the same house.. possibly even on same computer."  they say "yep" I say.. "nice.. lost yourself a customer there.. even if you sell the recipe to turn lead into gold."  they say "have a nice day"

Now I have a fun commission with a request to recreate alot of known ppl with facegen.

With the right pic one can make ppl look close as in this pic with Kim Kardashian

If it were not having the need to use genesis with face gen I would back to using DS3 Im tired of all the crap one has to put up with using 4...

That kinda sucks, but I think I can see the point they are trying to make. What you buy isn't really the product, rather license to use said product in your work. The license is like a software license in the sense that it is meant for a single user and is non-transferrable(usually). SO even though you have a single physical copy of the product, only a person who has purchased the product is licensed to use it.

I know, kinda sucks, but if you are a content creator, it's good that someone is looking out for you with such policies I guess.

Sorry for your pain Sharky.

I must say it sounds like they were sort of apathetic about losing your business, which kinda tells me they didn't deserve it to begin with maybe.

you sure its not the export process.. if I export the figure as an OBJ and reimport into Daz then send to reality all is fine as the OBJ is exported with everything welded..

As an artist, Bob, with what I just went through; I'd watch yourself.  Take pains not to make your facegens TOO realistic.  Singers, actors and comedians own the repro rights to their likenesses, also.  Even body parts... john holmes did.. and ron jeremy & peter north both currently have licensing agreements in force on the size and shape of their johnsons.  A buddy of mine who plays guitar loves eddie van halen.. likes him so much he painted a '72 strat to look just like EVH's red & white striped "frankenstein."  he did a really stellar job on it.. took a pic and sent it in a fan letter to EVH.  He got a letter back asking him to "repaint that thing because I don't want people to think I play a strat."

your quality won't change going to version 1.0RC4, just gain some speed and some fixes and a couple new options I think. Should be ok finishing with .8

Maybe as an exercise, run it again with 1.0 to compare your speed?

its slower in 1.0

Are you SURE it's slower? ;) Don't just compare the sampling rate, the way Lux samples was changed quite a bit in 1.0. If you have a lot lights, it will be slower, but much more efficient.

With the geografted DAZ female genitalia I always have to replace a low-rez mesh named something like 'Genesis Female Genitalia_SkinHip_63.ply' with the high-rez 'Genesis_SkinHip_63.ply' also found in Lux's 'Resourses/objects' folder, or I get a visible seam in the render.

So you could try to make a copy of the high-rez mesh, and rename it with the name of the low-rez one if you find such a double of your geografted item in your objects folder, and see what happens. MeshLab is helpful for a quick check of what's what.

Of course it is very odd that two versions of the same bodypart-geometry are used by Reality/Lux, but it's especially annoying that you have to manually replace the ugly low-rez one each and every time you set up a render containing geografted items.

Don't know if it's a DAZ 'feature' or a Reality/Lux bug though.

Cheers!

The first version of Reality that supported geografting worked well. Then something must have changed in Studio that caused the current behavoir. I want to fix it but I might not be able to get to that before Reality 3. At the latest it will be done with version 3, if I can find the problem sooner I will issue an update.

Cheers.

I think I will stick to my meathod of exporting the object and re importing it into D|S... That way if I mess up lighting or something I dont have to keep replacing the .ply

I am currently working on Reality 3 fourteen hours a day, non stop, including holidays and werekends. There is just so much time in  a day :) Reality 3 is a completely new architecture with tons of new features which I'm sure will delight everybody.

Reality 3 for Poser is scheduled for November, Reality 3 for Studio 4 is scheduled a couple of months later, which would bring it to January, no March. Work on Reality 2 is completed, except for urgent bug fixes like the ones about the scene merge, which are being tested as we speak. I'm just trying to optimize the time available so that we get the best product to market in the shortest time possible.

All the best.

Paolo, strangely enough, I'm actually getting fewer than I did with RC2 and 3. RC3 created a really strange 'jaggy'/non-anti-alias look on the limbs of my characters if they were not prominently set as the focus in a scene, so for awhile I rolled back to RC2. RC4 has been great in that department, except that it likes to crash if there's a texture in the cornea slot or alpha channel that I may have missed when doing larger scenes.

Edit: Sorry, I misread that. Answer still holds for the most part.

Sbt, the "inconsistent shading normals" was a message that appeared in the log window often and did absolutely no good. It did create a bit of concern in new users and caused hours and hours of my time wasted repeating messages of reassurance that there was nothing wrong with the scene. So I removed the damn thing from Lux :)

It's actually still there but it's been relegated to the debug messages; you need to pass the magic switch on the command line to see that sort of thing :)

Ahhh, peace. :)

Content Advisory! This message contains nudity

To funny. I opened an old DS scene and was playing around with it trying to find a creative spark and after serveral skin changes, some posing and some dail spinning came up with this render idea. My GF walked by the PC and saw the render baking and said "WTF! did you create a 3d version of ______ (ex GF) ?" I was like what? She then pulled down a picture I had of a bunch of us at my best friends wedding which has me and the ex in it. The face is pretty close as well as hair color/thickness (hers was curly and longer) and the freckles. it was not intentional by any means, but the GF was a bit miffed, LOL.

Hmmm, wonder what she is up to.......LOL.

Paolo's support of his product is exemplary. Far, Far above the norm in my experience.

I don't think he meant that he won't support 2.x any longer, just that new features will only be added in the 3.x branch now.

He specifically stated he will still do bug fixes (one of which is in the works as I type, apparently)

Anyway, I'm not worried about support as long as Paolo is livin and breathin 😄

Your opinion voices a valid concern, Bob.  With the cost of software (everything?) going up like it is, I always worry about future support of a product before I invest hard earned cash in it.

That being said, I think Reality, for me, has been a good investment thusfar. I may not do spectacular things with it, but I have fun just dinking around 😄

Have you posted your favorite render yet?

Let me shed a bit of light in this.

One thing is support and one thing is development. Support should not be a concern for anybody, I always supported customers no matter what version they use. In fact I still answer questions today from customers using Reality 1.

Development is another story. The Reality 2 codebase is closed. It make no sense to me to develop that codebase because Reality 3 is the future. All features of Reality 2 are being migrated to Reality 3 and many things are getting expanded.

I think that it is important that I explain that 80% of Reality 3 is common among all the host applications (Poser, Studio, ...) The interface and base material handling are exactly the same regardless what application you are using.  I mean this at the binary level. The Reality 3 User Interface is a separate executable, not a plugin. That exexutale will be exactly the same between host applications.

This is a design that frees Reality from being tied to a specific host application and allows me to port it to virtually any platform. Reality for Blender anybody? Reality for modo? Why not? :)

That is the future and that is where I'm pouring all my energy. For you there is no issue. You will get the option to upgrade to the new Reality 3 at a very low price, similar to what is happening today, and the old data will migrate to the new version of Reality. Your investment in Reality 2 is protected and safe.

Hope this helps

I have moved on from my obsession with skin.  I've been trying out a few hair products, just toying around to see what works and what doesn't.  This is the first render I felt was worth sharing.

Tori with "Asteria" Hair

This is Tori with Asteria hair from Mairy & 3Dream. (available here at Renderosity)

I like the way the hair turned out. I lowered the glossiness strength to 0, because I was getting far too many red sparklies in the hair. I also changed bump map settings to -.1 and .1 (from .001s)

This one is at 1000 spp and baked for just under an hour! (I finally put my kids' gaming computers to use! Network rendering works great so far with LuxRender 1.0rc4)

What do you think of the hair?

Nice Render

Thanks for that Paolo.  Again I consider this "place" one we can have mature discussion without turning into an EA sports like kiddie flaming stupidities. I have someone who makes the same concept art that I do and he uses Modo he claims most of his renders take less then 5 minutes. They are not Lux quality but still pretty decent..
